I think an origins in CP that are unique 4 first hours of the game and affect the rest of the game in major ways like how your character talks a who they know will be really cool. A corpo should not be the same as a street kid yet all CP2077 characters were kinda streetkids. Even in BG3 you could've had different dialogue depending on your race and class, which upped the roleplay value dramatically. Give players ways to imagine their characters in the world instead of wam bam 20 minutes openings that didn't matter in the slightest.

That's the whole point, the protag is a standin for the player, and the acting or the writing cannot be too interesting or opinionated because it has to work for whatever the player wants to do with their character. Even with "immutable" protags like Geralt in Witcher he has to be kept somewhat bland. It's just the restriction of the genre itself, if you want good writing and good acting you need to put that into NPCs that the writers have ultimate control over.

Papa Nier doesn't just look like the "protective dad" archetype, he looks like an angry and violent neanderthal, while having a personality that's actually rather friendly and often seems goofy or even autistic. He's just a bit bizarre and it's not really something you'll have seen anywhere else. The bishonen young boy protag in comparison just looks so generic and run of the mill that it instantly loses people's interest. But if you actually want the story and themes to come together and make sense properly, he is the better protag to go with.
