I wonder if this is also riffing on Astro City along with the usual superhero pastiches. Whether it's preachy or not may be debatable. It definitely doesn't shy away from the race stuff. As far as adult capeshit stories with social commentary go I thought the writer managed to bring it all together by the end. I'll check out the sequel later.

The Mario movies are infinitely better at actually channeling the video games. The worlds are vibrant, whimsical, and cartoonish, with the characters navigating them in the same way. Visually, it's undoubtedly the world of Mario, even with a lot of things being somewhat recontextualized. You don't get that with Sonic. They don't take place on not just Earth, but "our" Earth--and even when Eggman is sent to Mushroom Hill, it's distinctively an actual planet instead of a boing sproingy zone. The cast is comprised of people that are limited to a real human's physicality, so even crazy scenes like the gravity room can't go too nutty. They're also, notably, not Sonic characters, and they don't act like them. Hell, Eggman is all of these things. He's not even really bald until the second one, and not fat and in his costume until the third one, and it's still a "modernized" or "real life" variation of his suit. He doesn't even act like Eggman the entire time.But you know what Eggman is? He's Jim Carrey. Acting his butt off, in a movie that does infinitely better than Mario at proper pacing, story, and character arcs, as the Mario movies have often so far been criticized as feeling more like a collection of trailer moments and shorts. As such, it's far better received as a movie, and de facto gets viewed as a better vidya movie.The question is, is that fair. Should a video game's quality be metered based on how much it channels a video game, or just how it takes the material and transforms it into a movie, even if it's in no proper way an adaptation of that material.

When it comes to adapting a story I don't think there's that much difference between video games and any other medium: I think stronger movies have been made from much flimsier material. The bigger problem is that, unlike comic book movies, video game movies are almost always written by fans, overseen b obsessive corpos, and pulled from a single, unchanging canon. It all comes down to how much of a shit the writers give.

I've got one that isn't too far away. Like a ten minute drive in the downtown area. About one third the floor space is actually comic books with the rest being tabletop games, various merch, and so on. I don't really talk to anyone there though and rarely do anything beyond pick up orders, so I don't know if it is good or bad.
