READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Only buy recertified drives.
>>
>>107637123
Depends. How long is the warranty? How much is it? If it has a short warranty then how much is it to replace?

I personally stopped buying them from. They jacked up the prices so much after they started sponsoring youtubers. Why buy from them when if I spend $50 more I can get a NEW drive with a longer warranty than what they can provide.
If you can get a deal where you can save 50% off compared to a new drive then I would go for it, but not $50.

My 2 cents:
Catalog search does not filter, it's just Ctrl+F
You can sort bookmarks in the bookmarks menu but not in the bookmarks swipe tab
Scrollbar is ugly and thick
Pic attachment is not I'm the reply area but it's on the opposite side of the screen
In the bookmarks tab, what's the difference between "unbookmark" and "delete"?
You can't swipe bookmarks away to unbookmark

Pls fix

>in most regular setups, requires having 2 video cards.
In this economy? No way. I am a paypig and most Steam stuff I've bothered with so far has either just werked or been a quick Google from fixing, I'm asking more generally. My biggest motivation is getting a program that controls a Bluetooth device and plays videos working. It's not a game, but I do want to bind it to input from a vidya controller anyway. There is also a visual novel I'd like to finish which probably is Proton/Bottles material.

Really, I think what I'm looking for is a good tutorial on how this stuff works so I can get my hands dirty and then be able to make sense of the official documentation once I have some semblance of an idea what the actual fuck they're trying to tell me. There are probably a million entries on YouTube, I'm just looking for a quality video or post or something that can get an absolute amateur up and walking if not running.

Problem is that there is no 123 documentation. Most youtubers are slop fishing for easy views.

>Library devs introducing breaking changes all the fucking time, thus creating new dependency hells with every release and making it necessary to recompile everything, which increases the maintenance burden for every piece of software exponentially.
Not my problem. I just install Debian or Ubuntu and everything just works. Security patches arrive on my machine and I don't have to think about compatibility or anything like that.
>Software maintainers who cannot provide sane defaults because of their poor taste and lack of common sense, but then also refuse to let others improve on their silly decisions. This leads to so many cumulative hours wasted on fiddling with configuration options.
Doesn't take much effort to create a new config file. Also you can put your dotfiles in a Git repo and back it up however you want (GitHub, GitLab, etc). On a new machine you just clone the repo and copy the contents into your home directory.

I try to write things down and memorize them. I would start by writing about my experience in the field, the technologies I am most comfortable with, or my studies.

The idea is that, when the day comes, you don't read what you've written, but rather have a strong foundation in the ideas you want to communicate with the correct wording.
