That would push them both to cheat or act too aggressively. Yet, the episode clearly showed that RD was obsessed with winning no matter the cost and therefore, she cheated and used her wings, while Applejack still cared more about friendship than winning , to the point that she believed and trusted Twilight when she said that AJ tripped on a rock and that RD had nothing to do with it.
