>fps cap should be enabled by default

I've had comments suggesting as much, but I can't think of any games where this setting is enabled by default. What would you set the default as?
>>
>>538248448
I set mine to 120FPS and I also have vsynch enabled.
Some people have super powerful PCs and when they open the game, their PC starts flying as the game goes at 5000fps. The FPS cap is just there to prevent incidents like these, the players will later change to whatever they need or uncap it if that's what they want.
>>
>>538248448
I’m pretty certain it’s enabled by default almost everywhere. 100 Hz is a good bet.
>>538248647
The problem with enabling VSync, while it solves the uncapped FPS issue, is that VSync on older GPU SUCKS. As in, makes the game noticably, massively sluggish.

Dude, I've tried. All that's taught me is that there are people on /v/ who are so desperate for attention that they too seek out the niche threads and actively work to derail them with bait posts. I guess they've realized there's a smaller, but more dedicated audience for those threads and therefore it's easier to get people to engage with their posts.
Just look at this place for an example of what I'm talking about. Tourists come to /agdg/ all the time to post twitter ragebait slop that belongs on /v/. Why? Because it's easier to get an audience here, this general moves at about 1/100th the speed on /v/.

>Homelette demo 6

Charming little puzzle platformer with a character switching mechanic, seems geared towards kids.
Start menu works well, saving and loading works, options menu has everything you need.
I found no bugs, played normally and finished level 3.
Fairly straightforward controls, the pause menu shows you the controls but has French keybinds even if you're playing in English.
Player is eased in and all the mechanics are explained as you play.
The level select screen could probably use some beautification work.
The platforming and puzzle aspect of finding your way and switching characters is engaging enough for you to want to continue playing through all the levels.
Overall, not much to critique about this game, everything seems to work as far as I played. The art could probably be improved, the levels could use a bit more life and movement as is they are too static.

>>
>>538266671
What size would you recommend? I read some online guides that recommended 64x64, but in hindsight I think those guides may have been aimed at just making pixel art rather than sprites intended for a video game.
>>
>>538266883
if you're new to making games, i'd stick with something tiny, like 8x8 or 16x16
it might seem too small at first, but when creating multiple assets with animations, you'll be able to learn the process pretty quickly, and scale your skills up over time
as you get better, you can increase the canvas size and complexity of your sprites
i think it's important to continue actually making your game while improving your pixel art skills, rather than fully focusing on just the sprites
maybe try making a basic platformer with tiny sprites to get used to the whole process, and then begin working on bigger canvases
>>
>>538266883
Really depends on what aesthetic and design you're going for. The fact that you're asking at all means you should probably just work on your art in general before worrying about what you're going to use for a game. Once you get better you'll know what you prefer to work with.

Have you ever wondered what if a one shot doujin is made in a game engine like godot instead of it being a static printed punch of pages.

>>
>>538267163
>>538267252
Thanks for the advice.
I'm an okay artist I guess, I just have very little experience with pixel art. I don't know the "rules" of the medium, and I know even less about to translate that art into an actual game.
I'll start with a fairly low resolution and limited color palette and work my way up from there I guess.

I don't like it. I've read one of those fancy interactive comics before and I prefer the traditional purity of the medium. I'd rather have a virtual comic inside my game that behaves as a comic would in the real world, without any music, animation or interactivity other than flipping pages.

There should be a term for this kind of thinking.
That once you have the engine done that the game will come together quick because you're just slapping together a few levels.
But in reality the levels are what is going to take you the longest and you haven't even realized it yet.

>Planets For Sale

Asks to connect to internet first, good.
Game is still in the early stages of dev.
Two types of menus.
Lots of placeholder art, it's hard to understand what's going on, still lots of default Godot buttons and art.
Looks like a finance and management sim game where you have to sell a planet's resources in the galactic marketplace to make the planet profitable.
Has a pause menu but once in-game there's no way to get back to the start menu.
I like the background music in the menu.
Once in-game UI gets a lot better, nice animations for the planets, menus are a bit sluggish, could use more juice and sound.
Maybe I didn't play attention but it's not readily apparent what the win condition is, earning starts?
Market analysis could probably be a scrolling ticker somewhere for easy look up.
I'd need to read the tutorial with more attention but I think this game could be fun once it's more polished and has more intrigue.
Overall, game is still uncooked but has potential to be fun, already some interesting 3D animations.
>>
>>538268772
content treadmill?
>>
Wagie Run made me nostalgic for PS2 era games. I like the relaxed style and the flavor text. The dev should probably not charge too much for it when it releases though, because it's so simple.

Dirk is emulating a retro adventure game pretty well, the music and graphics are perfect for what the game is going for. Wish the game was more straightforward about what you're supposed to do, but it's alright.

Aculto is really intuitive and made me nostalgic for The Sims. But it's not my kind of game since it's aimless, I know one of the streamers went nuts over it.

I was going to write a long ass rant about how you're completely missing my point and instead just projecting some strawman on me that I think sex is bad. But honestly after spending 3 hours working on a feature and then running it and seeing it work perfectly, I'm on such a high I don't even care anymore man.

Halo looked fucking amazing in 1999, and the physics behind it, especially the vehicles, were mind blowing. I had never seen a game that mixed running around on foot and vehicles to that level of fidelity before, and honestly, it wasn't until Halo (and Operation Flashpoint) came out in 2001 that you could play a game like that. Tribes had vehicles, but nothing like Halo. All that said, personally I think Halo's visual style peaked with Halo CE, and it's been all downhill since, with some literal bright spots here and there.

>Conviction Chronicles

Game takes like a minute to load.
The initial dev's splash art skips too fast to even read, as do the warnings.
The tips in the loading screens aren't centered.
Start menu looks good and intriguing,
Two different kinds of menu styles, should probably be more uniform (opinion).
A bit too many loading screens.
The hourglass icon to continue should probably be another type of icon, a blinking arrow for instance, otherwise it makes one think we need to wait instead of pressing a button.
Once in-game there is no indication of controls anywhere.
Need to spam buttons to find out WASD/Arrows to move and Space to interact, Tab for menu, Q/E to rotate camera.
Mouse and keyboard both work for menus but makes it a bit jarring to use both, should only use keyboard imo.
I think each character should have their own distinct dialogue color so you can really tell who's speaking, or some other way to better understand at a glance, the current colors are also a bit too vivid.
A few typos here and there.
Overall, the death game idea and setup is cool, there is certainly potential to be a commercial success here but it takes a bit too long to get started and there are no clues for anything to ease the player in, there's a bit too much telling and not enough seeing. I can appreciate that this type of game takes a lot of work to get right, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more but the introduction prologue required too much investment and reading right away without letting go. Everything also gives me this feeling of beeing too "zoomed in".

>Castella

Game starts up, still a prototype it seems.
No indication of what you're supposed to do.
Straight into the game, no menus for anything.
GPU going full load.
Interface and UI looks refined already, good feedback.
After fumbling around with no idea it seems kinda like a god game where I have to give orders on what to do, what to build without having control over the minions.
I like the art style.
Minions work on their own.
The red [x] for actions seems a bit counter-intuitive, another symbol should be used to better understand what it's doing.
3 PM everyone is having a siesta including the animals.
System cursor appears above game cursor.
The actions and buttons should have a hover label or something else telling you what happens if you click them or what they're used for.
Overall, not much I can critique about this prototype, it certainly has potential, what's there looks good and has good sound and visual feedback, I can see this being really fun down the line and certainly want more but right now still uncooked.

I've just played the Marmoreal demo. Just in case the creator is still around, I think the game is really cool. The anime-style cutscenes are awesome. The gameplay is interesting, but I wish there was an easy mode, it's taking a while for me to progress because I suck at videogames. Also, I wish the walls and ceilings had their top modeled like isometric games do, the see-through shader is cool and all but the levels would look better without it.

>Void Crawlers

Another prototype game.
No options for anything yet, a volume option would've been nice.
FPS uncapped, GPU full load.
Interesting menus, well animated.
I'm playing a Saturn game within a PC game?
The boosting mechanic seems a bit wonky and goes backwards instead of forward.
Some enemies can get stuck behind the pillars, or hidden behind map textures.
Kinda looks like a Binding of Isaac setup with labyrinthine rooms you have to clear.
You can just stay still and tank all the damage from enemies, not much of a challenge.
Going back into old rooms seems to bug out and freeze the game for a bit.
Aiming at enemies seems you kinda have to lead your shots.
These beeps & boops aren't that engaging.
Going through a bunch of rooms with repetitive gameplay but no end in sight, so I got bored.
Overall, there is some potential to be fun here but since it's still early in development not much I can critique that would matter. My opinion is that the ship should have more grip, more juice, cooler gun types, you should never be able to get stuck in any kind of geometry it should just flow, be fast, and shooting should be really enjoyable with nice feedback and cool sounds since that's the most important part of the game: shooting.

>Untitled Dome Game

Straight into the menu, no options but at least a small tutorial to indicate controls.
A 1-bit tower defense where you have to gather resources to upgrade your dome.
The risk-reward and tensions are easily understood while the resource management and dome upgrading can keep you engaged and wanting to go "faster and harder".
Uses both the mouse to aim and buy upgrades while also using the keyboard to navigate and gather resources, could probably be better implemented for everything to either use only the mouse or the keyboard (and both being an option).
I didn't realize at first that you could pick up more than 1 resource even without the upgrade, which slowed me down.
UI at the bottom could probably be larger and I didn't realize that it had a countdown for when the next wave hits.
Player character sprite is too blurry compared to the other pixelated assets.
The map is always the same every game, that might be a good or bad thing, but it could be procedurally generated to add a bit more variety.
Overall, nice little tower defense game that is engaging enough but at the end of the day it doesn't do anything different from other games of this type. I think you should go harder with the upgrades early on and allow more time to build up and gather resources, this then allows you to also go harder with the enemy waves and for the player to enjoy the shooting more instead of this gradual 1 wave > 1 upgrade > 1 slightly bigger wave > 1 upgrade etc.

It's a bit too original. Gamers don't want to play original-likes until they are proven to be fun. Plenty of marketing work went into it, but there's only so much a solodev can do. Posting on social media does nothing for a game that people don't already want to play. One of the biggest mistakes indies make is thinking that they can gaslight gamers into thinking that they want to play something that they don't already want to play. That is a privilege reserved for AA/AAA studios with multi-million dollar marketing budgets.

>Project King

A King's Field-like?
Basic menu but already quite a few settings available which is nice, frame limit should probably disable if vsync is enabled.
No music or sounds for anything.
Using the "Quit Game" button makes the game crash.
Saving and loading works.
Only the basic traversal and item gathering mechanics seem to be there.
Not unpleasant aesthetics, already kinda reminiscent of the game it's trying to copy.
The camera panning with the arrow keys is too sensitive, it seems better to look around with the mouse at this point.
Going up the ladder works but coming back down you can still move around at the top when you're waiting to attach which can make you fall and die.
Overall, it's too early in development for any kind of critique since it's barely a game but what's there seems fine. Looking forward to more, some monsters and sword whacking.

Instead of worrying about hypothetical reddit drama, worry about realizing your game instead, because actually releasing a finished product is infinitely more challenging than tardwrangling goo goo ga gas who will call your game a ripoff.

I am working on an /agdg/ killer game. It's a game that everyone here will praise as amazing, but I'll do no marketing and it will flop disastrously and demoralize everyone here. My flop will leave the thread unusable for weeks.

>Cross Box Online

Not sure how I would classify this game and what even the exact rules of it are, but it seems fairly straightforward.
No menu to config anything, you create a player and go straight to the board.
Reminds me of PSP/DS puzzle games.
You can spam emotes really fast, maybe it needs a small delay before it can fire again.
A bit of relaxing or exciting music would go a long way, maybe it could even be tuned to how much the board is filled.
When changing the AI level slider the number always stays at 9.
Hard to discern any kind of strategy or what a good starting point could be.
Overall, it's a very basic game but that what is there works just fine, with a bit more juice, music, pointers or helpful tips, maybe some variety could be added with certain squares giving out bonus points if captured, or maybe even some kind of special item you can capture that can destroy other player's lines so it's more of a battle, or it could make your lines uncrossable if you manage to capture it. Could be made a lot more fun but right now it's too basic to keep any kind of interest.

>doroboarashi onara shizopidoras

Meme game only played in the browser.
Needs English subtitles for those of us not versed in Pidorism.
This is actually a nice CS surfing map, you can surf fast, go off the map and boomerang back.
I found the hidden bunny beneath the map.
It has anime girls which is always a bonus.
Overall, this could actually be really fun if the dev fleshes out the movement part instead of trying to shitpost.

zomg! Your reviews are quality.
Yes the game is uncooked, raw even. Thank you for giving it a shot still. The GPU goes crazy because the framerate is unclamped, not sure how to do that yet.
I see that you've figured out some building stuff. I have some additional questions for you if you don't mind answering...
1.Have you played Rimworld?
2.When you were fumbling around initially, did you have any expectations on how the game should be played? As in, when you realized it was a managerial "god game", was it different from what you thought the game might be?

Thank you, I wish I could see a video footage of your experience. Maybe I can post some reviews of my own...

almost every successful indie game could have been ripped off ten times before it got released.
the reason this doesn't happen is that nobody knows which games will be very successful like Hollow Knight, Braid, Papers Please, Stardew Valley, Lethal Company, etc.
this is unknowable.
and if this is unknowable when the game can be seen and in some cases played, it's even more unknowable when you're deciding to make it.
this proves that every breakout success is a fluke. (You) can't beat this logic.
>>
>>538295027
1. No.
2. My first idea was I needed to select and command one of the toons to interact with stuff and build something, but that didn't work. I didn't don't understand what the Area button and Stockpile does. I think it requires just a bit of guiding and a goal to work towards maybe or if it's open ended just say so let the player have their fun in their way.

>Not a single game has ever flopped due to a lack of marketing
Fear and Hunger was sub-20 reviews for 2 years before it caught on. Imagine if the dev didn't immediately start working on the sequel out of pure passion and just gave up game dev after 1 year of no sales.
>>
>>538296057
You can't tell whether a game is good or not until experiencing it. You only get the full experience late into development, which takes a lot of time. This is why farming sims for example are so had to develop. They don't come together until it's almost done, by which point you're too far in to start over.
>>
>>538296575
It was not available on steam. That's not a lack of marketing, that's a lack of serviceability.
>>
>>538296057
what makes a game good or not, successful or not, is how well it's executed and that is very clear and objective
you have a very ideaguy-y notion of success if you think games can be "ripped off"

>Dungeon Crawler Test

Asks to connect to the internet.
Interesting menu, music level is really loud on start.
Options have everything.
The UI is huge, looks like it's geared towards mobile.
Really generic and unappealing style.
The movement of the character seems rather clunky and stuttery.
The speech text seems rather frequent and hides a lot of the combat underneath.
Hard to understand what this is all about.
Now it's asking me to watch an ad to earn 800 gold...
Quitting the game makes it lock up (probably because the internet is blocked?).
Overall, I can't say much about this game, kinda looks like asset flip to put on a mobile store. The combat isn't fun and that's the most important part besides the looting, there are too many systems right away and they're confusing. I forgot it was supposed to be a dungeon crawler. Not a good experience, needs to be polished and the player eased in.

I still remember reading this on the long drive home from the store. I opened the box in the car and I was reading the first pages of the manual and I was so excited. It promised so much freedom and so many possibilities.
My mom took one look at me and told my dad there was no way I'd sit through dinner and they got a pizza along the way. I was eating pizza while installing the game and I got permanent grease stains on the box, disks and manual. I think it was the first week of the winter break too so I had weeks to explore the galaxy.
How do I make a game that has this effect on players? Is it the Is it even possible for an indie dev 33 years later? I don't mean making a game like this but the feeling and the desire to explore a game world given what resources we have as solo devs.

Okay what the fuck are you talking about? It was released in 2018, here's a snapshot from 2021. The one from 2020 still had only 20 reviews but it got corrupted and I can't check it on wayback machine for some reason. That's 2 years until 20 reviews, 3 years until 200 reviews, anyone here would have called it a flop but suddenly, magically after 3 years the game becomes good right? Because marketing wasn't the problem right?

>Tamabuki

Another game early in its dev cycle.
Simple menu but has options.
I quite like the lowpoly 3D assets and character.
Intriguing atmosphere.
Not sure how to feel about the Tamagochi mechanic to be allowed to shoot, not something I'd personally consider engaging unless there is more to it, maybe more interaction with the player itself as a kind of familiar or maybe even as limiting factor where you have to rely 100% of it to make progress - survival-style, the pixelization makes it hard to understand what you're looking at for the Tamabuki.
The range of the gun seems rather short.
The toy shop with all the /agdg/ game boxes on the shelves is really cool.
Overall, there is potential here to have something engaging and even popular, but it's too early to say much else about the game. Dev needs to start memeing their game, aura farm by posting art of the characters (especially if cute girls) and that's already halfway to success. After that it will need an engaging story and good atmosphere and exploration.
>>
>>538298816
You need a really good hook. When you get it, the player will dismiss any pebbles in the way. I've felt that way over the Jazz Jackrabbits games a while ago, they're just awesome, forgotten gems of the 16-bit platformer era.

Thank you for playing, 15-san.

The tamagotchi mechanic will get more tied to gameplay as things carry on; as it stands it's still a bit shallow so I understand your concern.

The range of the gun IS short! I've heard many complaints. I didn't want to give it infinite range since that felt a bit too easy, but I'll definitely be extending its range while thinking of ways to balance the game around this (I'm at least adding damage drop-off so you can't snipe things from a mile away).

I appreciate your optimism on the potential of the game. It warms my heart to hear that and gives me developer energy! I'm very excited for when I get to add more story and exploration to the game, but I've been focusing on more core things. Hopefully that can come in the next few DD's.

I haven't thought much about posting character art and meme'ing the game. I'll definitely give it a shot although I'm not 100% sure what that looks like (I've mostly just been posting progress pictures and videos on Xeeter).

Also, the game has a cute girl AND a cute guy! (See pic related; he's got a model, too, but there's no point to having him in the demo yet.)

there's this engine called BYOND that does something amazing despite being incredibly old in every other way: it allows you to make multiplayer games -truly- as if you are making a single player game, and i mean literally no difference at all, never do you have to touch netcode. it's massively multiplayer too, 120 players per server before lag starts usually.

i dont get why no modern engine can follow the same model they did. it's genius if you look into how its done.

the sad part is BYOND would still be very good for making games despite being outdated in every way except netcode, but the dealbreaker is you are locked onto their platform and cant put your game on steam/etc and their platform is completely dead.
>>538307486
you could add sharding yourself so each map is a separate server so if you have 10 maps (typical of byond games) thats 1200 players

I'm also working on a text game. One thing I struggled with is synonyms, but I decided that I have no interest in that and it doesn't really offer any meaningful flexibility. So the only alias I allow is a one character shortcut.
I've spent way too long on the repl part, and decoupling it as much as I can from any other aspect. I think it will be worth it because my ultimate goal is to use some kind of engine/framework for something "close to" a text adventure, basically a minimal UI.
I see you're using Scheme, something I've always been interested in, but I'm just working in Python though I originally started in C (as a way to learn C, actually)

i hate people like this. soulless dead eyes. open gaping mouth. i hate them because i researched biologically why they do it. why evolution made it that way. they're hylics, which is the same as npcs, nature created them to be the bottom of the human heirarchy, ruled over by others, gave them very little soul so they'd be okay with it too. nature gave us a slave class purposely because it benefited human's overall survival. their gaping mouths literally signify for you to put your dick in there, shows they're fully submitted to you or in this cause whatever authority they perceive and therefore serve. showing they're willing to be dominated at the severest level without any resistance.

I get it you like anime girls, but clearly the game is for tank enthusiasts. Having anime girls is kinda like having fursonas, it's something you leave to the modders. Or if you're an absolute mad lad you release it as DLC

Sure, but the problem with steam is there is always some sale, some next fest, some AAA launch or III launch designed specifically to fuck you over.

The only winning play is to say "fuck it we ball" and launch when you want. I will not move my launch date because of some lame "autumn sale" (something I have literally never heard of before until just now)

>Astra Bestiary

A critter-collecting adventure game similar to Pogeyman.
First time launching the game it didn't go past the dev logo, had to relaunch for it to work.
Polished menus, all the options needed for this type of game are there.
Right away one my nitpicks is with the pixel font, these are always hard to read the bigger the game window, an option to have a different font would be appreciated.
Playing at 2x window size and it looks better.
Another nitpick with the menus is that there's too much of the brown/yellow paper color and the buttons tend to blend in with the rest of the UI.
The intro and setup are fairly basic, we're dropped off outside of a town right away to explore.
More emphasis should be put on a goal for the player to keep in mind and work towards.
During combat our critter has a visible health bar with a percentage but the same cannot be said for the enemy critter (is this a bug or do we need to know about the critter beforehand or sth else?).
It seems certain critters straight up appear in front of you to fight, there is no apparent condition that says you're entering a fight like tall grass or NPCs in Pogeyman.
The game seems quite hard out of the gate, all the monsters are too strong for my critter and I keep dying.
The pixelart is well done and charming but the color palette could probably use more work, more complementary colors instead of everything being analogous.
Overall, I can feel there was a lot of work put into this game but it's not quite there yet for me, the beginning is too rough, it should ease the player in with a shallower difficulty curve and more setup.
>>
any of you making mobile games? i keep seeing youtube vlogs of randos making fucktons of money from mobile compared to steam, and the quality standards arent as high
>>
>>538311352
You need 20 playtesters to even get anything on google play now where if any of them leave after 2 weeks then the period of review resets.
>>
>>538311352
No, mobile has been saturated since 2012 and you'll get even less exposure than steam. Think of whatever game you want to make and check the app store/play store, there's already thousands and thousands of them. The only way to get exposure is through paid marketing, it's not like PC where some guy is going to see your shitpost on a basket weaving forum and then go check out your steam page.
>>
>>538311526
that sounds difficult but probably means its a barrier to entry that would make those who can pass it make even more money

>Bainok City of Fighters

Rudimentary menus, the logo has some soul but everything else needs work.
Options have the needed settings except for fullscreen toggle.
Once in-game it seems the fullscreen window shrinks and some it gets cut off at the bottom.
Played a bit of the intro, it explains how the combat works.
I'm disappointed this isn't a beat 'em up but turn-based.
Lots of placeholder art, every NPC is a male goon, no females in sight.
Once outside our apartment we need to find an enzyme to keep on living, we can talk to a bunch of NPCs and have fights.
A few typos in the text here and there, the anime-style character art doesn't really match the tone of the rest of the game.
The dialogue text could probably use a bit more juice, there is an option for typewriter text but it doesn't seem to be used.
Menus need more feedback, game in general needs more SFX, background noise etc.
During the fights the two character sprites are always the same ones.
Overall, it has the makings, or the beginnings, of what could be a decent game, seems the dev(s?) have a knack for stories and creating characters but sadly the gameplay isn't that engaging. During fights it needs have some voiced grunts, more feedback, too many moves available from the start, they should be gatekept and earned as the game unfolds. It clearly needs a lot more work to get everything looking on the same page, it needs more action, more violence (it's too softy atm), more grit, more vixens.

>Dark Grace

Straight to main menu, nice background music, there is something lurking behind the curtains.
Options and credits button don't do anything.
Starting a new game leads to some type of character creator, still placeholder menus and buttons.
In-game the graphics look really nice, game gives us hints of the controls.
Zooming the camera into first person allows us to see our cut off neck when looking behind which is unsettling.
Sometimes running with shift doesn't seem to allow jumping simultaneously.
Jumping seems rather floaty.
I'm a fan of this game's style, very early 2000s.
Moving away from a container should close the item dialog so you don't have to click the X to close.
You can get stuck behind doors when opening them.
The windup when attacking is brutal but it also makes the combat engaging, I need it needs to be adjusted slightly, hit detection also isn't great.
There's some kind of bug where I constantly hear running footsteps.
There is no pause menu to quit the game or adjust any options, need to ALT+F4 to quit.
Overall, I enjoyed what I saw of the game and I'm eager to see more and where it leads. I like the environment and assets style, it reminds me of old Harry Potter games. Still uncooked atm but what's there is already interesting.

I can code anything but engines barely even have an interface for code.
Unreal and unity have more in common with photoshop than an IDE.
Someone needs to make an engine for coders.

>Ultra Plane

No menus, straight into game.
I like that it has a tutorial for the controls, well made and diegetic with the rest of the game.
It has a pause menu with a few options,
Ship is extremely hard to control, I don't think it should roll with the mouse.
Even at the lowest sensitivity it's really easy for me to lose control and struggle to look in the direction I want.
Boosting helps maintain control, maybe it's played better with a flight stick or controller?
Sometimes I'm pressing A or D to yaw and it doesn't at all, almost like it's stuck, and then just starts rolling over, pretty frustrating.
Game seems resource-heavy for such barebone graphics.
Gun and rocket sounds and animations seem fine but because it's so frustrating to aim where I want it kinda ruins the rest.
I like the vibe it's going for, in a way it reminds me of Blur (the racing game) with how the UI is shown.
Overall, I wanted to enjoy the game and there is potential underneath for it to be fun but the controls are too frustrating. Needs more polish and more game.
>>
>>538310854

>Nine Star Barrage

No intro or menu, the game starts right away.
Some kinda top-down Metroid lookalike?
I like that the character closes one-eye when aiming.
The UI is well done and easily understood, good tutorial.
Music is tied to how much health you have, but is also not constantly in panic good when you're low health.
There is a lot of unused screen real-estate which could be use for... stuff.
Environments are repetitive but not displeasing.
The stamina recovers a bit too slow compared to how fast it can be used but I guess that's a balance choice.
Enemies reacts well to the player but they swarm a bit too hard and to use melee you often need to take damage.
Reloading, acquiring health and ammo could use a little SFX for more feedback.
Overall, nice atmosphere for such a simple game, the game flows well but combat could probably be more satisfying and strategic. Needs a bit of story, different environments etc.

>ZHERO

Again no intro, no menu of any kind.
Typical Godot stutter until it loads all the assets and sounds.
Interesting visuals.
Some Godot default assets are visible.
After completing each room you get to pick one of 3 upgrades, I like how it looks with the Windows 2000 dialogs.
At some point I was in the upgrade scene but enemies where hitting me and I died, the game underneath should be frozen when picking upgrades.
You kind of lose track of your character during combat and it's hard to tell if you're taking damage, everything blends in a too much.
Needs a bit of music to set the tone.
You can spam R to quickly switch between sword and gun in combat, not sure if intended.
Made it to room 9 but didn't try very hard, is there some payout at the end? Maybe some boss enemy?
Overall, I like the aesthetics and the idea it's going for but it's still raw and thus hard to find the fun in it. I didn't understand what the cards thing at the bottom are supposed to do. Dev needs to lean further into the schizo parts but make things more readable, maybe some swearing here and there DMC-style when you kill monsters. I'm imagining a huge tower you have to climb and fight through 'Let It Die' style, just an idea.

They're a good indication of what streamers will do, they spend 90% of the time focused on things that will make their stream look good/bad like trying 20 times to change the window resolution instead of actually criticizing the gameplay. They also missed how much their own interaction affected how fun they found the game to be, for example the 'gameplay' of wasteland bites where brimstone devolved into markiplier and his buddy piled on. In reality a guy sitting alone in his room playing a chore simulator is going to be bored out of his mind.

I've noticed my own game a few people just really, really latched onto and it's kind of cute, but also I think kind of out of your control. >Wonder of Blue

Nice dev logo, menu looks cute and has the needed options, I like the palette and music style picker.
The different menu entries could probably be centered in the center if there's not going be anything in the frame.
There should be some indication of which buttons to use to accept/go back, especially for keyboard users.
Game plays a lot better on a gamepad.
Reminiscent of GBA games, music is a bit repetitive.
Enemies almost always leap at you when you enter a room, after a while it becomes predictable and you can just dash right away.
Sometimes going through a door too early makes it not switch to the next room until you step out and go back in again.
Almost never used the cat attack seems pretty useless, often trying to hit enemies you stop just short of them and need to move closer and then take damage, maybe the range of attacks could be a *tiny* bit longer.
There is some readability issues with certain enemies blending in, the health bar also has those issues.
Alice is very cute.
Certain items from the queen/fairy/shopkeeper NPC don't have a description and often I don't buy anything from her because nothing sounds appealing or useful.
The map hide a big chunk of the corner.
Overall, a cute little Alice game with 8-bit soul, it has some issues of readability and repetitiveness, needs a bit of story as well and maybe some omake to earn and a goal to work towards (I'm guessing just not in the demo?). I don't know what will be in the full game but I'd pump up the juice more to break the monotony, maybe have rooms with more enemies or traps, maybe more variety of room setups, big bosses zelda-style?, any secrets to find?, maybe a different character to unlock etc

Even if you used all prebuilt tech and assets only to remove the need for any artists or engineers, Half-Life still had ~10 level designers making all that content.

>>538356071
Half-Life 2 involved making the Source engine and ultimately had a team of 60-80. For Half-Life and its team of ~20, they just modified the Quake engine (while also having Quake 2 source code for reference) to add features they wanted (mostly 16-bit color and skeletal animations).

I finally beat it, it's crazy how broken the balance is if you don't find the right books. I got to round 7 first with the book that returns all your played pieces immediately, then I used:

>0.2x for every multi letter piece
>4x the longest word
>raven: copy the first book
>ulysses
>turn every vowel into a multi letter piece

This build is so broken I beat round 8 in two turns with 2500 points. How good you do in this game is complete luck since most of the items are useless while a few are OP.

I meant I struggled with whether I want to have them or not
I'm sort of letting chatgpt guide while also guiding it so I'm a little out of my element, haven't ever programmed with LLM help before. It kind of sucks and I hate it, but it's nice too.
Recently I just changed things around to do this "envelope normalizer" which seems like "tokenization" maybe? Standardizing commands into a dict form like { "op": "MOVE", "actor": "player", ...} so I have "aliases": {"move", "m"} too. But I'm not going to do travel/journey/meander/walk/go/go to/ ...
If that's not what you meant by parsing with tokenization, explain if you'd like.

Learning with an LLM is such a double-edged sword though, I never feel like what I write is truly mine and have to spend a lot longer refamiliarizing myself after a day or two, than I have had to in the past, with coding on my own.

>>538343695
a better alternative is to not use those tiny buttons and icons that you're using, look how balatro does, the cards are massive (if you know what I mean) look how much space are you wasting with nothing in the bottom left and all those useless buttons at the top that you won't use 95% of the time
a drag and drop would be the most intuitive one because when making words you don't always start from the beginning

Tokenization in this context is just breaking up a sentence into separate words and then attaching meaning to each word. Text games use imperative sentences so you don't have to do something too fancy. We aren't writing a compiler.

Most cases should be
"verb then noun"
or
"verb/noun"

>Recently I just changed things around to do this "envelope normalizer" which seems like "tokenization" maybe? Standardizing commands into a dict form like { "op": "MOVE", "actor": "player", ...} so I have "aliases": {"move", "m"} too.

Amongus, Vampire: The Masquerade, and Psychonauts, to name a few. They're all famous now but they weren't on release. Among Us took 2 years sitting on the steam store. Vampire took many years because of HL2 overshadowing it. Psychonauts wasn't really a huge success on release and it took time for a cult following to bring it up to what it is now. There's probably even better examples but succeeding well after release isn't exactly uncommon in *any* artistic department including music, paintings, movies, etc and those usually have proper marketing.

Also to add to what I said here >>538363441
I think you're confusing the idea or sentiment that time or the right eyes could make a bad game good but that's not what's really being argued here. If your game is just objectively bad by all metrics it's just going to be bad forever. There is some objective truth in what makes a game some what good.

NTA, but pre-Steam games aren't relevant to a discussion about modern day algorithmic visibility. As for Among Us, it didn't take 2 years to hit a reasonable level of visibility. It had a fair high daily CCU within a year, and wouldn't have been able to capitalize on the peak covid spike if it didn't already have thousands of daily players beforehand.

Recettear clone in which the sell and buy is done exactly like Recettear or is the customer sprite going to the display table, grabbing the item and bringing it to the counter where they wait for you to initiate the sell/buy better? The second one takes longer but it's more interactive.
The actual haggling would be done like Recettear in either way

Okay, I take it back. Still, the point that was made still stands. It might not have been a gigaflop but it was still a fairly "obscure" indie game. Whether it deserved it's playercount later or not is a different matter, point being is that games CAN and DO get overlooked a lot of the time

>1k CCU is still a fairly "obscure" indie game
Most devs here would kill for those kind of numbers. How many /agdg/ games have ever gotten past 1k? Like 5? 1k CCU ranks you at around the top 500 of ALL Steam games at any moment, or at around the top 0.1% of all games on Steam.
>>
>>538373625
By normalfag standards, it was obscure. Hell even on /v/ 1-5k CCU is considered "low playercounts", just so you have some perspective. This is why Amongus is so divise when it comes to game popularity and recognition.
>>
>>538373625
Also it's worth keeping in mind that Amongus is a multiplayer game, and CCU matters more for multiplayer games than it does for singleplayer games. Most aggies make SP games, so realistically CCU matters less for them.
>>
>>538373897
>listening to /v/ opinions
You're completely brainrotted, and you're NGMI. Leave for >>>/v/ and never come back.

>>538374062
CCU is strongly correlated with total playtime between all users and total playtime is one of the main metrics the Steam algorithm uses to determine how much visibility to give a game. Yes, CCU and playtime still matters for single player games.
>>
>>538362539
False. You don't need millions of dollars for advertising if you're willing to design your game for a verified audience and spend the necessary time building up support before release. Even if you want to make a niche game based purely on your individual passion, you'll still be able to build up a community of supporters given enough time and effort, assuming the game isn't absolute garbage.
All you really need is 50-100 positive reviews for bigger content creators to consider picking up your game and expanding its reach. If you don't believe in your game's ability to organically achieve at least 50 positive reviews, then why would you ever delude yourself into thinking your game would make money?
>>
>>538374497
>Yes, CCU and playtime still matters for single player games.
Did I say "it didn't matter at all"? No, I did not. Obviously, it does matter somewhat, but people here have figured out that the single most defining factor that your game's performance has is the amount of purchases near it's launch. CCU matters way less than that. As long as you can get thousands or millions of retards to buy your game at launch, without even playing it, Steam will still promote your game

yes, covid increased the demand for social games, but the fact that people still had fun playing it mean that, aside from your personal opinion, the game was good enough to be enjoyed

Launch doesn't matter much. Retards like you believe a game is dead if it didn't launch well, but that's clearly not the case. The only thing launch gives you is a relatively minor visibility boost in N&T. Meanwhile, the Steam algo looks at momentum. Valve has explicitly said this. That minor boost from N&T can help a game gain a little momentum, but there are still tons of other ways a game can gain momentum. So long as a game is fun and people continue to buy it, then a game can continue to gain momentum across several months or even several years as was the case with Among Us.
>>
>>538375329
>as was the case with Among Us.
retards need to stop taking games that got randomly lucky with viral success or extraordinary circumstances like covid lockdowns and using them to build a model of how steam works.

Assetlet here: what's a good way of doing things like cabinet faces where it's not central enough to justify a high tri count but also will also look bad if it's completely flat? I came across the idea of making a high tri model, baking the normal map from it, and then throwing it on a low tri model, but I don't know enough to say if that's retarded
>>
>>538374669
>the single most defining factor that your game's performance has is the amount of purchases near it's launch
this is correlation and not causation. marketing drives sales and marketing saturation peaks for most games at launch by design because that's when the product is first available for purchase. for games with little or no marketing budget, they may reach peak marketing saturation after launch due to influencer discovery or whatever so long as the new marketing wave eclipses the original.
