After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.
>>97354358>causal play is still bestThat's probably the problem I had with Shandalar 2016. It felt very much designed around optimal play where every mistake is punished with immediate failure. I hated crafting a deck that was laser focused on discards and land destruction but it was the only strategy that actually worked for me.
>>97354218It's infuriating that we'll never have a proper client. MTGO codebase is from the 90s and the UI looks absolutely terrible while Arena is on par with gacha slop mobile games. Was it that hard to invest in a mtgo amd rework it to make it look more appealing to a newer audience? I don't see why wotc wanted to make a new client from scatch when one already had every card in it.
>>97354269Who are you quoting?
Same applies to a lot of TCGs. This is why games like YuGiOh were best before a certain set, even outside of card balance. Your deck was the best with what you had, and you made it work. But it's ok because the people you are playing against are also (usually) playing the same way.Now they print cards that arent just stronger, but clearly being made for a specific meta purpose.
>>97358140>You could literally skip your first couple turns and not die. Unthinkable now. There have been tournament matches where somebody surrenders from their opening hand. Who enjoys a game like that?

2eIf a player detects a trap, whether non-magical or magical, do they learn how to disable it and how it triggers as well? Or is it just they learn of its presence? How would they determine its affects and how to disable it?
>>97358933They know enough to make a Disable a Device check at least, although how much more than that kind of depends on the hazard. The relevant rules here are (as listed here https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=2846):Detecting a Hazard:>"Every hazard has a trigger of some kind that sets its dangers in motion. For traps, this could be a mechanism like a trip wire or a pressure plate, while for an environmental hazard or haunt, the trigger may simply be proximity. When characters approach a hazard, they have a chance of finding the trigger area or mechanism before triggering the hazard. "Later in that same block of text:>"Anyone who succeeds [a secret Perception check against the hazard's Stealth DC] becomes aware of the hazard, and you can describe what they notice."The first quote specifies that they're rolling to detect the trigger area or mechanism, and the second clarifies that a successful perception check makes them aware of the hazard, with the GM describing what the character actually notices in the world. Nowhere does it say that they learn what the hazard *is*, although it's often obvious (e.g. the mechanics of a hidden spike pit are pretty clear once you've noticed it), and when it's not I imagine a relevant Recall Knowledge would probably tell them more about it.What's clear, however, is that they've definitely found it, and they can make a roll to disable it. The rules for disabling hazards are a little further down:Disabling a Hazard:>"A character must first detect a hazard (or have it pointed out to them) to try to deactivate it."Comment too long. What were GW writers thinking of when they came up with the idea of hive cities? Are they walkable for most of the inhabitants or are people supposed to have cars, bikes, scooters, etc. to move around on? Most of the videogames I've played seem to show sections of the hive where you would walk around on foot or ride some form of public transit.
>>97359117Healthy balance, yeah. Like every time, the inquisitor (Heinrix you are my brother, I love you) is right when it comes to chaos and daemons, mostly. You cannot fuck around with chaos worshippers and cults who already destroyed one world, or not exterminate genestealer cultists, that is just making logical choices and keeping safe. The inquisition does at least 75% of what it does for a good reason, when they're not at war with each other or trying to kill every single person who saw a daemon instead of conscripting them into inquisitorial warbands. But the little things, like saying you don't see a point in mass bloodshed for faith, or saying that you want to understand xenotech, those are little things that do feel like they're realistic without trying to veer out of what 40k truly is, but still show that not everyone is a foaming mouth zealot. Or even the simplest ones like "Yes I know our people are enemies, but the REAL enemy is Chaos" when speaking to the Eldar which is just like, logial.
>>97359160They were thinking of the hot new topic in architectural circles in the 1980's - the arcology, and what would happen if you stuck a bunch of stuffy brits into one. They then mixed it with dark dystopian environments like 1982's Blade Runner. They satirized it by making the Imperium's cities hives the dark end result of the idea. The satire was then lost when the Saudis started building them 30 years later and they were more horrifying than one could possibly have predicted.
>>97359203The reality is even worse than the dystopian concept, huh? Sounds about right for a british satire piece written in the 80/90s
>>97359223>The reality is even worse than the dystopian conceptA lot of modernity is also reflecting back into 30k/40k, because what is being done today is way more intense than a bunch of 80's nerds once hypothesized. If you read closely, the Dark Mechanicum 'Silica Mutus' descriptions read eerily similar to current LLM training methods, for example. Modern technology is moving faster than 40k's 'mysterious supertech.'

>>973536772>1>4=3>6>5 with varying margins
>>97349718>>97349789It's all about the key squares. The key squares of a pawn where it's the only (relevant) pawn on the board are if it's on the enemy side of the board all six squares directly in front of the pawn, and if it's on its own half of the board it has only 3 such key squares - you skip the row in between. What the hell is a key square? A key square means if the attacking king can occupy it, the pawn queens, if not it's a draw. So here the pawn is on d7, the key squares will be c5, d5 and e5 - skip a rank due to it being on your own side of the board remember? So these concepts are kind of clunky at first and can take time to get to know but they're well worth it if you want to be good at such endings. If white moves first: Kd2 Kc7 Kd3 Kd6 Kd4 - and the black king can never reach one of the key squares because the white key can gaurd them. Obviously if for example Ke6 instead white will just go Ke4, still stopping him from getting to the key square. The key squares are only different for a rook pawn, where the defending king only has to get to the last rank on the third file across c1/c8/f1/f8 for it to be a draw. It's more interesting if the king has to go to the side. For example if the position is a white pawn on b4 and the white king is on c1, and the black king is on f8 the key squares become a5, b5 and c5 and the attacker must get to one. But if he goes Kc2 Ke7 Kc3 Kd6 Kc4 Kc6 he again can't get to a key square. But if he goes for the a5 square instead: Kc2 Ke7 Kb3 Kd6 Ka4 Kc5 Ka5 and he's made it and he queens.
2/2>>97357011Also if you're the defending king always put your king in one of the two squares in front of his pawn when you can, when that's not possible, move it to the side to match his king's movement. You can do things different but when you've seconds on the clock you want simple rules. It's very painful to lose a clearly drawn k vs p ending.

So I'm currently trying to arrange 3 different decks thematically match a specific experience. Not by things like card types but by the experience playing it should provide. The end goal is to finalize the deck and then make custom art cards fitting to the theme. Im a ways into the first one but I'd like your thoughts on all three:>A Sekiro themed deck around Ashina Castle that turtles with little tricks throughout and old dying Isshin as the commander>A Sekiro Deck from the position of Wolf with heavy damage prevention and counters for parries and living weapons/for mirrodin/job select and other artifacts for his tools and Planeswalker for allies>A Bloodborne Deck from the position of the Healing ChurchThe Ashina Castle one is being assembled now. The commander I have is Arcades the Strategist. Ashina was seized when Isshin died and people were scared to approach when he was still around so a commander that is central to a deck working fits the vibe. I can be imposing and turtle, with some tricks and removal on the side. Have a sideboard tutor that is the Mortal Blade where I can bring in some card for Sword Saint Isshin or other named characters. (Also it's thematic to just fucking crushed eventually so I'm looking forward to just having fun with this deck)The Wolf deck is harder to assemble. The intention is to use Raff Capashen so I can flash artifacts to counter things and have more reactive gameplay overall. Im struggling with having solid win conditions. The Healing Church deck is the least developed. I don't know what mechanics would fit the opt-in but corrupting nature of the blood in Bloodborne. I want to lean towards goad but nothing fits it well so far.

>>97354719>Literally falseLegacy armies DO NOT include all models in the old factions, in fact most are very curated.Furthermore, they're purely a gameplay concession and nothing more. Most of the casters are dead, most of the units and warjacks don't exist anymore in lore, you are no longer collecting something that is relevant to any continued world building and the setting didn't do the Battletech thing of having separate eras that are all supported. They're also bad for the game, because now half the tournament legal armies in the game are quite literally unable to be purchased. If a legacy army becomes meta, it either gets nerfed fast or the cost to entry skyrockets past GW prices.Again, this could have been avoided if every original faction had some representation by now, but if you wanted to play Skorne and don't already own it? Get fucked retard. Menoth? Wait 3 years for Adepticon 2026. Mercenaries? Circle?
