For me it's the opposite.
Attacking means running towards the goal only forwards, often with a careless attitude about the balance of your team, mismatch areas, the tactical set-ups, whatever. Defending on the other hand means excelling at both types of bidirectional running: running towards the opponent's goal and also running backwards towards your own goal to follow the marking compactly with your teammates. It's also a task that develops anticipation, composure, spatial awareness, discipline, as well as other mental traits. Try telling a striker to learn to run backwards (face towards the ball carrier but body moving towards his own goal, so to speak) without him losing balance and see how long it takes him to either give up, consider changing sports, or ask to have you sacked.
Forwards (especially fox-in-the-box type centre forwards and wingers with a strongly offensive mentality) almost always rank at the bottom of the IQ curve: just listening to them talk is enough to lose brain cells every quarter of an hour, because they tend to rely too much on their technical skills or physical qualities.
If you had to choose between fielding 11 forwards or 11 defenders to win a match, always choose the latter, because defenders are mediocre in attack and forwards are fucking hopeless at keeping it together when shit hits the fan.
