Yes, I know this is the place where everybody loves to rice and have complete control over their system, but unlike some people who use Linux, I actually have a job and things I need to do.I have been daily driving Linux, and it is very good, but I was wondering if it is possible to still have a good understanding of Linux systems on what some may call a “normie” distro like Ubuntu. Do I really need to use something like Arch or Gentoo to learn Linux? And if I do use Arch or Gentoo, am I even really learning Linux? It kind of seems I would learn more about the package manager and whatever other stuff it uses instead of actually learning Linux systems.
>>108502677it is all the fucking same.
>>108502677I think you should start with an easy distribution but don't get accustomed to the affordances it offers to make things easier. Always ask if there's a terminal-based way you can do X or configure Y, etc. If I'd started on SuSE and used yast for everything, I'd have never had the career I managed by going Slackware - RedHat - Mandrake - Debian. Last thing you want to do is start in Arch and have no fucking idea where to start. Try Fedora or openSUSE, but make a point of removing the training wheels. Also Ubuntu is cancer. Specifically snaps are a kind of tumor.

>>108502723>>108502819This. Absolutely this. I learned my way with Slackware in 1999. I don't use it anymore, but it helped me greatly.>>108502947Better for what? I haven't tried Gentoo. I can recommend Void, which I'm currently using in my home server, if you want something a bit easier to install and keep updated. I think you don't sneed a' hard 'distro to learn Linux, but something like Slackware certainly would help in grasping some concepts.
>>108502677You should be thinking of what you want to accomplish on your machine instead of becoming an expert on fucking with it. The point of Linux is not to be difficult to use or master regardless of what 'power users' say. No one uses windows because it's harder to use. The Linux community is infested with elitists who do nothing productive with a computer. Keep using Ubuntu and be productive with it. If it can't do what you need it to, then consider another option.

I may be late to the party on this but my alphoomer nephew just showed me a locked thread of the Scratch Director of Technology losing his cool at 10 year olds and and being moderated by his own moderation team due to his "impolite" remarks while arguing over TOS changes that trains AI on user projects and adds an AI assistant. I guess not all gen alphababies got oneshotted by LLMs. Where's his PR guy to tell him a grown man throwing redditisms like "ad hominem" and "false narrative" at users he acknowledges in the same thread are statistically 80% under the age of 12 comes across incredibly retarded and tactless?

If Microsoft has ANY SENSE, they build on the success of the .NET/C# team.Develop a WinForms successor that is cross platform, Windows/Mac/Linux. Exportable to the web as well kind of like Avalonia. Simple drag and drop style native UI design with the ability to tweak and refine in the code. Make this a part of the transition to native UI.This shit would do numbers and wreck the current landscape. Everyone is dead fucking tired of working on front end sloppo for even the smallest apps and internal tools. The OG WinForms was a gateway drug for getting into C# itself because it was so easy and streamlined to work with for any kind of basic app.

Everything after 7 was shit.10 is often considered "good" simply because it's a better experience than 8/8.1, but still worse than 7 in every way other than better compatibility with modern hardware and software.I'd argue even Vista is overall better than 10 and the only reason Vista is shat on is "poor" compatibility because people were trying to run it on their ancient XP toasters. 7 was the only Windows after XP that MS improved in all sectors: compatibility, performance, features and experience. Everything else after if drops the ball in at least two of those areas.
