could i get some advice on these hand studies? Theyre all 1-2 mins each, the right one is 5 minutes. im really struggling with gving them volume; despite simplifying the hands into simple shapes. the whole doesnt look very cohesive either, it looks jank, and they usually lack the elegance and lightness of the pictures i base them off of.Any advice on how to fix those problems? Or types of exercices to practice etc...Also, I'd rather focus on suggesting volume solely through line, I'm not interested in adding shading/rendering them.

arcane doodles and an attempt to paint like it in another subject
>>7396838I want to say that the face looks very cute at least anon. I like it.
>>7397004So, two major issues:A. Your shadows aren't dark enough for the style you're going for. You really need the range if you want that rendered look. Your shadows are at ~70% lightness, whereas they really need to be around 40%.B. You're shading with a color too close to gray. Even in a gray room with white lighting, subsurface scattering in meat, cloth, hair, or anything else even slightly transparent gives them a colored shadow. As does the reflected light coming off those things. And you have to vary the color of the shadows depending on the material, can't just set it all to purple and call it a day. That just makes the whole thing look both purple AND gray. I know that's a bit overwhelming. You can just make the fleshy bits a bit more red/orange. Anything else give it a bit of it's own color or the color of the room.

>>7397192Yep, looks fine. And yeah, probably. It's clear you're not really sure what shape the boxes are supposed to be, it's best not to confuse yourself by making them twist and turn in weird directions.
>>7397196I'm taking lots of mental notes as I go. Like, I'd change the torso box a bit and also not be so scared to construct within the joint circles to plug up those gaps by the joints. Head box took a lot of tries.
i just finish this doodle today
>>7397166Just for an advice, look up how the pelvis connects to the body and how the legs are connected to it. What are you trying to represent with the second box? If you're trying to represent the hips with a box then your placement is a bit off. A good advice that works for me is looking for easy landmarks in the body to help place construction a bit easier. A couple good landmarks are the collarbones, ribs and iliac crest(the bones from the hip that stick out.) PRetty sure Proko in youtube has super easy to follow up tutorials about the torso and hips and how to find landmarks/simplify.

reposting cause i made some changescan i get some crit mainly on the shading? I've been studying value and color theory since im lacking in that department
>>7397614Ah I see what u mean
>>7397583Does this help you?
>>7397597i didnt know you drew anything besides Meowscarada desuanyway i think this is cool, i like the bleeding effect at the top
Been drawing in pen-only a lot more
>>7397603Her hips are behind the door frame. So who knows
>>7397550>>7397558I'd probably use tones and less hatching in that case but I usually make manga so it might not be the thing you're looking for.I recorded my process on the hatching, done very lightly but you can increase the amount of shading by the amount of hatching you do (also see the links I gave you in the older thread)https://youtu.be/QujXSHLmOZA>>7397621It does, kek, but it's a little late now. i used the one from previous thread and painted over it

>>7397627I read the links. I have them saved. I just need more practice. Obviously.I'll erase and try again. Thinner lines. More plentiful where I want it really dark. Throw some more tones in there. I did the red to pop for fun. But maybe I do the armor a dull grey.
>>7397637Godspeed anonHatching is hard to learn (I'm still far from getting gud at it) but it pays off, it instantly levels up your creations. Some guy in MMG is super skilled, his hatching looks great. >>7394433
The "fun" continues...
>>7396409ok guys i am very new and i didn't practice much but so far i am studying (and by studying i mean actually drawing)>Gesture Drawing>symbol Drawing>perspective>simple shapes, spheres, triangles etc (i start with these every time for like 5 mins as warmup)what now? anatomy? proportions? i have problems with that last onei also trace some things when i have no idea what to do just to train my hand to draw linesalso i just found a set of picrel, will they be good as simple warmup exercise ? it's all sonic anatomy stuff
>>7397615is she supposed to be covered in fur? that's what the lighting is trying to tell
>>7397640Yeah I like that. That's the other style I want. Hatching that keeps a sense of bright. That anon is cool. There's also an anon in oc threads i like a lot. They've posted a few pieces that are great.>>7396281I hope you're around when I post again. Very insightful.
>>7397387>but every time I try to do a face it has to go through 50 revisions before it turns out decentlook at japanese artists' workflow with itbefore the lineart, they either do a scribble sketch on the difficult lines, or just do basically 5 straight lines for the whole jaw
Hello beg, more figgies.>>7397625typically when drawers say pen they mean something like ink. You used ballpoint which more akin to pencil in how it can vary the line width and value. nice jew>>7397615you want to research what is blending or smudging tool and use keybind shortcuts to increase or decrease line thickness so you dont get carpal tunel from billion strokes just to light up her belly. In krita you just hold ctrl+alt and then moving left right while drawing increases or decreases the line thickness>>7397361idk, seems fine to me. if you want to progress as drawer, at some point making single pics doesnt cut it anymore. the audience craves story telling, so comics, animation or making art for vidia comes to mind>>7397288when i dont have anything positive to say, i just redirect them to keys to drawing

I'm not getting any better. It's over.
I'm not trying to crab or be a dick, but I don't think that improvement is worth "How did you improve that fast??? WTF???" posts. He improved at a normal rate if you draw often and don't have a mental disability, which to be fair is better than most of the people on /ic/.
>>7397601How did you improve that fast??? WTF???
>>7397729Thanks for posting the 1-month improvement compilation, anon. Good progress. He'll soon be too good for /ic/ and leave. Many such cases.

>>7397740Quick someone make a thread about him

3D-printing a loomis box and putting it up my butthole so I can finally FEEL THE FORMS for real
>>7397361I think the composition is weak. That box shape in the background keeps dragging my attention away from the characters. I think your values are muddy and make it hard to see things clearly. There's also something about the colors that don't work for me, possibly how there's no dominant color, like the piece is almost evenly split between a green top half and red bottom half. You're doing good though and I like the idea so keep at it.
Can I get some general critique on this? I'm looking to improve.
>>7397745we did
>>7397771Why'd you hide the arm my manIf you wanna improve go study hands
>>7397776>Why'd you hide the arm my man because the pose is meant to be sorta shy.
>>7397771>long thighs, short forelegs, as there was no good construction to place the knees at the midpoints of the legs>bad right foot>bad toes>awkward foot posture>asymmetric arms with many issues due to a lack of good construction>the wand has conflicting perspectives along its length>asymmetric horns placementPerspective and figure drawing sessions are needed, also habitually zoom out and mirror your sketches before committing to them
>>7397676>>7397736I just like drawing my character in different situations. I don't know what to tell you
>>7397781How do you incorporate figure drawing and perpective onto a sketch?
This took me four hours to draw. I feel it's one of my best so far (since September last year), and this was the first time I ever drew this character and I feel I nailed their anatomy well enough. Only thing I am not happy with is the right foot perspective wise, was a bitch to figure out so hope it isn't too jarring. Critiques are welcome.
>>7397784what is a sketch?
>>7397783I love you cyclops-chan. Don't worry about all these guys hazing you
>>7397784By starting the sketch by them>figure drawingDepends on the method>perspectiveDraw grids and vanishing points, for the basic shapes - boxes - in different rotations and point perspectives first, exactly until you're sick of itThen switch to thinking of how things are relative to the eye level>bothFigures are made of basic shapes that you can start with as easily manipulatable boxes, you can find/guess the rest of the answerYou'll just have to search and try different videos, methods, books, courses, because nobody knows which ones will help you understand better
Idk why two of them are in damn near the same pose but it was on the same day.
>>7397345I've got no critique, just wanted to say I like the subject. >>7397601I think you did well on all creases and folds on the clothing. >>7397676Many factors go into learning: goal, starting point, how someone learns, the pace at which they absorb and process information, willingness to experiment, and ETC. It happens. What's important is that you don't discouraged and keep trying.
>>7397796Why did you draw a jew anon

>>7397783Me too anon.I wish I had as much drive to draw as much as you. I always put too much time in a single project rather than moving on to learn more. How much time do you spend on an image. I'm anywhere between 2 and 6 hours
>>7397801>>7397823Not a fujo, and I draw jews because I am a jew.>>7397802Also you have to be put down. I'm a man.

>>7397824I don't really keep count, I'd say upper estimate is 2-3 hours maybe, but I like splitting drawing my images into 2 sessions. It's so when I return to my drawing, it's easy to notice mistakes
>>7397834sovlful
>>7397836I do that too. I think that's why I end up taking so long. I'll come back and be like "what was I thinking?" And change a lot.Thank you for the insight

I need to practice more. I am still terrible.
>>7397866DEFINITELY not terrible? Its literally just unfinished, shade.

>>7397896Settei dreams, screenshots of anime, genga.
How can I make the glowing eye stand out more? I tried a technique I saw on YouTube: copying the eye layer, setting it to color dodge, and applying Gaussian blur, but it looked shit.
>>7397899>when it's in fact just drawing and having fun while doing it
>>7397866You are. That hand shortcut is the worst thing artist have made the perfect example of how its watered down.Stop fishing for compliments.
Does the hand and/or face look fucked up or is it alright?
>>7397931>>7397899impossible pill to swallow
>>7397897Try using a bigger brush. And up the contrast the core shadow on the pear is clearly darker than most of the picture. The shadow on the stem looks like one of the darkest areas. If you're having trouble with contrast try simplifying your values into 3 separate tones (Dark light midtone) afterwards you can blend and adjust the darker tones.
>>7397925Just choose lighter colors. It's a hlowing eye. Treat it as a light source
>>7397728
>>7397925Things that glow are bright, like really really bright. Like, no matter what color it is, it's going to mostly just look white. Also, bump the contrast to make the light parts look lighter.

How do I improve my art when I am forced to take frequent long breaks due to chronic pain in my joints and nerve pain? I want to grind to be better, but when I set my eyes on a grind to undertake, I can barely scratch the surface and begin feeling overwhelmed when my studies take just as long as more intricate pieces I want to do. I’m frustrated because it hurts to practice, and I feel lost.
>>7398008Chuni kino. I prefer this version>>7397989 with the darker background because it makes it all sinister.

>>7398197Better??
>>7398087You can still study without actually drawing; reading books and watching videos on subjects you struggle with. >>7398121Looks awesome.
>>7398087I think it'd be best to accept you have a hard limit on your training and that it's okay, you can't change that fact so don't beat yourself up over it. Keep your old art in a folder to help gauge your growth and focus on the now, making progress little by little. How long can you draw before it becomes too much to deal with?
used a youtube thumbail as reference and drew thisn eye witout tracin it
>>7397925Brighten up the eye more, desaturate the brightest part, then darken the areas around it and saturate the colors more there.
>>7398260Yeah, I should read though some books at least.>>7398269It’s something I’m struggling to accept, but I’ve reached a point of not having much choice. Lately, it’s been less than 30 minutes but it’s because my normal work exacerbates it. Some days are better, but there’s entire stretches where drawing at all leads to bad enough pain to make me not want to do it. Downside is it feels like damned if you do damned if you don’t, so sometimes I just load up on Tylenol and ibuprofen and push through it anyway. I usually regret it though, so I’ve been taking it a lot easier. I’ve been working on a still life in acrylic gouache, but it’s been close to a month now. I was thinking about buying a course that’s considered good so that at least when I do have the energy and pain allowance, I’m doing stuff that’s productive and proven and structured.
>>7397934The hand is the biggest culprit. It's way too small and it looks like the dude has a fifth finger, but I'm pretty sure that's just supposed to be his palm. I think a general rule of thumb (or hand lol) is that hands are about the size of your face. I *slightly* moved some things around that I thought were off. Made his hand bigger, moved his head and neck to the left, and adjusted both arms to bring them closer in size. Not the worst though! Keep it up!
>>7398277I'm sorry for your situation anon. Hope things get better. In the mean time, you could hit practice drills like gesture drawing and value studies, things that can be, and SHOULD be, done briefly. Trying to brainstorm ideas here ... it might be worthwhile to stop before the pain sinks in and then take notes of what you need to paint next in the piece or spots that need touching up. That way you can hop right back in without potentially meandering about. It's silly sounding, but oil paints take forever to dry, so you could just pretend you're a classic painter and the breaks you're taking are for the painting, not you -- even if you're doing acrylic or guache.
>>7397786Outstanding, anon! I think I want to play this game for Christmas.

Drawing one Makima every day for the month of December to see how much I can improveDay 10: A little late tonight. To mark being a 3rd of the way through the month, I tried doing a drawing in half my normal time with minimal uses of references. As bad as it looks, at least she looks like makima to me. I used to only think I could draw stick figures unless I had an image to directly copy.I know her tie is comically short, but I already put my sketch pad away
>>7398325Draw your lines with confidence so they don't look so bumpy, and there's less chicken scratch in your final drawings. And please use a reference.
>>7397493The first couple, Anatomy for Artists and Simplified Forms were great, quite well done for what they are. Seems like the newer ones were rushed a bit, they didn't seem as polished but still useful as they covered muscled bodies and fat people which a lot of books don't. Overall they don't have much instruction. He said they are meant to be used more as reference books rather than instructional books. That's why they are A5 size, so you can carry they around with you when you need to reference something. If you're a beginner it'll be hard to get much out of them. Beginners should use books or videos with more instruction.
>>7398330Aha yes it looks goofy but i intentionally wanted to try without a reference because as I said, I'm honestly impressed i even managed to come up with this. How can I improve my line confidence?
