I really enjoyed seeing Opera recently and been meaning to ask: how come the ending in the Alps feels like a reshoot on only half the budget? For a director with plenty of batshit endings he should’ve left out that last chase scene.

I watched 3 horror movies this morning:

>Don't Sleep In The Woods Tonight
It's a Polish slasher film and surprisingly good. Main girl is cute, other girl shows tits during a sex scene, nerd character makes horror references. Always good to have slashers outside of North America.
>Don't Sleep In The Woods Tonight 2
They lost the fucking plot on this one. All they had to do was copy the first, but instead they go full fucking retard. It's still watchable, but vastly worse. Other than the weird sex scene with weird deformed/creature tits, it's a pretty terrible sequel.
>Meth Gator
Oh yeah, I watched this piece of shit. The CGI is so fucking bad, it's Mainland China tier. The acting is better than Crackcoon, so there's that. Fuck this movie, and I'm really regretting watching all these drug + creature horror movies. My life is out of control.

Opera is top 5 Argento regardless of the tacked-on ending, better than Deep Red and Phenomena imo. It was disappointing they didn’t cut to credits after Betty escapes the fire but everything prior is kino. It’s no Suspiria or Tenebre but I can see why some anons prefer it.

>>205500848
That ending monologue where she’s losing her mind laying in the grass was just too corny for me. I like how she tricked the killer by “pretending” she was crazy like her mom though.

Eh it depends on the movie. Full Moon had an October sale so this Puppet Master set was $72. I don't like buying things pre-owned and touching stuff that people put their doodoo chocolate grease fingers on, so I do typically pay full price for something I really want or wait for a sale and buy a bunch of stuff. Good price for a standard studio Blu is $10-20 range, but I'll pay more for a nice boutique release. I got the Bram Stoker's Dracula 4K for $20, which isn't a terrible price for a 4K disc.
>>
>>205510150
I would be wary of buying box sets like this. They're already starting to release Puppet Master movies in 4K individually. Soon enough there'll be a 4K set.

Jason Blum is a political retard but Blumhouse does well overall and his production system (limited budget, total directorial freedom) has resulted in several good movies. The scattershot approach has worked several times in terms of quality and/or commercial success.
Its major mistake was the subpar DDG's Halloween trilogy but most of all his retarded Exorcist Believer which led him to be ousted from future franchise projects and replaced by Mike Flanagan (whom I also dislike)

It used to be 1 million, then 3 million, then 5 million, then 10 million. Now they're between 15-30 million. Not so low budget anymore.

Flanagan is writing & directing, Blum is producing.

Critic assessment tends to be overly harsh for horror but there have been exceptions. Commercially, Blumhouse is doing great: Halloween trilogy made a ton of money and despite utter derision so did the Exorcist movie. Even very discreetly received movies do very well (Imaginary made 4x its budget).
Considering their 2024 releases 3 out of 4 were considerable commercial hits and last year they simply made M3gan and FNAF, both phenomenally lucrative and franchise starters.
>It used to be 1 million, then 3 million, then 5 million, then 10 million. Now they're between 15-30 million. Not so low budget anymore.
If you get 4,5,6X your investment in box office alone that's an excellent return/business model.
>Flanagan is writing & directing, Blum is producing.
Yes, that's exactly what I said: Flanagan's replacing DDG to jumpstart from scratch and retcon the franchise for Blumhouse/Universal

>Considering their 2024 releases 3 out of 4 were considerable commercial hits

You just casually ignored marketing budgets and the fact that theaters take 50% of the gross while Blumhouse shares the rest with the distributor (usually Universal these days). The minimum marketing spend is 30 million but Blumhouse productions usually get 50-65 million in ad spend.

So it's not really as simple as "Oh wow, Imaginary's PRODUCTION budget was 10-13 million and the total gross was just shy of 44 million, that's a considerable commercial hit!" There's a reason why you'll never see Imaginary 2.

Blumhouse was built on the foundation of sub-5 million films making +100 million, like Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Insidious, The Purge, Get Out. Not +10 million films making 40 million or going straight to streaming.

>You just casually ignored marketing budgets
Even if they were enormous-- which is obviously not the case for Imaginary kek-- if a movie makes at least 3x its budget it's comfortably in the profit zone.
By your rationale attempt practically no movie would make money. Blumhouse's business model works very very well and that's why it keeps going. It's probably a template for future Hollywood productions: genre movies with small-medium budgets and not inherently attached to pg-13 constraints.
>Blumhouse was built on the foundation of sub-5 million films making +100 million, like Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Insidious, The Purge, Get Out. Not +10 million films making 40 million or going straight to streaming.
10 million movies making 40 mil is, as I said, excellent even before factoring in streaming gains which are substantial for horror. BH's one straight to streaming project this year was House of Spoils-- bought by Amazon by a certainly hefty sum.
Blumhouse expanded. It's doing fine and has a well-deserved reputation of consistent cost benefit commercial success.

>Insidious Red Door was an enormous commercial hit
That wasn't my point. The point was that Imaginary WASN'T a "considerable commercial hit".

>producers don't invest 3x the budget in marketing costs
Yeah, producers don't invest anything into marketing, the distributor does. And the minimum for a wide release film (read: more than 1,500 screens) is 30 million, whether the production budget was 150 million, 15 million, 1.5 million, 150k or 15k.

>>205516034
>it's comfortably in the profit zone
I didn't say Imaginary lost money. I said that Blumhouse's grosses have dipped. And since, unlike 99% of other producers, they don't take any money upfront and only make money when their films make money, comfortably getting past break even is not a huge success.

>Blumhouse expanded
If you're talking about merging with Wan's Atomic Monster, they also have done nothing but theatrical flops or straight-to-streaming films outside of The Conjuring franchise. It's consolidation to survive.

>The point was that Imaginary WASN'T a "considerable commercial hit".
You are very wrong and I have no idea how you could possibly think that. The fact that Insidious Red Door was a major hit doesn't make Imaginary any less successful, it was a modest movie released in an unpretentious, lowkey date that turned in an excellent profit.
>Yeah, producers don't invest anything into marketing, the distributor does.
Wrong if we're talking about Blumhouse among other companies. Whoever distributes it is tied to BH's business model and don't throw money away.
>And the minimum for a wide release film (read: more than 1,500 screens) is 30 million,
Wrong. Armchair/reddit "knowledge" which are not ready to substantiate except for my uncle works at Nintendo hearsay.
> I said that Blumhouse's grosses have dipped.
You're cherrypicking and establishing a false dichotomy by implied that if not every BH movie is Insidious/Paranormal Activity level in terms of box office it's a failure but that's not a commercially savvy way to look at business. Every project has its own projection and most of them make BH money, with some being staggering unexpected successes- more recently FNAF which cost BH zero dollars as it had already been fully paid for by Peacock.
>If you're talking about merging with Wan's Atomic Monste
No, I'm talking M3gan, FNAF, Speak No Evil remake (made over 5x its budget at theaters etc).
You simply sound rancorous for some reason and trying to make it seem as if BH isn't a wildy successful company. Read this, though it's from 2022 it provides an objective overview:

Just watched Oddity, anons. Really enjoyed it, the way the movie portrays the supernatural and the mystical aspects of things is very eerie. Thought there was a good balance between jumpscares and the long drawn out story line. Though the "subversion of expectations" might seem annoying at first, once you realize that they are not being subverted but actually kind of diverted from the momentary cliches you would expect, it gets way better.

What did you anons think of it?

I liked it very much and agree with your opinion: it succeeds because its elements are well balanced. It also refrains from bombast and emphasizes suspension as a narrative tool which brings the spectator closer to the story.
