READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Glad you liked it. It also stuck with me for years after I read it and made me reevaluate how I see myself in relation to others. I have a feeling that there’s something universally relatable to in that story, and I suspect others would be able to see aspects of themselves in the main character as well. We all use other’s impressions of ourselves to help us define who we are. We all manipulate others to a certain extent. It can be terrifying to admit we define ourselves in part with false impressions we’ve given to others! I think the only way to move past that is to acknowledge and accept it while cultivating a concept of self less reliant on these impressions. Having several ego death experiences on acid and learning about attachments in relation to anatta were particularly helpful in this regard. It’s not something I feel dread around anymore though. Hope you enjoy finishing Infinite Jest! Maybe look into “I Am a Strange Loop” by Douglas Hofstadter next.

nothing has really changed, the chinks figured out a way to bypass the fees by just shipping items in bulk instead of individual packages.
prices have genuinely barely been impacted.
>>107644029
all computer fans are chinkshit already, it's a completely globalized product.
your best bet is refurbished ones direct from brands on ebay or something.
i have had good results from buying "damaged" water coolers and just taking the fans, they are usually completely unused and the radiators were just damaged in shipping. sometimes it's just completely cosmetic and you can get a full AIO water cooler for peanuts.

I want a "smart" thermostat, but seems like they all are rather dumb, having their "smarts" in the cloud. And fuck that shit.
Does Chang offer a smart thermostat that works offline? I just wanna program some stuff like
>heat up to 23° from 0600 to 0700
>stay at 18° from 0700 to 1700
>heat up to 24° from 1700 to 2200
>cool down to 16° from 2200 to 0600
and a
>gimme full power nao!!!
button.
Wouldn't mind doing that shit with a d-pad on the thermostat or per app and bluetooth, if it's an open standard and I could use some FOSS app on my PC, should the phone app stop being supported.

They have no reason to "pick up" NVIDIA in the first place with that attitude. Why not support Nouveau and Nvk in Mesa and leave everything else to the AUR?

Obviously, there is someone at Arch maintaining this crap. It's a conscious decision to not package the legacy driver branch.
>>
>>107646415
Arch regularly doesn't do legacy branches unless they have a very good reason for it.
When you chose Arch, you wanted to be close to upstream. This is what you get, Nvidia is a ticking time bomb that can drop support for your gpu with each release.
>>
>>107646456
Hardware support is a good reason to package it, even if it's not made part of the Nvidia package group (but still conflicts) so people with modern hardware don't accidentally install it and yes, to be clear this mess is absolutely 100% NVIDIA's fault and you shouldn't buy their hardware if you care about having long-term support.

>>107646370

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet + the TrackPoint
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support

I can't figure out what makes ThinkPad fans work different between Linux and Windows. On Windows 11 my P16s seems to turn them off under no load which is not the case on any distribution I've tested so far. Am I missing a driver or something? Are they supposed to be controlled from user space (can't see any fan curves in the BIOS)?

When you step back, look around, and realize that it's literally only the most unintelligent troglodytes who are anti-"AI", then you begin to easily see how their hatred derives entirely from their utter inability to think for themselves enough to be able to actually use it effectively. They are NPCs who are expecting the technology to think for themselves, and get mad when it doesn't. They are stuck with defaults because they lack imagination enough to customize.

How does Google track my Youtube watch history across devices that aren't signed in, have never been on the same network, or have never been within a mile of each other?

At home, I have my "bed phone", an old no-sim android with 99% of features disabled used almost exclusively to fall asleep listening to YT videos using Brave. The device never leaves home and has never signed into YT.
My daily driver phone is on graphene with everything disabled, including mobile data, used exclusively for phone calls. paid VPN turned on 24/7 just in case.

Often I'll visit a friend and watch Youtube on TV through their Roku box using the guest account. The types of videos I watch at their house are completely different topics than what I watch at home. I have never connected my phone to their network.
When I go home, the videos I watched on my friend's Roku guest account will immediately start showing up on my no-sim, home-only, signed-out phone. What the fuck?
I also have a general use hardwired linux box at home, 24/7 vpn+different privacy browser, only rarely watch maybe 1-2 YT vids a week about a specialty topic. Those videos will also start showing up in the algorithm on my no-sim home phone.
>>

All current AIs get dumber the longer they run, it’s inherit to the way most of them work (by token prediction), since they have to input all the previous token before outputting single new token.
