Sorry if this is a dumb question. I am on Mint right now, if I switch to Pop OS, will my Steam saves work on Pop OS? Also, how's COSMIC? Ready for gayming?

they will be deleted when you install a new OS*

Because you will overwrite your disk when you install a new OS.

That is unless you install your new OS on a different partition, but that would make you have both, and I'm guessing you want to switch and not waste the disk space on the old OS?
>>
>>107880638
>this is linux, most likely drivers will not work
driver problems are far rarer on linux than on windows because usually they're just there in your kernel to begin with.

the only real problems arise when you buy some bleeding edge laptop with some PCI cards whose drivers aren't in the mainline kernels of stable release OS's yet (because the device didn't exist then). most people never see this
>>
>>107882629
>older shit
on linux, old hardware is almost always supported out of the box. it's the new proprietary shit that sometimes doesn't have drivers yet, but nowadays most OEMs release linux drivers too
>>
>>107880620
switch to Bazzite anon, enhanced security by default and literally made for gayming. atomic shit is also easy to handle and convy, additionally it's based on Fedora and therefore much more advanced when it comes to Linux development in general
>>
>>107882627
I am not even on linux. I ran that mint installation inside a VM as well. My main OS is 10 ltsc. One of my major problems with linux is that the entire migration to Wayland, which is still a half-baked product, is done way too fast and way too aggressively. X is far from being perfect but at least it worked well (or at least as good as a linux software can), unlike Wayland, and I am pretty sure that major linux distros abandoning x completely so fast will drive people away from this hobby OS.

remember, the only reason why wayland exists is to support transparent terminals, wobbly windows, and ui cubes
ALL of which useless features that let people rice out their distro before getting turned off after 5 minutes because of how annoying they are
"but x11 isn't MoDeRn!" is not a compelling reason to replace reliable software
>>

It can be made to work. But it's trash technically (it's competing on sloppiness with microslop at this point). Really, windows and mac (even hobby OSes) are ahead in matter of a well designed display server (in terms of security, future proof, etc.). But loonix users don't care about using feces, so the real price is incompatibility. And gnome and wayland devs are basically sabotaging that end. So we end as we are, there's no "wayland", porting to kde doesn't mean compatibility on gnome or wlroots (and vice-versa). The libs like SDL, GTK, QT usually create A HELL LOT of heuristics to TRY AND GUESS what "wayland" means on your system (versioning, protocol, portal).

I'm not claiming any moral superiority, insofar I was not expressing a value judgement, I didn't say "what I do is FINE, what they do is BAD", mine was a descriptive comparison; what I was actually doing was exposing your bias. If you actually just disliked "entitled parasites", (You) would have criticised those who openly mentioned scrapping keys. (You) actually don't dislike parasites, (You) just dislike me. Anything I do that (You) can frame as "wrong" triggers you.

And I probably wasted way too much on this, as probably most regulars already know that (You) are an hypocrite with fairly serious mental issues.

Interesting idea but yeah I think I want a more simple approach. OmniOS in a VM which will "own" the storage HDDs. I am eyeing OmniOS as my server os, for no other reason than I am just curious about illumos and wish to give it a go and from the documentation I've read I figure this vs BSD won't give me a huge difference for my needs (standard SMB NAS), so I opt to choose an OS i've never encountered before. Although back in my sysadmin days I did work with a few solaris machines. I actually managed to migrate 700ish websites off of an old, BEEFY ass solaris machine (not sure what version, but I remember it was a pre-Oracle one). That was fun, so Solaris-like it is.

I will also host my own git for shits and giggles, run a Pihole and also run a nethack server for my autistic friends, complete with full bones stuff etc.

Sorry for the blog.

i was thinking more along the lines me being able to read my senior programmer's code at my first job and instantly spot bugs that seemed really obvious to me, because i would run the logic in my head and feel genuine discomfort when i "feel" there's an uncovered edge case, an inconsistency or some other bad interaction with another system. meanwhile my senior is oblivious but then again he could write algorithms and stuff that i could not wrap my mind around at all
