I've got a new theory about why literally every major western IP/brand has been turned into hot garbage. I'm starting to wonder if Jeff didn't pull the strings and gaslight all these major studios into destroying themselves as revenge for not sticking by him. All this shit REALLY went into overdrive after he was accused. And since then, western studios and streaming became literally incapable of not loosing money. The timing lines up perfectly.

Do soldiers have to earn the rank of ensign or is it just the default for everyone? The stupid kids on the show seem be expecting that everyone graduates as captains. Like the grand prize kek

not to divert from /trek/ discussion but the only franchise I've seen come back from its 20 year hiatus and be in the least bit tolerable were Mike Judge's KOTH and Beavis and Butthead
Everything else has been heartbreaking. They ruined my precious Frasier too.

New ideas are just non-existent now.
HBO just announced they're doing a new show based on Baldur's Gate 3, a video game.
They used to make the best shit the world had ever seen and now they can't think beyond video game adaptations and milking that tits and dragons show.

Anyone from the Academy who graduates starts at the rank of Ensign. That's what bugs me the most about Captain Quirky Chungus. According to the Trek canon she is someone who graduated Starfleet Academy, served an entire career rising the ranks to eventually become Captain, and yet somehow now she becomes a barefoot wine aunt who can't figure out how to sit in a chair. This bitch has an entire ship's worth of crew (most of them being students) but apparently she doesn't give a shit about any of them, because she wants to walk around barefoot and read books all day.

Here's everything you need to know about this new show that's designed for literal toddlers

It's designed for toddlers, so you need to get a life and stop caring about it. I can't imagine being a grown adult and getting upset for this show that looks like a Star Trek themed subway surfers, please just get a hobby. Even though I think most of you literally just found out about this.

I haven't confirmed or denied that this show for 3 year olds contains a proud exploration of Romulan queer identity in the 24th century.

I think ever since 2016 Hollywood has been purging or having problematic writers go in certain directions. Anything even slightly offensive was equated with Trump/right wing plus Safe/Marvel movies were making enough bookoo bucks. They thought Star Trek was going to be a safe bet because it is a show about inclusiveness, except there is always offensive overt elements to it. Like in pic related they tried to go harder and have Riker kiss an actual man but early 90s that was a no go.

The last actual Trek thing I watched was Orville, its not great but at least it tries to be like what Trek was.
>>
>>217805115
Aside from a few props the actual cost of a lot of those episodes must’ve been nearly nothing. Over half the episodes are just standing in an already built set while they pretend an alien entity is fucking up their computer

Racism is so weird in Star Trek. Like humans are so enlightened and there’s no mention of each other’s races (which is why it was such a progressive show) but casual and institutional racism is recommended and sound when it comes to different alien species. And when a character (like Rom) comes along and breaks from the bell curve it’s literally treated like a “one of the good ones” moment.

The whole point is the Federation are space wizards constantly tinkering with shit while all the other races live normal spacefaring lives. We pack our ships full of experimental nonsense that gives us bullshit outs every time. Hell, in the Delta quadrant we've even had people feeding fucking souls into their warp core.
>>
I have to admit, the amount of times another race has come across the Federation randomly poking some space thing with beams to see what happens and ask what the fuck they're doing is especially high versus the other way around. At least with the major powers. I don't recall Captain Picard ever coming across a Romulan basically doing the cosmic level of poking a dead rat with a stick.

I would've stopped and apologized to the aliens, then made upgrades that gave absolutely certainty they could never break through or drain the ship, then came back and burned every last one I needed to get home, minus the last few lightyears, in order to wipe all logs and lose any tails that remained. Even if the worst came to be and I was courtmartialed or even executed, my crew would be home safe, and that's all that would matter.

It'd be like how AI has been going for the past few years, oddly compelling when the AI pumps out completely baffling, inexplicable garbage, but then as it gets more and more advanced, the results become more believable but less entertaining... and then instead everyone starts fretting about the political and ethical implications...

That's the exact reason I wouldn't want hang out at Ten Forward. I'd hate to brush shoulders with the top level of the ship. Is there a dive bar equivalent to Ten Forward on the ship? I'm much rather go there and party with my enlisted bros. Speaking from experience, as someone drank too much at last year's Christmas work do. And said some things I should not have said to my boss's boss. Regularly going to the same ship's pub where the first-officer and bridge crew also go. Is a nightmare. I want to relax. Let my hair down. Scull piss. Hit the dance floor. Wink at every cute ensign that glances at me. Talk shit about ranking officers. Just be a dickhead. Without having to deal with Riker's disappointed glare when I walk past him down the corridor next Monday.

My theory is that 95% of humanity died out once replicators and holodecks got invented, after that the remaining 5% who had enough drive and ambition were the only ones who still bothered to have kids. The humanity of Star Trek are a kind of superperson descended from guys who had the ability to remain functional even when offered unlimited replicated amphetamines and holo-pussy.

Never heard this story before. Looking it up, it's even worse. From the actors wikipedia and the 'sodes memoryalpha:

>British actor David Rappaport was the first actor chosen for the role of Kivas Fajo, but he attempted suicide over the weekend after a few days of filming were completed. Director Timothy Bond stated, "[T]here was a story going around that they had found him in his car with a tube running from the exhaust. Obviously I had to replace him." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 197). A new actor was cast and all the scenes that featured Rappaport were refilmed. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., pp. 125-126)

>Rappaport struggled with depression later in his life. Just before his death, he had been cast and begun filming for the role of Kivas Fajo in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Most Toys". During filming, Rappaport attempted suicide, and the scenes he had completed were later discarded when actor Saul Rubinek was hurriedly brought in by producers to replace him and complete the episode. The scenes of Rappaport as Kivas Fajo were included on the Season 3 Blu-ray Disc release of Star Trek: The Next Generation.[4]

>Rappaport died by suicide on 2 May 1990. He shot himself in the chest in Laurel Canyon Park in the San Fernando Valley in California.[2][5]

So, he was cast. And they were already half way through filming. Tried to kill himself. Rubbished his scenes, recast it. He's presumably in the hospital for a bit. And a couple months later tries again. This time successfully. Suicide via gunshot to the chest is gnarly.

Origami isn't supposed to unfold, and it supposedly being a chicken has no relevance besides sounding lolsorandumb. Paul is a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid, why is he even referring to an Earth animal? He has probably never even encountered one due to the entire galaxy being separated for the past hundred or so years. Why not refer to a more familiar Klingon, or Tellarite animal? Surely the concept of origami has spread further than the chicken has, and even developed independently on any worlds that invent paper.

>Exactly when and where the chicken was domesticated was controversial. Genomic studies estimated that the chicken was domesticated 8,000 years ago[50] in Southeast Asia and spread to China and India 2,000 to 3,000 years later. Archaeological evidence appeared to support domestic chickens in Southeast Asia well before 6000 BC, China by 6000 BC and India by 2000 BC.[50][54][55] An early study proposed that a single domestication event of the red junglefowl in present-day Thailand gave rise to the modern chicken.[56]

>Chickens are descended primarily from the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) and are scientifically classified as the same species.[49] Domesticated chickens freely interbreed with populations of red junglefowl.[49]

>Re-examination of bones from over 600 sites, and dating of those from 23 sites, identified the earliest probable chicken bones as from central Thailand, at Ban Non Wat, some 3,250 years ago. The paleo-anatomist Joris Peters and the bioarchaeologist Greger Larson state that this coincided with the growing of rice, and propose that wild jungle fowl were attracted to eat the rice seeds, nested nearby, and became domesticated. Skeletons of birds in the Gallus genus were used as grave goods at the site, confirming domestication.[60]

Many people don't seem to realize that trek deliberately does old napoleonic warfare with a scifi twist.
The ship combat is age of sail horatio hornblower stuff mixed with a ww2 naval garnish.
Someone pointed out that the hand phasers are basically used like flintlocks - they even have a similar profile.
Ground combat has them still fighting hand to hand like they would be with muskets back then.
Ships get so close to one another because they're basically shooting broadsides.
Beaming over once the shields are down are the boarding parties.

Very few people seem to understand this. I highly recommend you guys watch Master and Commander - some madlads have even uploaded it on youtube - just to see how similar it is to trek.

Friendly minder that First Contact would have been 8/10 if:
>the D survived Generations and was there instead of the E. Accomplishes two things:
>the satisfaction of the D settling an old score by outright leading the fleet in destroying a Cube in a fight
>the D lends great coherence to Picard's suicidal intransigence on staying and fighting. Fighting for the D, not the E that he barely knew (E is still based and gorgeous though)
>and the big one: the Queen doesn't exist, the Borg speak through Locutus of Borg (cloned Picard body)
Although controversial, for some users FC would be even better if Sisko replaced Woodard so it's both captains moving past their mutual Borg trauma
>>
>>217813063
If the Borg could just reproduce through cloning, why would they bother with assimilation? They could grow their population to octillions of drones without ever encountering resistance from races who don't want to be assimilated.

Face of the Borg terror during their first incursion = assimilated Picard = they understand seeing Locutus again would fuck with and demoralise SF even further in a scenario where they think a representative is needed so bothered to invest in a lengthy cloning process

What? You're also missing the point, the explanation presented is simply "good enough" in order for us to arrive at Stewart playing off against himself in the third act of FC via Picard vs. Locutus. TNG was made for syndication so of course the plots were repetitive. You weren't expected to have seen every episode in order. While this may be the sixth time you've watched Data befriend a child, it may be someone's else first Star Trek episode ever. One of the promises of streaming and short episode counts was they were supposed to do away with redundant plotlines.

I've never read any of his Hornblower series. But, I have read a couple of C. S. Forester's other novels. The last one I read was The Good Shepard. It's about a US Navy captain who is commanding an escort fleet across the Atlantic in WW2. And really just a two day period when they're being attacked by a U-Boat wolfpack. It's all first-person. So, mostly his internal monologue, reasoning though decisions and self-doubt. Pretty good. I was thinking about Star Trek when reading. How a show should incorporate more of it's vibe. He writes with verisimilitude. Like, the crew's professionalism, ship's routine, how they interact, command structure and the heavy weight of responsibilities. It feels real. Like in TOS. Kirk is always being handing clipboards by yeomans because he has to sign some paperwork. That sort of mundane work needed to run a ship in a disciplined organisation. These small details were added by TOS writers. Who were veterans on WW2 and Korea, and it was just second-nature to them. They just knew that's how things were done. And how those details that add verisimilitude are non-existent in NuTrek.

Is Avery Brooks dead or rotting in bed in a coma? why is everyone treating the situation like he's dead? Did he actually phone in the 3 sentences of the epilog or did they use ai?

How to reboot Trek:
Kill the current iteration of it and make it clear that it's its own continuity.
Rerelease the Remastered TOS and TNG in streaming on every network plus do a theatrical tour of every film and season finale or twoparter in movie theaters for a year.
Announce remasters of ENT, DS9, and VOY in that order exclusively on Prime or Netflix to get some cash in. The reason for ENT is because it's the most like TOS and TNG and has the most recent CGI so it can be put back together faster where DS9 needs remastering of physical shots and Voyager's CGI is old.
Get Shatner involved in a project, any project.
License Star Trek to Six Flags for a theme park.

From what I understand he doesn’t outright hate Trek or the role, he just gets annoyed that it’s his most famous work and it’s all people want to talk about. He sees himself as a “professional actor” who has done multiple things. I think it’s mostly just anecdotal redditors who say he is mean for not loving the role and LARPing as Sisko IRL. From what I’ve heard though he is actually pretty nice

Because its not racism. Its specieism. Who EVOLVED separately for millions of years. The hybrid shit, outside of medical intervention, was always fucking stupid, one of Trek's original sins.

They aren't separated by thousands or even tens of thousands of years, but by millions. Billions really. It wouldn't be far off for others species to criticize humans for being entirely bullshit and lies, where the supposedly nice ones just shrug their shoulders when the sociopaths engage in vicious bloodthirsty behavior.
>>
>>217815170
oh he for sure is probably a super nice guy but like many others in star trek he just did the role as a job and moved on. i think thats 100% fine. its just funny that nu-trek dedicated an entire episode to him despite knowing he woudlnt ever come back

It baffles me that the 20 minute children's show actually managed some jokes that made me laugh yet somehow they are trying to cram academy with jokes and not a single one lands.

Sure yeah that fictional "modern audience" but there are even sub groups of them that like things that others don't

The DS9 episode is great, I quite enjoyed an episodic trek show that didn't jump to universe destroying stakes every week
Something we haven't seen since enterprise
It's actually kind of embarrassing that LD and Prod are the only good trek stuff released since and they are the throwaway cartoon spinoffs yet show more respect for the franchise then the mainline currently is
