It's such an obvious idea. Where are they?

Marines in particular are the one Imperial organization which is explicitly incompatible with Tau'va. They are a dedicated brainwashed, anti-xeno force, made out of mutilated children kidnapped from their parents and forced to undergo insane and cruel trials resulting in deaths of most of aspirants for no reason at all.
This is a senseless cruelty done to achieve something which Tau have no need for anyway. And so Tau wouldn't tolerate. Literally the only more retarded idea than Tau Marines is to have Eldar living under Tau Empire, because Eldar are an ancient post-scarcity society to which Tau cannot offer anything.

yes they are and nothing changed despite grifters trying to create some other controversy out of nothing
>>
>>97211911
because GW realized it would cause to much of an uproar to give other factions space marines beyond the Imperium and Chaos, that being said Tau could probably do their own version of space marines for regular humans

After the the Tau'va manifests in early M42 a narrow slice of the population of T'au plus their populations of non T’au who are faithful to the emerging Tau’va religion. find themselves able to control the elements that the four T’au Castes are named for. This control being identical to the Bending arts of Avatar. T'au castes are locked to only being able to manifest their associated element whilst the non-tau followers of the Tau‘va are able to manifest as any kind of bender though it is slanted toward people who most strongly resonate with a given Element's spiritual affiliation.

The number of people in Avatar itself who actually 'have' Bending and what makes a person get it or not is a bit loosie goosey as is so just go along with the number I’m laying out being a clean 1% of the population. Training of the bending arts takes the same martial art & fitness regimes as in Avatar though information sharing and media does canonically make the rarer techniques more widely avalible by the time of Korra so assume bending specializations are as common as they are were in that time.Ethereal are benderless but there is a single reincarnating Tauvatar Ethereal who in on a hotline to Tau'va and able to consult their past lives when and if they’ve accumulated any. If Tauvatar perishes Tau'va will just cook up a new Tauvatar but always starting over from scratch on the reincarnation cycle. Bending is to be treated like a Psyker power in terms of there being forces which dampen or prevent it’s use but the act of doing a Bending art in of itself is to be treated as 'safe' insofar as it‘s having nothing in the way of perils to using it.

>firebending
>the weakest
>in a setting with plasma and laserguns
Hell they can already turn any ammo cache into an IED just by doing some hand waves at it, but bending their lasers to hit literally whatever they want wherever it is sounds pretty strong too.
>>
>T'au
>>
>>97207533

Useless? What about [Made up laser gobbldegook]?

If that was a real thing (And it is not) it would be a super specialized skill with physical and also spiritual/mindset requirements to unlock it.

Would a fire bending blast be faster, more accurate, longer ranged, and more impactful than the standard tau pulse rifle? No? Then value of firebenders in an tau army must come by other factors in utility on niche uses. Your example of torching munitions up is just such an example.
>>
>>97204624
Spirit bending would be asking for trouble.

>>97211512
There are top tier fire benders who on firepower and ofc they have the other boons that come with it. Jet propulsion dashes, Combustion bending, deflecting enemy flamethrowers, free traversal of burning locations, lightning redirection, smokebending, it’s a nice little grab bag of uses so Firebending can absolutly be of some value. Otherwise yeah just use a gun since their weapons are already better than average anyway.

What makes a setting don't feel generic a.k.a. not DnD?

DnD does still have that. It just isn't treated as an inherent racial trait to be a specific alignment anymore.
>>
>>97191156

D&D isn't generic if you're not all "muh low magic, no planes, distant unknowable gods, medieval europe no monks allowed" about it. Kitchen sink 2E/3E era is a genre unto itself, and it only feels generic next to stuff that's directly imitating it.
>>
>>97201773
There's actually lobbyists in the port of L'Anguille arguing for a legal distinction to be made between crossbows and firearms, and as other anons have pointed out, the Bretonnian Navy is fully modernized by dint of not technically operating on Bretonnian soil, and as such is exempt to restrictions against "dishonorable" weapons and technologies.

I lean towards "artcore" artist making stuff for video games and the rule of cool being use too much. For every one or two good artstyle towards fantasy art you have three of four bigger shows/games/books/etc of over the top armor, weapons, clothes, and magical items. Though people want to blame anime who often took the items off of them as the cause.

RIFTS! The science fantasy world of post-apoc cyborgs, wizards, dragons, ninjas, giant mecha, super-nazis, robot ninjas, vampires, underwater kingdoms, remnant human supertech civilizations and everything you can imagine all rolled into one setting where interdimensional RIFTS have pierced Earth's fabric and turned it into a playground for aliens and monsters!

Plus other Palladium Games about superheroes, zombies, classic fantasy, supernaturals investigation and more.

To continue more Lazlo fluffing:
>Bone Brothers (or The Boners)
A biker gang that rides around Lazlo and its satellite communities. Too soft to do the Coalition Goosestep, too hard to so the Lazlo trot, the Bone brothers dont quite fit in. They take up riding in packs on whatever assorted vehicles they can manage to afford or repair favoring motorcycles which they see as an extension of personal independance. They keep a loose military structure in terms of hierarchy, although they make a distinction between their rank in the CS and their rank in the gang.

They are to be summed up, riotous oafs. Communities are leary when they here the parade of their bikes and most will decide to close shop early as they come to town. On a good day, they will ride up to the local bar, eat and drink anything not nailed down, and then roll away leaving a mess behind. At worst they are a gang pushing a drunken version of Coalition Law and killing anyone protesting. They argue that crimes committed by members are the fault of the individuals and that the Boners are not responsible, others argue that they are not-so-secret insurgents trying to weaken Lazlo for an invasion. The Brothers are given more slack from authorities under the premise that they are just adjusting to this new life, and roving bands of fighting men does suppress random banditry.

What they don't know is that both opinions are true. The Boners are in the middle of a power struggle between the current leader, Bobby Robinson, and his honor guard and a fiery new comer, Ronnie Bibbles. Bobby wants the gang to be an outlet for motor heads and treating soldiers who were made to do bad things. Ronnie is a secret CS spy and wants to take over the brotherhood and create a crime cartel focusing on drug trafficking and political terrorism.

All that neat tech and such? Your players don't have access to it. It's for the obscenely wealthy/aristocratic types. At best you got cobbled together shit that might explode if you look at it weird. That is the PUNK half of steampunk that everyone fucking forgets about.

Thisbthread have discussed many things.
I will add one more: politics.

Steampunk is about victorian period with high class people.

You cannot have that without some interesting pllitics involved. And many modern wroters suck at politics.

Besides Game of Thtones i do not remember a recent book that did politics well.

Hence we cannot have steampunk, cuase we are too dumb to write politics

I think this is the big problem with the steampunk genre in particular, people fin the aesthetics cool and interesting but can't bother with the actual background of the steam age and its consequences, and the reason they can't bother with that is because that requires reading something beyond YA romantasy and that's boring shit for fat boomers

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Partner Perks:
>Free Skills! (Free)
Ability: Chlorophyll
Moves: Bullet Seed, Solar Blade, Swords Dance, Synthesis
First of all, I'm giving him these moves because I'm also evolving him into Leafeon immediately.
Bullet Seed is a reliable attack that hits multiple times and at a distance.
Solar Blade, though technically never seen in Mystery Dungeon, is a physical version of Solar Beam, which should be enough to destroy anything that gets past our ranged attacks.
Swords Dance gives him a killer damage boost that should let him brute force his way through anything, even the things that resist his Grass-type attacks.
Synthesis keeps him healthy, especially in harsh sunlight. I'll be relying on him to take hits, so he needs the longevity.
>Evolution (-200) (0)
Into Leafeon, of course. With my Drought feeding his Chlorophyll, he should be able to run circles around anything and take most threats out before they become a problem.
Interestingly, although our team should suffer against opposing weather setters, we actually have a great matchup against them. My Fire-type attacks melt the Ice-types with Snow Warning, and his Grass-type attacks shred the Water-types with Drizzle, and the Rock-types and Ground-types with Sand Stream.

Endgame:
I wasn't able to take any perks or items for myself, which hopefully doesn't bite me too hard.
Map Surveyor is a useful ability, but it's one I have some experience with already from Ixalan, and it's a skill I can learn here. It's even one of the skills in my species' IQ group.
Many of the items available seem especially useful, but I have some of my own methods to at least partially recreate their effects, albeit less efficiently and less effectively. I'm not going into dungeons naked, at the very least. Well, figuratively.
I'd like to visit Post Town sometime during my time here. I'd like to collect some Devolve Orbs, because Vivi my Eevee is a Pokemon with lots of evolution potential. He was allowed to devolve for this jump courtesy of the Substitute Your Starter option, but I'd like a way to devolve him in future Pokemon jumps so I can explore all of the different options for him, or pick and choose which form is most useful for me at any given moment. It would be so versatile.
(On a side note: Vivi was a Flareon before this, and could have been a really sweet Leafeon with sun-boosted Flare Blitz in this jump! Too bad Flare Blitz isn't that good in Mystery Dungeon.)

I spent a lot of time procrastinating on the Mystery Dungeon jump because I don't really want to be a Pokemon, but I started metagaming and I think this combo kicks ass. So here I am. We're gonna merk the dungeons all day and night.
>>
>>97211741
Charizard, Garchomp, Salamence, Mew, or Slaking with a decent ability from non-Legendaries since I can't think of a jump that lets you be a Legendary. Maybe Machamp if I had to think of a sixth one for a full team's worth of options.

It was the standard for D&D forever. That was one of the points of a DM screen in the first place. Other than attack rolls or shit with obvious outcomes (you are going to know if you failed a climbing test immediately) the DM was supposed to handle that stuff. Traps were great because you think you disarmed it but didn't and your cleric just got cut in half. Now everyone is paranoid all the time.
>>
>>97211914
My point is he could have been playing shit like prowlers and paragons for 10 years and never seen one.
>>
>>97211316
GM screens are used for secret rolls.
They also have rules on them.
They also hide information that players shouldn't know (trap locations, maps, enemy health totals, etc).
5e had notoriously awful DM screen with 3/4 of it being artwork and condition information instead of actually useful general information for on the fly use.

Compare that to something like the Genesys screen with a breakdown of different check types, different weapon stats, different scenario tests, average loot tables, and what different die results can be used for what, and 5e is laughably bad.

Ugly as shit art, retarded as shit plots, dumbass pulp tropes like one dude solos an army of 50000 and makes a Marvel quip. Always some dumbfuck scifi or lovecraftian content thrown in too. I want grit, realism, and down to earth plots. I want characters who act like real people, not capeshit actors. I want a plot with substance, not mindless style.

I'm sick of it all, everything from Howard to Warhammer to Stench Crusade. Any other fatguys feel the same?

Anon, you are doing this to yourself. I know that retardation is genetic and you can't do anything about it but I will say a prayer for you.

Play Bolt Action or Flames of War then.
Protip you won’t because you prefer being miserable.

Both are based off of pulp understandings of WW2. Okay Chain of Command or Battlegroup instead
