In the retro game era games were often bad. They had limitations caused by controls, graphics, processor speed, etc. Games weren't built on standard engines and all worked differently. These differences and quirks gave the games personality and the gameplay was fun because each game had its own unique way of interacting with it. These are still the funnest games to play. Here are three examples for you kids trying to catch the spirit of the old times:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We8T3wOvsF8
Pit-Fighter on the Game Boy:
This is not a good game. It is slow and hard to see and control. Or is it? The fun of this game is in the limitations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y7WLHsycv8
Road Runner's Death Valley Rally on SNES: The controls on this game are tough but the characters and scenes are really fun. It's enjoyable to be "in" this game. Who cares if the hitbox is bad?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpeIn9ebuzg
Tecmo Super Bowl on the SNES:
This is one of the greatest video games ever made and people still update the rosters every year. There is no realism or simulation here but it captures all of the fun parts of football that matter. You have just enough control and even when you master the game it is still fun to play while romping on the opponent.

i like arcade pit fighter, the genesis port is mostly faithful to it, but the snes version, whoever made that should be in max security prison with no chance for parole.
can't say i've tried any other ports, but there's really no reason not to play arc
would be cool to see a new one come out some day

Man, the Adventure Island episode made me think that game was hellish, I finally decided to give it a real try, and wasn't half as hard as I thought.

Arino isn't good at games, you can just beat most of them by brute forcing it for 13 hours.

It's mildly grindy in the same way that the Dragon Quest games it's based on are a bit grindy.

>>12481303
The game absolutely expects you to fight, and that's also why once you get strong enough, the local enemies start running away from you, because then you've seen the local monsters and your explicitly given the mercy of not having to waste your time further. A sort of soft railroading almost.

It really doesn't make you do it tons, hence the grind is actually mostly light, but there's a bit and you're expected to do it. There's the Sword Of Kings, which actually takes some time grinding, but that's extremely optional.
>>
>>12481047
I imagine it would probably have sold similarly in Europe as it did in the U.S, actually, due to similar circumstances and a lack of confidence in publishing it.

>>12481257
Yeah, and they had actually done the localizing and all, but then shelved it.

I forget when that was, but it may have been in the twilight years of the NES, which is where other games for the system would also see cancellation and shelving, because it wasn't economically viable enough. Either localizations of existing games, or games which didn't even make it to Japan's own market.
Notably, that Splatterhouse RPG which leaked a little while back, which was a completed (and actually pretty good) title, but which was quietly put away in the background without anyone ever knowing it existed, until recent years when Namco said "btw we did this back then."
>>
>>12482065
The one change here which I didn't like is the dad calls not coming in after playing a while without saving but there's a hack to re-enable it.
>>
>>12482827
Yep, it was supposed to release in 1990, but was cancelled due to the incoming arrival of the SNES and uncertainty about RPGs at the time. It's probably a good thing too, since it probably would have bombed due to similar reasons EarthBound did (they wanted to bundle it with a guide as well) and EarthBound would've been canned.
>>
wasn't the NES localization cancelled because it would have needed a pretty expensive MMC3 cart with a battery?

Personally, I remember me and a buddy controller swapping Lion King on Genesis and thinking that was batshit insane-o hard. The platforming on the giraffes and rhinos iirc was pure horror. Don’t think I had such frustration w a game until Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, which broke me. Lost two controllers to that game (I had an anger problem w video games for a long time but that and some bullshit in Mario Tennis 64 cost me several $$$ because of broken controllers due to rage, and yes it was extremely unhealthy now I just set the control down and do something else if I run into a rage inducing part of a game and return to it later w a cool head).

Feels are what you have on the inside, Anon. If I used "feels" to describe a game, then I would be describing a game that goes out of its way to try and evoke lots of emotions in you. Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 obviously aren't feels games. They're not sappy visual novels.

At least back when I got into DQ back in the early 00s, the one most of the fans agrees to be the holy masterpiece of the series was III.
Nowadays it seems that while still respected I see more people praising V, which is also a masterpiece on its own.

I played them in order and the original versions (with a patch for the NES ones to make it closer to the original Famicom version)

My ranking: 3>7>5>8>4>2>6>1

I like them all, extremely consistent in term of quality unlike final fantasy with some episodes that i love (7,8,9...) and others that i hate (FF12...)

You play this for literally 10 seconds and you can already tell it's irredeemable garbage. Everything about it just feels like utter shit.

Westerners (aside from Rare) were just so fucking bad at making any form of action game, platformer, or shooter.

>>

I've gotten the scary ISP letter. Not a big deal. Only happens if you're retarded like I was and pirated a $70 PC game the morning it released with no VPN or anything. Doesn't happen with anime and retro games.

Killer Instinct was 100% an arcade game. Mortal Kombat succeeded where KI didn't because they understood how to modify the game for home consoles and make something fun. Also the characters and balance were just better. Same with SF2. On consoles people mostly played against their friends constantly in 1v1 matches so balance and relative simplicity was key. There is a relatively limited number of people who want to spend hours and hours mastering obscure combos and shit.

Back to KI - the arcade machine was awesome and fun to play in the arcade. People who are like 22 years old now don't understand the old arcade experience, which is a fucking shame because it ruled.
>>
>>12472261
the blood and fatalities were cool novelties but what people really loved about mortal kombat was subzero freezing people and scorpion throwing the spearhook and raiden zapping lightning.

Both Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 popularizing the "lol Sonic's shitty friends" meme has guaranteed we are never ever ever getting anymore spinoffs starring anyone but Sonic.
>>
>>12481594
After the movies and Shadow Generations' good reception I don't think that's the case anymore.
>>
>>12481595
Shadow always gets special treatment. This is nothing special. Maybe when we see an Amy or Knuckles game I'll concede.
>>
>>12481594
Which is a shame, since there is no reason each of the side characters couldn't just be treated as their own nigga, like how Yoshi, Luigi and Wario all got their own unique franchise.

>Sonic doing whatever
>Shadow being Sonic but with guns/character action game elements or maybe spiritual successor to burning rangers gameplay
>Rogue the Bat stealth-heists
>Blaze the Cat (Sonic Rush 3-featuring Silver)
>Amy gets to be the star of "Sister Sonic", which plays similar to Popful Mail and her gameplay from the Sonic Advance series
>Knuckles 3D platformer/beat em up that focuses on his strength
>Tails Adventure 2 exploration based 2D game
>Chaotix 2 that goes back and makes the concept work and throwing in some more nigs with new abilities like Ray, Bean, Bark, Honey
>Fang/Nack game that is Shadow the Hedgehog, but 2D/Gunstar Heroes-ish
>Big the Cat is some kinda experimental jank like Billy Hatcher

I feel this way but for SMT Nocturne, because just focus on the superficial Revelations stuff

Back onto Zelda, I do find that interesting and would wanna hear more. Despite the traditional fantasy aesthetic and blonde elves and castles, Zelda always felt very Japanese in a way.

It saddens me that there are so many classics we can't talk about anymore because you never know if the person you're talking to actually played the game or some casualized cashgrab version designed for younger retards and made god knows how many years after the fact.
They say that "remakes don't replace the originals" but remakes and shitty ports certainly change a game's perception and poison the discussion.

So from now there needs to be a new rule, if you played some later ports (picrel is only a sample of those examples), you should put an * at the start of your post and say so, that way everyone will know your opinion can be discarded. I mean, pretending that you know all about Final Fantasy 1 and 2 because you only played Dawn of Souls is like claiming you read the Dracula novel because you watched the Coppola movie, and even that comparison isn't fair because that movie is actually good.

The worse thing is when these people, confronted by these facts, start to cope like "who cares these games were never hard" (yeah you'd certainly think so if you only played the casualized garbage version) or start to insult the people who played the originals. Because it's not enough to have a taste for shit, everyone else must eat it too and good taste must be erased in the process.

>The FF Anthology on PS is dogshit or so I've heard
The sound effects are off, you will notice immediately, it takes a while to get used to. Aside from that it's fine.
I can't remember anything wrong with FF5 besides the poorly translated enemies, and sometimes battles felt laggy, almost like it would freeze for a second when trying to move the cursor or make an input. Could've just been the disc, I dunno, never seen anyone else mention it.
>>
>>12478164
I had been super excited to finally play FFV and then it was so buggy and clunky it felt like pulling teeth. Walk a couple steps, the whole game freezes for several seconds then a battle loads, every button press feels like it has delay, animations chug at what seems like 5fps. Finally win, black screen for several seconds while it loads the over world again. Walk a couple steps, the process repeats. It was so fucking bad.
