I could never be bothered watching all the Halloween and Chainsaw sequels given how messy the whole thing is. Ive seen the first four Halloween movies. Ive also seen Resurrection because it was on tv and i was too lazy to change the channel. I absolutely hated the remake stopped there avoiding the new trilogy. Ive seen the first 3 Chainsaw movies and the remake which i thought was meh (i hated how horror movies looked around that time). Am i actually missing anything?

Insufferable characters, a boring Leatherface who acts nothing like he did in the old movies, overly tryhard (DUDE she pulls a gun out of her pussy and shoots herself LMAO!), very ugly cinematography, etc
It misses everything great about the original, which is a problem most remakes have. The 90s Night of the Living Dead and the 80s The Blob are examples of remakes done right

Tonight's film: Tom Savini's Night of the Living Dead.
I'm bothered that they didn't address my biggest problem with the original. If you're in a two story house, why not block off the stairs and hold out on the second floor after barricading the windows?
Also, this movie never establishes the zombies' fear of fire before Ben starts waving around a torch on the way to the gas pump.

I'm not as into horror as you guys, but after watching a few films I'm starting to think that the 80s might have been the best time period for American horror.

Have you noticed any significant difference in how certain countries and cultures portray horror in their films? For example, what an American film empathizes that a German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, etc. film wouldn't, and vice versa? Or would you claim that horror is pretty universal?
>>
>>204889514
It did. You're sperging out because you lack counterarguments and are not looking at the big picture.
Torture porn for instance was simply a less childish and more impersonal approach to the same level of gore and violence of Friday 13th and other slashers which had at that point become formulaic.
August Underground is more tonally linked to the 80s Guinea Pig series and 1993's Schramm.
And there were several great 2000s horror movies that have nothing whatsoever to do with torture porn.
>>
>>204889591
Well that's not to mention the solid direction, editing, lighting, composition, kino performance by Englund, and an appropriate dose of 2000s comedy horror type of shenanigans. Not only is it better than the worst of both franchises, in my view it belongs in the upper tier of both franchises. Because let's be honest, neither of them are particularly consistent in their quality. But I can see that I'm talking to a brick wall so I could just as soon shit in my hand and clap, thereby accomplishing just as much as I would by trying to communicate with you.
>>
>>204889649
Well outside the US they sure empathise less about killing live animals for a scene
>>
>>204889649
the underlying themes are almost always the same
it's in the presentation of them that they differ
like guro and body horror are the same it's just that guro tends to have sense of comedy and siliness about it that sets the two apart as western body horror is more serious about it
>>
>>204889644
I disagree.
>>
>>204889649
I've noticed that India likes to shove gay ass song and dance routines into every fucking movie they make

>>
>>204889707
Bloody bastard fuck!
>>
>>204889707

Trying to find a horror DVD I rented from Blockbuster in Australia in the early 2000s. It was about a group of people with shotguns in black trench coats that had a business where they got to the souls of the recently dead before the grim reaper and sold them. It started with them running through an abandoned factory and finding a dead guy, then some people in a cage in a forest with the worst CGI reaper you can imagine floating around. I turned it off after that.
>>
>>204889738
I'm exaggerating it's not in EVERY Indian film but it was notably in the recent V/H/S/ movie and it's a REALLY common thing I don't care for in Indian cinema

I am just morally opposed to the idea of killing someone or something for entertainment purposes. It's not as if they were recording a documentary and wanted to show us how a tribe kills and feeds from its prey, it was done purely out of shock value.
>>
>>204889799
She was in the second Escape Room movie, though I think more in the alternate ending version.
Weird case where they shot two considerably different endings to a movie but neither are really a money maker compared to the other.
>>
>>204889649
The key difference is that the anti-intellectual approach to horror in the US was more pronounced, as in: horror was expected to be mainstream and simple, and exceptions-that is, movies with a more complex thematic or visual approach- were usually directed by foreigners (Val Lewton, Tourneur, Robert Wise, Jack Clayton, Polanski and, in The Shining's case, by an American who'd left the country many years prior).
This is seen to this day in the way some of the horror audience resists/rejects the elevated horror movies which are a way to reconnect with finer production values and complex (sometimes self-consciously so) themes and subtexts.
>>
>>204889799

>>
I like grimy hateful early 2000s horror. See No Evil, Hills have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw remake, House of Wax etc..
>>
>>204889729
i've always seen body horror as the destruction of the physical self either through transformation/transfiguration or just a straight up disintegration
and, to me, that as similar to guro, as the end product of body horror is to create something grotesque, guro itself comes from the japanese pronunciation of "grotesque"
destruction is part of it but it's not the entirety of it
>>

I like having both, to be honest. Sometimes the themes can get heavy handed and repetitive, hence all the joking about horror movies that deal with "repressed trauma". Making a horror movie that is just something of a fun ride can be as difficult as a "deeper" look into horror, even tho both require great skill and creativity. I just saw the Blob (1988) and was blown away by what a horrifying fun movie that was, but it didn't get under my skin as something like Rosemary's Baby or Invasion of the Body Snatchers did, for example.
>>
>>204889908
Your take is more nuanced than mine, that's for sure. I just tend to associate guro with how cruel and grotesque a death scene can get, whereas with body horror I imagine someone degenerating into something grotesque that's more akin to a disease rather than an attack by a third party, or a complete change in what they are and how they feel about themselves through deformation.

It's a great concept. In most horrors there's still an authority to fall to. The cops arrive at the end to kill the slasher. The army has a base to defend against the zombies.
But in Body Snatchers, the authority is constantly in doubt, corrupted.

Also how did the alien get on board the escape shuttle/why did he get on board? He’s not intelligent enough to understand self destruct warnings and there’s no way he was fast enough to just slip in there after her without her noticing. Why did the shuttle have an airlock anyway? It was the size of a small van.

First of all a correction: Wise was American despite living/filming abroad (The Haunting was a British production).
As for the duality between more to the point horror movies (slasher, splatter, creatures, dolls etc) and the recent elevated horror trend/franchises such as Conjuring-Insidious/older movies with a bigger emphasis on emotional layers etc I fully agree, there's no need to pick sides.
70s/80s American horror movies that became mainstream have a certain type of fan who's protective of them to the exclusion of anything that was released later but there's no need to because these are cherished, deservedly acclaimed movies and even if the later ones are arguably not on the same average level many of them are very interesting and enjoyable in their own ways.

A ripoff of the Insidious plot, which is a better film.

I thought it was suggesting that people don't love each other as they really are, only the image they have of how they want the other person to be. Rather than work through their marital differences, they both ditch each other as soon as a "perfect" version of their spouse comes along who acts exactly they way they want. And if you're the child of parents like this, good fucking luck to you, because they care so little abour you that once they have the moment they obtain thing that gets them off taking up their attention, they will discard you like an old sheet soaked with doppelgänger cum. Being the child of narcissists is literally apocalyptic and worse tha
nuclear war.
. I thought it was nice that the movie focuses on the kid's emotions and how all this insanity affects him, too.

This will always be one of my favourite movies ever, and take me back to that time in my life where my interest in film first began to mature.
