Thread dedicated to Sci-Fi based discussion. 40k need not apply. [\spoiler]How goes your sci-fi setting, anon? I am currently running a Traveller game in a homebrew setting, and am getting lost in the sauce of stellar physics.
On the subject of Traveller, how do (you) feel about ansibles? Do you prefer your settings having inconvenient (ie. "slow") communication? Or instant transfer of information regardless of distance?
I've had an idea for a more space oriented cyberpunk game brewing for a while, though I'm reminded now that 2300 exists and while I'm not super familiar with traveller that also seems like an option. So what is trav like?
>>97352667I definitely prefer the thought of a information network time gated by jump mechanics. It can create some very interesting scenarios, and it can give players an actual sort of soft currency of exchanging news when they hit out of the way spots that aren't on the major trade paths
I've been interested in running Stars Without Number in a space frontier like Star Trek TOS
>>97352667Here are my rules1. FTL travel is only possible with a real sentient person controlling the ship. Don't try brain in a jar, it backfires.2. FTL communication inside of a solar system is possible, but only through some fairly expensive infrastructure.3. The vast, vast majority of information is carried by courier ships who must make the FTL travel by themselves.4. There is instant FTL galaxy-wide communications available, but only the big giant ancient asshole alien empire knows how to do it, and only those people extremely, extremely high up get to use it. This typically takes the form of pre-recorded video messages. A live holo-link with a member of the Imperial Court means someone on the other side of the call really fucked up. Humans (aka players) have access to this tech, but can only send very simple text messages, like telegrams, can be vulnerable to distortion, it's not reliable.I like the feeling of Traveller "Age of Sail" communication, but I also want to leave myself open to other stuff.

Declare that the 'rules of magic' in the setting just don't work that way. Mind-control magic can't be used to bypass entire plots if it doesn't exist (except in hostile hands as a plot device).Problem is you need to do it to a good chunk of spell list. And considering how many spells WoTC churned out it's a fucking pain in the ass.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97348819>but if you spend one WP you can count a 3-4 on one die as a successyou could make that spending WP lowers the "success range" for each point spentso, if you spend 1 WP dice with results 4+ would succeed, is you spend 2 WP they would succeed with 3+, and so on
>>97348968i mean that if you use your endurance to push a roll it would mean that you get another chance to take advantage of your willpower and convert a 3-4 into a success. So they might not directly interact with one another but using your endurance to push a roll means an extra chance to use your willpower. For example you make a check that requires at least 2 successes. You roll 4d6 and get 1,2,2,5 and you push the roll for a result of 2,3,3,6. This allows you to use your willpower to turn one of the 3s into a success and succeed on the roll
>>97349080Ah! Very clever. Indeed, it creates a synergy between the two, but in a different way.But then why not push the roll with endurance every single time you do a check? If we take your example:>Climbing check, requiers two successes>You roll 4D6 and get 1,2,2,5>That's 1 success. You decide to push>Roll 4D6 for endurance and get 2,3,3,6>You get a second success>That's enough to succeed without spending WP.Pushing via endurance has no downside. Am I missing something?
>>97348994The WP system works perfectly by itself. I've tested it in play and it's great, it gives exactly the kind of tension and dynamic I was hoping for.The game involves a lot of exploration. Having a system where you can either outright succeed, or need to spend ressources in order to succeed, means that even minor obstacles or setbacks can matter in the long run. You get situations where>Taking a risky shortcut is a gamble, but can be worth the risk>Going from point A to B never feels like a loading screen, it's a potentially taxing endeavour that players don't do lightly>Players get more and more careful as the trip goes on and they run out of spare willpowerI've done my fair share of hiking and that's exactly how it feels. Exactly what I was trying to represent
>>97352531Obviously you are going to put a restriction on how many times one can push a roll per session, tied to the endurance number. You can also restrict it to physical tasks.Additionally if you fail a pushed roll then you suffered much greater negative consequences so there is always a greater risk involved.

>>97353247The basic metaphysics of the setting is that it reality runs on the stories it's inhabitants tell, which is why the raw reality of the wyld is the way it is.Creation is built on top of the wyld, with rules laid down atop. But because the base metaphysics are narrative, you can tell damn near any legend you like if you have enough power. The catch is, others also have that power.Exalted could slay and imprison the primordials.Exalted could cage other exalted. The deathlords were once elder Solars. >>97353486Dude you are reading a lot in the people saying that they don't like a particular setting element's flavor. Pull the stick out of your ass.
>>97350134What makes you think the Neverborn would want the Primordials dead in the first place? They were, if not friends, at least allies for ages. There were never that many Primordials, so it's pretty likely they all knew each other on a personal level. The Neverborn are the Primordials who literally gave their lives fighting for them all, and the Yozi are the ones their courage saved from extermination. It's not exactly clear how much needs to be obliterated for the Neverborn to die properly, but Malfeas seems like it'll be the last thing they want to go for, well after they've toppled the pillars of Creation, obliterated Yu Shan, washed the Wyld down the well of Oblivion, ended old Zen-Mu, and assassinated most of the shinma. They don't want more Neverborn, either - being a Neverborn is to suffer endlessly and impotently at the bottom of the Labyrinth.Loyalism in Deathlords corresponds strongly to high Whispers ratings, and the Neverborn are probably actively telling any of their agents who get funny ideas about laying low the surviving Primordials to not do that.
>>97353639>but Malfeas seems like it'll be the last thing they want to go for, well after they've toppled the pillars of Creation, obliterated Yu Shan, washed the Wyld down the well of Oblivion, ended old Zen-Mu, and assassinated most of the shinma.I thought they just wanted to destroy Creation

>>97349107I'd say he's closer to Lucifer than the Anti-Christ; he once loved God before ultimately losing his faith and turned in a misguided attempt to further what He represented thinking he could do a better job.
