So obviously this needs to be read in translation unless you have the kind of autism, and determination, necessary to study old English; but what translation? I have a predilection for any translation that stands out as a literary touchstone in its own right, like Pope’s Iliad or Golding’s Metamorphoses, so, if you can, make a recommendation in that vein.

I hate this reading of the book, it's the most braindead explanation and just makes the whole book shit.

>I think the times when he claims he can't remember something are mostly evasions.
Personally I think every time he forgets something/misremembers/gets lost means that something fucky is going on. Could be mixing up his memories with first severian/enters the corridors of time (explains getting lost in the cemetery and meeting vodalus, getting lost and entering the atrium of time).
It's also pretty clear that while his memory is perfect he doesn't have instant recall, he probably first has to remember a date or a specific moment and work out from there, and he's still limited by whatever he was paying attention to.
>>
>>25010531
Anything to do with the Atrium of Time is associated with Valeria, and thus Severian will avoid talking about it as much as he can without failing to address it entirely. It's safe to assume that he's intentionally leaving out a lot there.

The whole point of Paradise Lost is that Satan is fundamentally in error regarding his understanding of God, as well as himself. God is not a tyrant, that is Satan's own egoistic projection. God is the totality, the supreme creator that exists outside of and precedes creation.
>The mind can create for itself a hell out of heaven, and a heaven out of hell. (Satan speaking in Paradise Lost)
Here the error is showcased. What the world is goes beyond one's own created image of it. Satan glorifies his own ego as supreme.

Yes, though they are not taught to do so (as they are also not taught to pray to Jesus, but to God the Father, according to the model provided by Jesus in scripture).
> and generally place a low value on women, including the Virgin, seeing them as ultimately subservient to men, not capable of reaching the same level of exaltation as men, and basically only good for making kids.
This isn't true. Its impossible to find some census on "Mormon attitudes on women", and these will be what they are, but the idea that women are subservient to men is not part of the doctrine. They have a much higher view of women than traditionalism essentially because they believe Eve is not responsible for bringing evil into the world but, mother of all living, is made the heroic decision to bring humanity into mortal existence. In Catholic teaching Mary in considered as a Second Eve who reverses Eve's shame and is the mother of the new Adam, Christ.
> They think Mary was a nice woman who gave birth to Jesus and that's basically all they think about her.
This is true that they follow Protestantism in this sense. It would be odd for them embrace a Catholic devotion to Eve, since this originated as a grass roots popular movement which was only accepted by the institutional Church until later. In Mormonism there is female divinity but this is not often discussed with any detail, and probably for good reason because people's perceptions of femininity are so distorted nowadays, that such an exercise would likely lead to confusion and disrespect.
>>
>>25010441
>If they believe in anything it's in money and in the performative form of faith best suited to parting lay members from their money.
Doesn't seem to me that they are preforming Mormonism just to increase the size of a fund that they don't even use. These are very strange motivations which I have hard time imagining. All that money is embarrassing.
>>
>>25010473
Are Mormons well-versed on the Old Testament? Or do they basically ignore it?
>>
>>25010577
The Church cycles every four years reading Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants. Early Mormonism had a very Old Testament flavour. Harold Bloom believed Joseph Smith recovered the authentic Jewish religion. Modern mormonism emphasizes the Book of Mormon more than in the 19th century
>>
In my opinion modern Mormonism is a bourgeois misunderstanding of the original revelation, but this is inevitable and maybe forgiven since the original revelation is revolutionary in a way that is beyond description.

This is basically an 800 page advertisement for logical analysis. Russell goes through all the major philosophers, explains why they were wrong and he hates them, and ends by claiming that, if we just get really autistic about language, answering all our questions will be easy.
And you know what? He was right. Now we've got it all figured out, and instead of wasting our time with philosophy, we can beat off and play video games.

Let's discuss Beat poetry. I'll start

"Sweet Boy, Gimme Yer Ass" by Allen Ginsberg

lemme kiss your face, lick your neck
touch your lips, tongue tickle tongue end
nose to nose, quiet questions
ever slept with a man before?
hand stroking your back slowly down to the cheeks' moist hair soft asshole
eyes to eyes blur, a tear strained from seeing–

Come on boy, fingers thru my hair
Pull my beard, kiss my eyelids, tongue my ear, lips light on my forehead
–met you in the street you carried my package–
Put your hand down to my legs,

I mean we can laugh at this now but making a little poem about being a fairy was enough for the government to come after you and be involved in a national debate about obscenity. It took this little to upset the establishment and kick some shit on The Man. The past is a foreign country.
Watch some old videos where Ginsberg discusses obscenity and it seems so quaint. Or check out that video where Monty Python have to defend Life of Brian from the archbishop of whatever in Britain. That one is extra funny as I think the pearl clutching bishop was later exposed as a secret fag.

It seems like the only books that sell nowadays are goonslop for women. My ex gf read nothing but goonslop. My sister-in-law reads nothing but goonslop. My coworker listened to goonslop audiobooks on her bluetooth earbuds. I go into the bookstore and half of it is goonslop it feels like. The only time I see women in the bookstore, they are in the goonslop section. The fantasy section has been overtaken by goonslop, and the sci-fi section, being less suitable for gooning, has shrunk to almost nothing. I wanted to talk to the girl there but I realized her standards are probably so high from reading all about billionaire rapist serial killer werewolf men all day that she would be disgusted by my mere presence. Now I want to write my shitty cyberpunk novel, because for once I have creative furor for a publishable idea, and now it seems utterly pointless unless I make the main character a rapist. It feels like no other books sell besides those anymore. Yes I can write for myself like I always have, but I lost interest in writing stories that only I will ever read, as I get older and my time gets more precious to me, as well as my desire to attempt to leave a legacy on this world. And it sucks that my best chance at leaving a name behind for myself, would be to write goonslop.

>Henry Darger was a janitor in Chicago, and he pretty much kept to himself. He never mentioned that he was writing a book. But just after Darger's death, his landlord discovered his magnum opus, "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion." The book is several volumes and 15,000 pages (single space!) of strange, fantastical adventure stories, accompanied by over 300 illustrations of children and semi-human creatures. Some of the illustrations take the form of collage, and the largest clocks in at 10 feet wide.

Go on Xitter right now. Top-to-bottom the entire website is a U.S. government propaganda psyop to push for neocon regime change around the world with every MAGAtard rallying for it. Because that’s all the conservatives can amount to despite how much they attempt to rebrand as “populists” or “isolationists” or whatever else. Mass public opinion on politics does in fact matter and they’ve realized they can engineer it the best with social media.

It has become abundantly clear that the system welcomed Trump and his conservative movement because mainstream liberalism was making people too docile, with October 7 really terrifying the ruling class in particular. Once they achieve all their geopolitical aims in solidifying the system using conservative manpower, it’ll be back to our regularly-scheduled programming as usual — demographic replacement, pornification, fertility decline, woke stupidity, etc. Conservatives as usual are too retarded to realize how they’re being used because all they want is to shoot foreign brown men and fuck their women

The Struggle for Europe by Chester Wilmot

>This text describes the build-up of the invasion of Europe, and the scenes at the beach-head and in the "bocage" of Normandy. It also discusses the disputes among the Allies, the Anglo-American difficulties over Grand strategy, and the friction between Hitler and his generals which culminated in the plot of July 20th 1944, as well as the pincer movements of the Russians and the Anglo-American forces which brought Europe to victory.

Jews have lived as separate communities amongst Europeans for centuries. They have markedly different dispositions to an array of genetic diseases. They have a markedly distinct culture that can't be clustered with any European national culture.
Jews switched to the "fellow whites, lets us ally against browns" line only because Israel is threatened presently.

There is a good penguin anthology. Here is from Thomas Carew

>From our close ivy twines; there I’ll behold
Thy barèd snow, and thy unbraided gold.
There my enfranchised hand on every side
Shall o’er thy naked polished iv’ry slide.
No curtain there, though of transparent lawn,
Shall be before thy virgin-treasure drawn;
But the rich mine, to the enquiring eye
Exposed, shall ready still for mintage lie,
And we will coin young Cupids. There, a bed
Of roses and fresh myrtles shall be spread
