Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Very minor point, but I have here a hadith of sound transmission indicating that Gygax (pbuh) used such a structure:

>by the book the only way for them to realise that they have is by finding contradictions in their maps, for example their position with respect to a known landmark, or a hex they've already been in seeming to have a different terrain than it should
While this is true in most editions, it's worth noting that it's not true in OD&D, where it's clear from context that the players immediately know when they're lost (since the getting-lost procedure specifies that they're allowed a directional deflection as per the rules of Outdoor Survival).

>>97367158
I guess it's similar, but it's less a cosmopolitan wizard school/wizard mecca in that case, and instead is just one powerful, dickish wizard in a tower who will cast spells and stuff for you in exchange for an exorbitant payment in magic items.

Because 4chan is anonymous and /exg/ is the second most active place discussing Exalted after the Discord and the main counterdiscussion to what's considered there. If anybody on the Exalted team thought they were in an echo chamber and wanted to get opinions from outside of their own social sphere and preferably anonymously so that their own groups don't ostracize them for associating with the other, here is the place to go. We also sometimes get homebrew coming through.

I'm not saying they are here, but it wouldn't be crazy to think they lurk.
>>
>>97364986
Now this is actually the cancer that's killing the board. I mean this dismissal of other people's experiences, which is way too common on /tg/.

>>97365580
Well, people who work on Exalted also tend to be fans of Exalted, and lot of them do post on various forums. Back when he was a dev, Holden visited here once or twice - once or twice while namefagging, that is, he may well have been around more anonymously. It wouldn't be particularly weird if some writer occasionally visited here, but I don't think there's any of them currently do so.

They also have a 1.5 million strong standing army with six months training and 600k in reserve fighters. Of a population of 23 million where four years military service is mandatory. And at least two Lunar guardians with a bunch of cataphracts on top.

OP regularly played his gimmick on the Choose Your Own Adventure general frequently enough that the entire user base got wise to his samefagging and ritual posting, especially when he went into random philosemitic tangents. This is a little bit like being outran by a fat child, no one on /cyoag/ considers it an intelligent general. His whole deal is whining whenever people aren't obeying the most autistically retarded version of Clarke's Third Law (the one about magic and tech), and whining whenever jocks are allowed to win, and whining whenever nerds aren't able to kill anybody with their minds.

https://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/92251865/#92255551
One anon defeated him just by posting a stanford.edu link that explained the whole philosophy that he was bastardizing, and telling him to read and respond to the counterarguments against it. No response was ever given.

Eventually, anons started to ironically thirstpost over him (calling him a woman) and it pissed him the shit off, eventually they also noticed that he had the technophilia, Israel obsession, resentment of jocks, and 'izzat mentality' of an Indian, and they started to call him an Indian woman too. This was also effective because he's an eugenicist and scientific racialist (it rationalizes the caste system).

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

According to the Cyberpunk 2020 Sourcebook and Eurosource. There's an arms manufacturing company called IMI (Israel Military Industries) with it's HQ in Israel that still exists as of 2020, and according to the cyberpunk fanon wiki they still sell weapons into the era of The Red. Which implies Israel at least exists.

What's really funny is that while Europe, the divided USA after the corporate wars, all of asia gets their own dedicated lore book. The middle east was such a controversial topic they barely mention it.
The closest we got to one was When Gravity Fails, which is a lorebook for an entirely different cyberpunk setting (created by sci-fi writer George Alec Effenger) that is very different from mainline cyberpunk 2020 canon.

Alright, after having done this rolltable.
Here's some feedback:
It's fun.
I particularly like the mechanic with the many heads through repeated throws and the nod to the Nibelung saga in the last category. Definitely keep that
The colors are a bit too D&D coded and kitschy imo.
Maybe make it twelve options instead (throwing two dice at once is always more fun) and tone down the saturation a little.
For the specific color shade, choose one (free) or roll again to determine it.
Also add some metallic options for variety. e.g.:
>3-5 Green (1:Emerald, 2:Spring, 3:Fern, 4:Moss, 5:Hunter, 6:Forest)
>6 Black (1:Smoke, 2:Charcoal, 3:Ebony, 4:Raven, 5:Ink, 6:Onyx)
>7 White (1:Chalk, 2:Pearl, 3:Porcelain, 4:Eggshell, 5:Alabaster, 6:Bone)
>8 Gray (1:Haze, 2:Ash, 3:Dove, 4:Stone, 5:Slate, 6:Iron)
>9 Brown (1:Beige, 2:Clay, 3:Cedar, 4:Mahogany, 5:Umber, 6:Walnut)

Are there any tabletop RPGs similar in style to the classic video game Baroque?
11 replies omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97365430
The dungeons part itself could be done using just about any system, though OSR games would be ironically a bad fit because they have far too much in the way of random and unfair deaths. Baroque is not an easy game, and you're expected (and even required) to die a fair amount of times even just to progress the story, but you can reach a point where you will never unintentionally die unless all the worst luck hits you simultaneously, and it's actually important to reach that level of skill in order to avoid accidentally losing some item that you've been babying for several dozen dungeon cycles or some key item needed to progress the story. A more skill-based rather than luck-based system would probably be best.

The dungeon exploration is really not all that unique, and what makes Baroque special is the larger mechanics and structure. Ultimately, Baroque ends up being several different experiences for different people, so replicating it comes down to what kind of Baroque you're hoping to emulate.

At the most basic level, it's a few nasty dungeons cycles with some incomprehensible story floating above it. Not really that hard to emulate, and it's definitely a matter of style over substance.
At the next level, with players who really get into it, you'd have players who reached one of the more accessible endings. A DM would really have to plan and prepare some esoteric nonsense for the players to slowly unravel, with various moon logic puzzles on how to get further and further into the dungeon.
And, beyond that, you start diving into various guides and FAQs and discover that there are still unexplained mysteries, with inconsistencies between ports of the game (there's been 10 versions, thanks to different systems/publishers/regions/languages, resulting in people getting as far as to believe they have 99% of the mysteries solved only for another version to introduce a dozen new ones). No one should play a TTRPG like that.

i would say use obscuring/covering terrain to your advantage, otherwise if you feel like your opponent has a bit of bloodlust you can use that to your advantage by leading your cav and certain units fairly far away on the board so you have more breathing room to get objectives

in most cases if the enemy is focusing fire and charging your missiles and cav, then that means your hero units (which are the backbone of CoS armies) have more wiggle room to do things as well

There is the team. 2 slaangors in white, 2 khorngors in red, 2 tzangors in blue, and 2 nufgors in brown. No pestigors. And one chosen each of the 4 as well, though its only their small bits of skin you can see it. Every league I make sure the slaangors get the passing and agility upgrades only, the tzans get mutations, the khorns get offensive, and nufs get general/defensive skills.

I been a die hard beastmen player for decades.
