Hello again anons, welcome back for volume 10 of Moto Hagio's A Savage God Reigns. Ian makes the trip to Boston following revelations of Greg's guilt, but Jeremy is not to keen to see him. Will he have any hope of bringing him around? The works of Hagio and her contemporaries ("the '49ers") represented an experimental new direction in girls' and women's manga in terms of both content and style. I hope some anons who might be unfamiliar with these mangaka and their works, or who might generally avoid girls' comics or older manga altogether, will consider reading along and trying something new. You might be surprised. For those who would like to catch up and join in, here are the previous threads:Vol. 1: >>268448441Vol. 2: >>268501695Vol. 3: >>268540638Vol. 4: >>268581029Vol. 5: >>268615427Vol. 6: >>268647910Vol. 7: >>268683142Vol. 8: >>268721319Vol. 9: >>268755228For the Japanese-speaking anons among us: tinyurl dot com slash 4wj859ppLet's get right back at it.

Heads up that I have to go out, so leaving the post bot running. Hoping nothing goes awry.

>>268783659Lindon is in too deep.
I read the raws for this one pretty recently so I'm jumping on some corrections for pages I remember being wrong off the top of my head before I do the full skim.>>268783659The ellipses (or asterisks now that I look at them more closely) were originally dialogue that wasn't translated.Ian: You know more than I do.Lindon: That's why I can't... Because I know it will fail.>>268783929"I wonder if he's suffered a long time" should be "Will it take a long time?" and "He's had so many things happen" should be "That also depends...">>268783952And this was a snore, not a sigh.>>268784520"And then he'll become irritable (etc.)" should be "So I get irritated and end up gorging myself." It seems to be someone with a binge-eating disorder."You, Valentine's already gone." should be "You could never be a ballerina." My best guess for what happened is they misread ballerina as Valentine or something.

>>268782725The first time I visited Hampstead Heath in northern London I was surprised. It was just a large forest and grassland lying on a hill, and it feels like you're in an empty field. It's in a different style from other parks like Hyde Park and Regent's Park. When you're living in the city and suddenly go to an open field, it feels like your heart is set free for the woods of nature.
>>268785344Echos of Lance.
>>268785391I can't hold this one against Jeremy much because he's coming off a huge high and hadn't gotten very far in the recovery process yet, but Ian really should have known better.
>>268784474There is literally no point making him go to therapy if he's not going to talk about any of the things he needs a therapist for. I can't believe anyone involved thinks this is helping.

>>268785471Thanks, OP. This was largely a transitional volume with a lot of character introductions and setup that saved most of the drama for the end. Jeremy's not the only one with problems, Ian is quite a mess right now.

>>268784870Ian's perceptiveness works with women. He can identify a BDP hoe at 30 paces.
>>268784921Man it is so fucked up that Jeremy gets easily embarrassed by light PDA between an actual couple but will suck a dude's dick within 5 minutes of meeting him if he thinks its part of a trade.

>>268785471Thanks OPIan rapes but he saves. He saves, but he rapes.
>>268792828I guess that's one more thing than Greg did
>>268783649I'm nearly convinced at some point Hagio wrote Lindon to be in love with Ian but eventually decided to just cut it or leave it in the background.Might explain why the "voice of reason" is now thinking it's a good thing to let the teenage drug addicted male prostitute to his own device if it can make things easier for his beloved Ian.
>>268783831Octavian hating strangers but purring happily in Ian’s arms is fucking adorable.
>>268790044Most BL mangas ( Dont know if you could call this one BL tho ) hardly acknowledge sexuality at all, everyone is gay if the guys are handsome enough.
>>268793083He's definitely an Ian-centric character for sure. Most readers are already going to be on Jeremy's side because they've seen his journey from the beginning and know every little detail, so Lindon serves a purpose as an advocate for Ian to counterbalance that, because he's kind of biting off more than he can chew with this whole situation.
>>268785426>>268785443>>268785459Was it rape?
>>268793306it was going to be. it got kind of muddied up by ian quitting and then jer egging him on, but you could maybe make the argument that the inebriation puts it back in that category

>>268793306Unwise and unhealthy, with the blame squarely on Ian, but not rape.
>>268784608Very BPD.
>>268796561>>268784630So she splits, which fits into that diagnosis. It definitely feels like Moto came up with this whole therapy group scenario so she could showcase more odd characters embodying certain interesting diagnoses she read about in her research.
>>268784780Claire is concentrated essence of wine mom
>>268786409>>268784608You know, I didn't realise this until you pointed it out, but my new theory is that this particular layout is lifted directly from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet film. You can find the fishtank scene on Youtube, it's pretty striking. According to Wikipedia this volume (v10) came out in September 1997, and the film was released in Japan in April 1997, so I actually think there's a very strong case. (I can't find exact dates on when this particular chapter was released given I don't know where each chapter starts and ends.)

>>268796649Marjorie's suicidal ideation is also written to be one of the things about her that resembles Sandra imo, but we'll get more into that later.
>>268788119this may be the best Octavian in the volume
>>268783903Posting ancient edit.
>>268796649These last few volumes are like a KIDS tier, "here are a bunch of fucked up and traumatized children trying to live".
>>268801026i gotta say, one of those "kids" does not look like a kid

>>268792804Ian still thinks he's straight because he can't comprehend what bi is. The angry homolust is a new thing for him but give him time to realize it
>>268804854Yeah, Ian can understand 'fooling around' with another boy as a kid, but in his mind you're either gay forever, or straight.

>>268783481>>268783497Cass's shirt is really good.
>>268783208>>268783306I like that this series doesn't pull punches when depicting how drugs, trauma, and mental illness will fuck up you and your relationships. There's such a stigma around these things that a lot of media attempting to depict it frequently overcompensates in the other direction and only shows the sympathetic side of the sufferer, but it ends up falling short of the reality which I feel is a disservice to the people struggling with their inner demons and ironically ends up contributing to the stigma of there being good or bad victims.
>>268783996It's hard being an unwanted child. It's actually surprising Matt isn't a lot more fucked up than he is.
>>268784443It's not that flashy or exciting as far as paneling goes but I like the top two panels here. The lack of directional orientation as if the drugs are making him float in space, lost in his own thoughts, and the use of black to blot out everything but their faces makes the exchange feel both intimate and suffocating. The ceiling blending into their conversations as it goes on is a nice trippy effect.
>>268785057>>268785070>>268785084She's laying it on thick for the inevitable cheating.

More corrections, continuing from >>268786491>>268782979Bottom left. "Things you were made to do" is more like things that were done to you/what happened to you.>>268783196Top right panel. "Because he dies" should be "Because he's going to die.">>268783423The first "Do you hate me?" should be "Do you resent me?" I would normally let this pass but it was two different words they translated as if it was the same.>>268783583"Bella" was "Bear-chan." Calling it something cutesy like Mr. Bear would work.>>268783612Bottom left panel. "Everyone at Rin Forest (etc.)" should be "You are returning to Rin Forest tomorrow, correct? I will pass that information along.">>268783831They removed a heart by Octavian's purring, unforgivable.>>268783846First panel, "I can see" is more like arrived, and "Marris" should be "Alice.">>268783863Third panel. Matt's "yeah" is actually "nah">>268783903Bottom right. Jeremy's "yeah" should be "nope" and Natasha's "that" is supposed to be her chiding Matt. In the next panel, Ian's "Nothing happened." Should be "It's nothing." He's trying to play it cool.>>268783915There's missing text in the top right corner that was a continuation of the dialogue at the end of the previous page. The basic gist is that he's shaken up that the sound of water gave him flashbacks (presumably to when Jeremy jumped in the lake).>>268784010It's not exactly incorrect and I try not to nitpick like this but I would have translated "you will give up on them" as "you will have to let go"I'm still skimming but this one was getting pretty long.
>>268810891Ian wasn't exactly faithful
>>268814902Thats just part of showing how screwed he is. He still blushes when a couple kisses by him or lovey-doveys each other, but he'll suck an obese guy's dick for drug money.
>>268784676Third panel, the blank dialogue was Marjorie expressing indignation. Something like "what the heck" or "how dare you.">>268784709Second to last panel, "What a nice place" should be "That's good." Seems they mixed up こと and とこ>>268784780Professor Barry should be Father Barry since he's some kind of clergyman. This applies to here too >>268784857 where "he's the professor's son" should be something like "he's the son of a priest">>268784989"Trophy" was "prey." I'm only correcting this one because it's a metaphor that comes up again.
>>268785100The blank dialogue bubble was just his partner moaning. In the bottom right, there are 3 bits of missing text on the white part of the background, "drugs" "prostitution" "with Pansy">>268785204The blank shout bubble was Pansy yelping.>>268785268Bottom right, "What kind of person" should be "How many people">>268785443I know enough to notice the translator's mistakes while reading but I'm still not fluent so I honestly can't tell what the nuance of Ian's line is supposed to be here. Any raw readers around? He says いったな…That's all I have for this volume. There were a few more I could have done but they weren't that important.
>>268783471What influenced this change of heart exactly? It couldn't have been the dream
>>268819262Pretty sure it was. My memory is foggy but I think later on he says he went so he could receive punishment. Where better to receive it than where it happened at the hands of the other person most affected by it? Of course I could be misremembering.
