There's always issues. Look at the total shitshow that is AWS. You have to back things up on AWS as well. Google Cloud lost all the data of some Australian investment fund a few years ago.

Anyways, I've never had any issues using Hetzner for many years now.

NAS Case Guide. Feel free to add to it:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server/Case_guide

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualisation. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavour of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

Who else made the double-switch? Storage Spaces is comfy and flexible for a NAS, but a polished Linux distro like Ubuntu is much comfier for a daily driver than the shitshow that is Windows 11.
>>
>want to make my main NAS all-SSD
Is there any point in buying SATA SSDs for NASes any more? The form factor suits my current hardware, but going forward is it just going to get more and more awkard when it comes to slots etc, like the hardware just won't be built to accommodate several SATA data disks? Like everything will be built with multiple NVMe disks in mind, whether an off the shelf Synology type solution, or motherboards and cases for custom builds?

>I run my docker containers in a dedicated docker VM (as recommended) which is a bit less efficient for resource and energy usage
There's nothing wrong with running docker inside an LXC. The VM recommendation is a degree of paranoia that isn't really warranted. LXCs are well tested to be hardened at this point. A hostile docker image would first need to break out of the docker container, then break out of either the LXC or VM environment. That is non trivial even if the LXC is privileged. For a mission critical enterprise system, sure keep the tinfoil hat on. For your jellyfin and sysadmin LARP containers. Fuck it, who cares.

Note that multiple LXCs can use the igpu concurrently. You also get better performance because you reduce memcopy operations if you're mounting directories for your VMS to NFS into. The host system will load the data, cache it in ram, and then present it to the guest system. That doesn't matter for a jellyfin server, but if you're doing something that's relatively I/O intensive it can start bogging things down rather quickly.

Eric has failed us, he has literally one job, and that is to provide 25 puzzles, per year, on schedule. Now it's only a 12 day challenge, how can you even call that "advent" of code, which is supposed to count down to Christmas. I am outraged, and you should be too. What if Santa's elves just decided to stop making half the toys??? Ridiculous.

>Also, starting this year, there will be 12 days of puzzles each December.

>Why did the number of days per event change? It takes a ton of my free time every year to run Advent of Code, and building the puzzles accounts for the majority of that time. After keeping a consistent schedule for ten years(!), I needed a change. The puzzles still start on December 1st so that the day numbers make sense (Day 1 = Dec 1), and puzzles come out every day (ending mid-December).

Yes. Walking around town buying dirt cheap discs then sticking them in my PC is an experience I'll miss when it's gone. I've discovered a lot of cool but forgotten B-tier games I never would have played like this.
My main tower also has a dual hard drive hotswap bay, a multi card reader and USB expansion, and one of those cheap plastic drawers which I use to store thumb drives, SD cards, and USB cables. I hope everybody responsible for 5.25 inch bays going out of fashion dies very soon.

Thank you for being a free email service accepted by my university, bank, and just about everything else I've tried it on. I used up my only phone numbers on silly gmail account names.

I've even seen doctors use it for client interactions. I hope it continues getting more normal and doesn't blow up like some other 'private' email services.
>>
>>106996310
only dkim, spf and dmarc. but only for sending mails. stalwart automatically set them up for you, you only have to set the corresponding dns records. they're only certs and additional verification that tells other mail server that all mail coming from domain.com must come from a selected list of ips to prevent fraud.
>>
It's one of the rare email services that doesn't rely on another email service when signing up. No joke, you make a hotmail account and I couldn't fucking login to it without using the backup email address to accept MFA tokens. Fuck that noise.

Also yes, more people should self host email. It should be normalized that people just host their own email servers and that's how people communicate. Throw one up on a used $20 Pi from ebay and take a backup every week. Setting up all the security things is the easy part. The hard part is keeping your IP out of bad lists. A cheap VPS might also be an option.
