After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.
Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings?

Seeker desperately needed Primal Power 2 like how Paladin desperately needed Divine Power to be worth playing. Instead it got a single Dragon Article that added like 7 new powers that doubled down on its soft control instead of helping it even look at Wizard or Invoker.

The best way to play Seeker is to Hybrid it with Ranger. Sure that drags Ranger down but it drags Seeker up to not being a waste of space. It also makes Ranger the pseudo magic class it was in other editions.

I'm totally not mad that Arcane Archer is my favorite archetype and its hot dogshit in every single edition.

Assassin's biggest problem was it was a class focused on backloading damage in a game where everyone else was focused on frontloading damage, so odds are you either popped your shrouds early ands did jack shit, or you wait a few turns and whoever you were stacking shrouds on is dead.

My table played with the idea of letting any PC activate Shrouds for extra damage. It turned Assassin into a fairly interesting support Striker, but I wouldn't say it measured up well comparatively. If we ever get a game going with one again soon, the next fix was going to be Shrouds being a meta currency Assassin's could spend and regain at a rate of 1/Round on their turn. I get the feeling that would have worked out better.

I feel like for small scale skirmish gaming like that 1st and 2nd edition is probably the way to play. But that's not to say that 3rd and 4th and the Kill Team and Combat Patrol rules of that era, Kill Team of 3rd(KT came about in late 3rd through white dwarf, late 200s IIRC) and 4th are a wholly different beast from what it is now, do a lot to scratch that itch.

It's been quite nice actually. Having a lot of fun playing 3.0, the local HH community has become more active and is growing, and got a lot of motivation to build and paint more stuff now that pretty much every unit and option can work in a battle.

A lot of the seething around 3.0 release came from tourists, WAACfags upset that their 2.0 army is no longer a guaranteed auto-win, and trolls from /40kg/ upset that HH isn't the same soulless tr00nament slop that 40k has become.

A warlord. You'll immediately have a full axiom maniple with a knight pair, that's about 1800 points depending on the loadout. Make sure to magnetize the warlord. That'll give you an average point army with a few maniple options.

This one seems to be up against the strange problem of the definition of unique rather than being a common DCMS unit. IIRC Unique means "less than 5 functional units across the entire Inner Sphere", which most commonly will mean individual customs, but also some prototypes and development units.

That said, as a MUL unit of basically a footnote, it might just be listed wrong. That said I probably wouldn't bust someone's balls if they wanted to take it in a lizard force.

Conversely, I am also a player in another game and am unsatisfied with the DM in that game. I mostly just stay for the camraderie and all the bsing while not playing. But that's neither here nor there.

Try working on yourself, irrespective of whether you continue your campaigns. Hit the gym, fix your nutrition, and focus on yourself.

Dollar store toys are a great source. They used to sell super cheap action figure accessories and I stocked up so that's a lot of the larger guns.
A lot of what I do to cars is cut out squares of plasticard and pile them up and paint them rusty. Jewelry chain, zipties, and granny mesh are reoccurring materials

This seems the obvious perfect order to things. Humans don't want to be the peasant farmers, we want to be the knights and lords, but somebody has to farm, somebody has to smith, etc. Why not have the other races do the menial peasant stuff that they specialize in anyways?

I might steal that for some of the factions in my space game. Rules-wise ships are split into size classes 1 (destroyer/other subcapital), 2 (cruiser) and 3 (battleship), and the human navy uses the destroyer/cruiser/battleship classification and uses the same terms for other faction's ships of similar size (with the exception of obvious carriers being referred as such), but internally other factions could use different classifications.

And here's my take on ship classification based on factions. Game rules wise, ships are supposed to be split into battleship-sized and cruiser-sized capital ships and smaller subcapital ships that operate as squadrons, so the classification is designed to roughly match that regardless of faction (though lorewise for the Collective Fleet only the core ships are in their terminology equivalent to capital ships and everything else considered to be escorts).
