>>214538841Asian "metaphysics" is infecting the Western mind. Time is teleological, it is not meaningless, endless duration. Everything we do in life matters. His films are without telos. This Buddhist baloney is the diabolical inversion of everything that is Good, True and Beautiful. Any modern man that had his disordered mind restored by being born anew in Christ Jesus cannot watch this modern farthouse garbage for it is poison to the soul.
>>214540352Classical narrative films can get stale sometimes. There's nothing wrong with dabbling with modernist farthouse iterations. Alinear storytelling, contemplative cinema, etc. Chillax. Calm ye tits; etc.
>>214540352Buddhism says time is neither meaningless or meaningful that is a construction of our own minds. The baloney is also neither good nor bad. Like all things it is empty of essence and your reaction to it says more about you than the thing in itself, which Buddhism would say that it too is empty of any essential quality.
>>214540449>contemplative cinemaWhat's that even supposed to mean, really? I'm seriously asking. Simply pointing the camera at something for a long time does not make something "contemplative."
I'm currently at 40% of all the films I want to watch to have seen something from every country around the world. It's been a while since I've posted an update, and I've only watched like 10 or so films since my last update, but there are really only three I want to post about today. The first is a film from the island nation of Vanuatu titled Tanna. It's essentially just a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, but set in the aforementioned island of Vanuatu and apparently somewhat inspired by real events that took place between the tribes back in the 80's. I went in expecting nothing special, because pretty much everything I've seen from a small island nation so far has been mediocre at best, but some of the cinematography here is fantastic, and while the story was pretty simple and straightforward, it had me interested enough to get invested in where it was going. While I obviously didn't understand the language, the acting seemed to be pretty good as well, which is surprising considering no one involved was an actual actor. Anyway, would recommend. 7/10
>>214540963The second film I want to recommend is a film from Oman called The Falconer. Again this one was supposedly inspired by real events about two friends who stole animals from a zoo they worked at in order to sell them off to pay for one of the main character's sister's divorce, the main moneymaker being the titular falcon. While there is a story throughout, this one is much more of a slow-paced hangout film. Again there is some beautiful cinematography on display here and that coupled with the chill hangout vibes of the film almost makes me want to visit Oman, which is something I never thought I would say. Overall, I didn't like it quite as much as Tanna because I could really notice a lot of the stilted acting, as a majority of the film was in English, but still I would recommend it. 7/10
>>214540762>construction of our own mindsYou are thinking like a tranny. This is not Western classical metaphysics. Reality is real, it leads and out of it arise universals. We have the laws of logic. Time has a beginning and an end. Asia would still be living in their wooden mud huts without our logic and science, which were all made possible because we know the universe was created by an intelligent creator who imprinted his design in nature. This we call Empiricism. Come on home. If you want to see Asian metaphysics in action, spend a week in India. I dare you. Total chaos and disorder. Oh, it smells like poop. This is the power of Buddhism
>>214540979The last film I want to post about today is also my favorite of the bunch. It's a film from Samoa titled The Orator. Immediately from the get-go, I was hesitant about this film because it seemed like it was going to be preachy festival-bait, seeing as it's about a midget from Samoa, but the film quickly won me over. You could replace the midget with a cowardly, weak man and nothing about the film would really change. It's not so much about him being a midget, but him being a coward who is afraid to fight to save his land and his family. While the other two were fairly slow films, this one has very little dialogue at all until the final speeches at the end, and that with again more gorgeous cinematography made for a very engaging watch for me. I could see some people being bored by it, but I really liked it, and felt it had a very satisfying end. 8/10

>>214541115All three of them are on Kanopy if you have access to that. If not, I'm imagining they shouldn't be TOO hard to find download links for. If you find midgets inherently funny, then there are definitely a few scenes in The Orator that will make you laugh, even if unintentional

I typically hear "real" expressed in terms of "mind-independent existence" (or something similar but less-committal metaphysically so as to allow for certain realist forms of idealism) with a definition of reality deriving from that (something to the effect of "that which exists independently of what you or I or anyone else happens to think about it").

>>214543754I mean, John Wayne was a product of his times, even if he wasn't the most sensible man of them all. I don't even think these interviews are the most outrageous things I've ever read, and that's telling on how far we've got in terms of political extremism (both left and right wing, though mostly right wing). If Wayne was alive today, he'd probably be considered either a moderate or a full blown leftist by the Nick Fuenteses of the world lolLastly, his point about Mr. Spyro still rings true in the present, but I think it's getting to the point where what the common man thinks about x or y politician is irrelevant. I don't accept opinions from people who have no criteria with which to discuss their topics of choice, be them cinema or politics. We have to bring back minimum criteria: a doctor's opinion on politics is worth the same as a politician's opinion on medicine (looking at Mr. Shapiro right now). The only thing I can say is that the lack of empathy that has become widespread in society could only come from people who have never known struggle and true desperation. If you've been at the bottom, you know that all that isolationist bullshit in regards to races and economics is just that: bullshit. Humanity always shines through in the end; intelligence always shines through in the end.Orchid is a great band, but for me it's a Hulud angle based on how I feel in this moment and seeing what's going on in the world right now: Hollow words will burn and hollow men will burn.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV6WnX5GfVg&list=RDBV6WnX5GfVg&start_radio=1

>part of my hesitation in approaching the film came from its premise--Japanese schoolgirls forming a rock band--and the broader cultural discourse surrounding such imagery. This iconography does not appear in a vacuum; it has long been a locus of fascination, both within Japanese culture and abroad, and even among other (East) Asian cultures, where it circulates in mainstream and subcultural registers alike. That fascination has often, in certain contexts, been cultivated into fetishistic interest--literal or figurative--and entangled with Orientalist attitudes that racialize and eroticize the figure of the Japanese (or East Asian) schoolgirl. To acknowledge this is not to indict or shame viewers for liking the film. The fascination with the Other inevitably draws upon subconscious dispositions shaped by larger histories of racism, exoticism, and fetishization, and the cultivation of these attitudes within image culture means that even viewers who resist or disclaim them may nonetheless find traces of such structures informing their engagements. The point of naming this is not to moralize individual taste--fetishization and racial dehumanization are more structural phenomena than personal failings--but to recognize how they shape the reception of images, how they animate patterns of enthusiasm and acclaim. Of course, this does not excuse the maintenance or reinforcement of such attitudes; particular failures demand accountability.wtf is his problem?
