how after so many fucking years there's not a compilation of actually useful, compressive worldbuilding resources? there's next to 0 guides out there on how to do anything that is not the blandest dnd clone ever and not even in deep, just superficial trash. is worldbuilding a lost technology among nerds?

It didn't look like OP was asking for "a rulebook to exercise his imagination", it looked like he was asking for "useful, compressive worldbuilding resources".
>>
>>97836893
hello?
>>
>>97841918
Still, worldbuilding resources can improve complexity and believability of a world, but they will do nothing to make it less generic, which is what OP complained about.

This may be an appropriate place to post this. I am foreshadowing a threat from deeper in the dungeon that I'm writing and have found that there doesn't appear to be a B/X statblock for an Aboleth. I checked my AD&D Monster Manual and Fiend Folio and didn't see it there either, but I did find it in my 2e AD&D monster manual.

My question is, how much (if at all) do I need to tweak a statblock from 2e in order to fit B/X, or would I be better off just homebrewing from scrap? I understand that certain elements (like XP) are very different and am prepared to adjust those, I'm just wondering if anyone is familiar with any weird trends (like AD&D2e creatures having lower AC or better attacks on average). Google searches exclusively tried to tell me about 5e statblocks.
>>
>>97841878
The aboleth comes from I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City, so it couldn't be in the Monster Manual for reasons of causality. It's in MMII, the first monster in the book actually.
>>
>>97842072
Ok thanks, I don't have that one but I'm sure I can find a statblock online.
>>
>>97842086
The book's on archive.org if you can't be bothered to find a PDF in one of the troves.

No, power has to be represented by huge numerals. If you have a power of 5 it means you're some kind of puny insignificant fag, a weakling not worth the trouble. A power of 5.000.000 on the other hand means you're a dragon-god who is about to wipe out entire armies by looking in their general direction.
Only thing better than a bunch of zeros is the infinity symbol, which kind of looks like zeros if you think about it.

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

yes, obviously, left looks better than right, no one is going to disagree with that. but when playing a GAME, right is obviously going to be a funner experience for BOTH sides, just look at the utter lack of balance in the left terrain set up. the near side has to traverse a river and then fight through open fields while the far side immediately gets access to most the hard cover of buildings on the map and on top of that gets the hedgerows overlooking the open fields. its blatantly not fair and poorly set up.

>but just give the attack side more units!
ok then, how do you balance that? how do you know how many points to allocate to balance out the terrain advantage? double? triple? what if thats too much and now the attacker has the distinct advantage? its way too much trouble to figure out. thats why tourney tables will always provide the better gameplay experience for BOTH sides. GAMEplay. WarGAMES. These are GAMES. A good game needs to be fun for all involved. It is not fun when one side has an inherent advantage over the other. There is a reason why 40k tournaments are by and far the most popular wargaming events and playstyle over every single alternative."

Think of it this way. Look at Battletech players. They arguably play on the ugliest paper hex mats and hex counter terrain in wargaming, despite the fact that playing BT with physical and 3d terrain has existed for decades. They CHOOSE the uglier terrain because readability and clear rules for LOS matter to gameplay, aesthetics do not.

I bring with me a story, a story I must re-type because 4chan fucked my post in my dealing with IP range bs! Long ago, 16 years and a couple days ago, an anon made a small game called Wizard Battle and posted it to /tg/. Last year, someone on a discord server I'm in told me of the game and told me to do something with it. As such, I've cleaned the game up a bit in some parts, and filled it up in others. Since the original game was posted originally as a thread, I thought I would bring things around full circle.

>but anon the amateur game design thread is 8 pages down the hall!
Too bad, I already posted an earlier version of this in a game design thread.

The game: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Hm4bLdzsX4bzYMxgs-N1fnCNVDUwKKXxwxqD9eddqdk

When you place your block or move the chieftain you care about what is going to happen for at least the next several turns. Small variations to the board are enough your change decision. I am not constantly pulling Pueblo off my shelf but I have not gotten tired of it. The gameplay is still engaging to me after at least 10 plays.
I will add though that I have almost always played with the cult sites and turn order auctions. I prefer them because they force painful choices, but they do also cause the games to be more varied.

go for the objectives
help others go for the objectives so they're on pace with you and you're not a threat
play in a group that cares about winning more than about foreverwars
plan how to stop the guy scoring right in front of you, hoping that he'll stop the guy scoring before him, in a chain of backstabs that ends with you defending successfully (its hard but sometimes happens)
save any Action phase secret objectives for last
all secret objectves are scorable, they are lying to you if they say otherwise
all debts before round 3 are binding, no early deal should involve round 4 or after because that's when you stop posturing and start fighting everyone (adjust by +1 rouind if you play with no expansions)
almost every faction has that one thing that it wins with, especially when using expansion material. go for that thing.

It's not that this is strictly my.favourite way of negotiation, it just works very well to keep negotiation pointed and concise without losing much of its essence. In theory I like completely freewheeling negotiation games more, but as said find them exhausting and often longwinded. Same reason I hate the kingmaking hot potato; games just grind to a halt.
