what are the implications of discord having a kernel level anticheat?
>>108566941That's the thing. You need the anti-cheat to be using immutable hardware, similar to the TPM, for it to be effective. Then it can be open source and not bypssable.Real solution is to move everything to a user mode driver platform, then heavily restrict all things in the ACPI table which expose direct memory access. It will take a long time

>>108565215Julia's best feature (dynamic dispatch) is simultaneously the worst. It takes an INSANE amount of time just to load a basic bitch script and generate a couple of plots from CSVs, all because it compiles every single thing every single time. I know its infeasible to compile every function for every combination of parameter types, but is it really that hard to just cache the already compiled code from the current session? It's not like this problem hasn't been solved by every compiled language ever created. I just don't get it.The workarounds like PackageCompiler.jl are an option but it's extremely tedious and the system images take up a lot of space.I still like the language, tho, and used it for most of my master's and PhD.
>>108565215>why does no one bother with itbecause almost nobody else uses ityes, this is a circular argument, but it's still true
>Why does nobody use Juilia Nobody ever mentions this, but being an after thought really hurts a language. I have tried to move to languages like Ada or Zig and every time you do you realize that you would have to write bindings to every major library or reinvent the wheel. Its a pain in the ass. Meanwhile languages like python get treated like royalty where the library is built in or specifically to link to python. Using a language that isn't popular is like starting a race a mile behind the start line. You could still win, but it'd be a hell of a lot easier if you were starting with everyone else.

Can we start banning people who insult linux and especially the linux desktop? I've read 3 posts here today insulting linux and I'm not sure why we should accept that as a tech community. I understand there are some rare and exceptional circumstances where users might not be able to post from a linux machine, but we should never tolerate people who besmirch FOSS or openly support proprietary garbage that spies on them and doesn't even respect their freedoms. Can we get this going, can we do this?

>>108564596The only thing I have found no alternative for is google maps. Well, there are "alternatives" in apple maps (just swapping one for the other) and Waze (literally owned by google), but no proper alternatives for live traffic and road status data. IF you're driving in a big city where they will randomly close roads for roadworks or bullshit events or whatever, and traffic varies wildly with time of day and day of weak and whatever meme is happening right this moment, it's a major help and there's no way to get it without selling yourself out to the botnet.Everything else is pretty easy to go without. There's tons of email providers, I have unironically been entirely on cockli + my own domain (with cheap paid email hosting) for over a decade. Search is all pretty shit but google is no better, you can use duckduckgo or startpage or even pay for Kagi (I don't but I've heard it's actually good, dunno if it's worth trusting though). What else, google drive? A NAS is not trivial to set up but extremely well documented, just takes some effort.Oh yeah, and the other thing I use google for is work, because I'm unfortunately not able to tell my company "yeah let's just not pay for the standard corporate workspace and instead put together something autistic like nextcloud". I don't really count that since it's on a work account, only does work-related stuff, and the account will be deactivated as soon as I switch jobs within a couple of years.

I can assure you that shit makes my ears bleed, but it is completely unintelligible. And also, somehow left and right speakers I have near my computer from 2005 made by Logitech are perfectly fine to this day, but I am wrong and I need a $1000 center channel, because only then I will understand, I see. So my perfect hearing and tune are also wrong, because some asshole said you need center channel, and it must be 10X better than all your other channels by price, then you will hear the difference.Come on. Disable it completely, watch a movie without it, you will leave it forever turned off. You lose character tracking with center channel, this is why I literally do not go to movies, properly mixed audio you can have 2 channels, you have 2 fucking ears after all, if you have a convo with 2 people you hear them slightly louder respective to the side they are on, center channel just pipes all voices as mono channel, its beyond retarded.
