Why aren't ballistic submarines the backbone of world navies? Why haven't surface ships been relegated to carrier protection and amphibious operations? Why not make SLBMs out of RIM-66s and Standard missiles and Tomahawks and ASROCs? If you want force projection why wouldn't the ambiguity of the presence of submarines be enough to scare your enemies?

attack subs can sink your carrier.
cruise missile subs can destroy your planes when they aren't in the air.

Over the past century, technological changes have come about which would actually make the Ratte a viable platform.
>miniaturization of nuclear reactors
>miniaturization of nuclear warheads

There is no better time than now to build the Ratte.

>1300's-1400's
It would be a YUGE factor. In our timeline, gunpowder was discovered by alchemists searching for an elixir of eternal life. In this timeline, gunpowder is invented specifically to kill dragons. Black Powder would be a game-changer and Smokeless Powder can be made as early as the 1500's if there is enough incentive and people working to discover it. The various ingredients to make gunpowder were known to Classical civilizations, it's just no one had the depth of knowledge or incentive to create it. Dragons change that.

I'd wager we'd have gunpowder weapons sooner than in our current timeline.

Armies would be smaller in number, lighter, and more elite units, as soldiers would have to be VERY well-drilled to handle dragon attacks.

>Missile infantry
Used to distract or possibly even get a lucky kill and to harass/suppress enemy infantry
>Pikemen/Spearmen
Used to protect Combat Engineers and a last ditch anti-dragon formation. The sarissa is the primary anti-dragon infantry weapon.
>Combat Engineer
A cross between Missile and Skirmisher infantry; well trained at crewing animal-drawn weapons like Catapults, Ballista, Trebuchet, and other artillery weapons. Later, they get cannons. Able to also engage in siege works, build camps, and even conduct engineering operations for the marching army.

It gets wilder.

>Education
You can't afford to have an uneducated populace, as you need a sizeable portion of your population to be smart enough to increase the pool of recruits for your engineering corps. Knowledge would be a powerful tool for building dragon-proof fortresses, anti-dragon armor/weapons, mechanics for engineering, alchemy; the list goes on. Literacy would be higher overall, in this timeline, because it would be necessary for survival. In the event that a dragon torches your city, you'd need everyone to be smart enough to help rebuild, or at least capable of following written instructions and institutional knowledge. Libraries would be even more valuable than they were in the ancient past, with a book on geometry or construction being worth its weight in gold.

Dragons would be an evolutionary pressure for mankind, as we would no longer be apex predators but one rung down on the food chain. It's only due to dragons not seeing most humans as a territorial threat but simply another edible thing in their world, that we are able to co-exist with them at all.

>Legitimacy
A ruler without the ability to control dragons is at best, just a warlord. If a dragon begins causing trouble, they're fucked. A dragon-blood king on the other hand could simply walk up and tame the beast. A practical version of "divine right".

>Religion and Government
Dragons form a universal yin/yang concept across mankind. Able to wreak havoc or create a time of plenty. With a dragon, you can institute whatever kind of government/social structure you want. With a large royal family of dragon riders, you can conquer nations. Dragon Feudalism would be the standard government structure, with Monarchies, Republics, Tyrannies, Patron-Alliances, and Free-Holds/Cities, and Marches everywhere.

>and that's a massive leap which ignores the possibility that dragons could very well have thick hide that can stop an arrow but not a musket ball.
Can you supply a target that cant be scratched with a crossbow or longbow, but doesn't resist muskets?

Because suits of armor that can stop muskets can still be dented or slightly perforated by longbows and crossbows.

>anon, please bear in mind you're talking about a fictional animal

Literary rates in the US are split in to 3 levels, with Level 3 being the highest; anything below is considered “partially illiterate.” From 2017, we had 48% of the adult population reading at Level 3, 33% at Level 2, and 19% for Level 1. There was a 2% increase in Level 1 and a 2% decrease in Level 3 from 2012. For 2021, the rates are now at 28%, 29%, and 44% for Levels 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Numeracy rates have remained relatively the same, but people are becoming more illiterate for this past decade alone. Not to say that means people are becoming dumber, but being literate is a huge hurdle for the modern world and being able to make effective decisions in an information and text rich world. One could argue that you probably want to be able to read the name of the person you’re voting for on a ballot, but if you see announcements for portraits being put on ballots then you know why.

>The 2024 results show that fewer than a third of students nationwide are working at the NAEP Proficient level in reading at both grades. Scoring at the NAEP Proficient level means consistently understanding written text and interpreting its meaning.

>Around 40 percent of 4th graders are working below the NAEP Basic level in reading, the largest percentage since 2002. Fourth graders scoring below NAEP Basic likely cannot recognize a reason for a character's action implied in a story. About a third of 8th graders nationwide are failing to hit the NAEP Basic benchmark in reading — the largest percentage ever.

A third of 8th graders in the 2024 NEAP assessment can't explain a character's motivation from context in writing.

I’ve had both and the P32 is the far, far better carry gun. Tomcats are fat and heavy. If it’s just a range toy or to be cool, the Tomcat wins. If you want a gun with the tip up barrel, get the Bobcat.

Hello everybody, Bonkanon here. Today we'll be making a morning star from exotic African hardwoods.

I tried HSS on dried wood and didn't have much luck. Cupped carbide cutters like Hunter offers seems to do ok for me. I think I get a worse finish with maple and several other woods I don't remember right now than I do with wenge but generous sanding and CA glue works for me since I'm rarely turning anything where tolerances matter.

>Rheinmetall is supplying Ukraine with additional systems for national defence. The country is set to receive its first Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles as early as the beginning of 2026. A contract to this effect was signed in December 2025. The order value for the first five combat vehicles is in the mid double-digit million euro range, with the systems being financed by the Federal Republic of Germany.
>The decision in favour of the Lynx KF41 was made after extensive testing of the next-generation infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). The IFVs will feature the two-man Lance turret and be configured specifically for Ukraine’s armed forces. The next step is to procure additional batches, including production in Ukraine.
