READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

whats with all the negative sentiment on older windows versions?
>don't use xp, look at this video, the minute he connects to the Internet he's already got a virus!!!!!!!
that isn't even remotely true and in that video he clearly states that he turned off the firewall and purposefully opened up a backdoor to his computer
ive literally been using Windows 7 since its launch and my computer still works perfectly fine

It's really not... I'm going Threadripper on my next build for more flexibility (cores, PCIE lanes, etc). Consumer hardware has plateaued and they're really not gonna give us more than a few little speedups going forward.

If you just browse and do your homework my PC would be more than enough, but when it comes to total compute it's falling behind fast... hell, even my high-end 4090 feels like the minimum spec these days with new games running like ass without DLSS maxed out (~240p to 4K).

The truer point is that we have pretty good games that run on mid tier hardware from current year

most games arent some path tracing only showcases of future tech, and if they're visually mediocre and arent made on unreal 5 they run at 60fps at 1440p on kinda shit hardware using dlss

FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex

>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

>What version should I install?

>microsoft has been suddenly fighting against "illegal" activation methods
microsoft has been retiring many outdated components and one of those components was exploited by outdated offline activation method.
did microsoft retire it only because of activation exploit? nobody knows but most likely not.
>>
>>107850957
>send the ID of the computer plus its current installed edition to MS's activation servers and gets them to add the ID to the activation server no strings attached
Yeah but I'm talking about a fresh laptop here, no prior activations. So isn't it quite obvious that microsoft could just start blocking new registrations on their servers? Up until this point I've assumed they simply don't care and wouldn't want to cause angry hordes by blocking it.
>>
>>107850988
It doesn't matter if the laptop is fresh or not, it'll activate fine all the same.
>>
>>107851013
It won't if microsoft changes their servers and decides to block unauthorized hardware ID activations.
>>
>>107851026
I mean if you could always just use the TSforge method instead if you wanted to.

It's speakers. It's paper/kevlar cone and a magnet. In actives there might be the need to replace capacitors but that's about it. I use B&W speakers from 1997 and it's still pretty good.

I wonder if that explains the mass exodus of administrative staff from Apple.
I would honestly prefer Siri to just stay dumb desu. Google is inevitably going to try and get more data out of people's phones and I don't really believe anything Apple will say about their privacy implementations.
>>
>>107849663
What I don't understand is how Apple fell behind like this. Apple was the one who came out with Siri which everyone at the time look at as something that would eventually progress into what we have now with conversational AI and agentic AI. Then they just did next to nothing with it, allowed Google to come in and surpass it with Google Assistant, allowed Bixby to even show some usefulness in comparison and now Siri is going to be powered by the Gemini models because they dropped the ball that hard. Was Steve Jobs really that much better than Tim Cook at that when he passed basically all progress and vision at Apple stopped and they just focused on maximizing their existing lineups?
>>
>>107849663
can you actually imagine working for Apple though? I literally don't know anyone who would stoop that low. It's probably the shittiest big tech company to work for, unless you're some bleeding-edge hardware-only designer cuck.
>>
>>107850906
because Apple treats their wage cattle like shit. again, who the fuck wants to work for Apple? If you're in the general area and so normal faggot coded you can go into the giant anus office building a day and zone out, maybe it's tolerable.
>>

People never use voice assistants other than to turn on the flashlight in the dark.

Zoomer here. I heard from my teacher today that phones used to have a slot like the sim card one where you could put in those digital camera memory sd cards in it. Why did no one complain when this happened?
