I don't know if she was just a character that Batiuk lost interest in or just a sort of red herring to fill the gap until he got around to putting who he really wanted in that position (take a guess) because she doesn't really disappear, she gets an actual reason for exiting and even gets what amounts to a small epilogue later on. She's not the most entertaining character but I like her.
