Im out of my depth hereTL;DR Im trying to learn how to run a setting I have no experience with. Looking for setting influence. -I would like some help with this concept, post apocalyptic science fantasy. The idea that the world was propelled forward by magic tremendously, but then cataclysmic events reset civilization, and now were living in the post era. Im used to running Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Lancer, but this new group has requested me to run fantasy for them. I agreed, but I told them I wanted to draw from influences that im familiar with, the closest comparison I can think of is the Televison Show Adventure Time where there was technology and then a fall, and now we have magic and some science tech. Disparate cities and no main governing body. -So, im looking to add to my influence, are there any pre existing settings ? Are there any fun things you've ever wanted to do along these lines ?Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97260557> wizards was the verbatim, first thing I went to look at for inspiration Thank you, the comics seem like a very fun place I would enjoy stealing ideas from
>>97260552I'm learning PF2 myself to run another post-apocaliptic setting. The system itself is not too complex, but the amount of character customization (and the feats. So, so many of them) can be confusing at first. I'd recommend you limit the party's options to the basic rulebook and maybe the player guide. If you want to limit the availability of magic that's pretty easy to do by limiting the spell level your party can get to maybe lvl 3, and same with magic items; obtaining higher level spells might be part of the quest, like finding an old grimoire here and there that contains spells they might not be able to know otherwise. You can balance that by increasing the amount of spell charges they get at lower levels>If theres anything that can copy Lancer, so far thats my favorite system.I haven't played it but I have skim over the rulebook because of the mecha related stuff. Maybe you could run your campaign with it, if only because you're familiar with its workingConcerning the lore aspects you might be interested in checking Dark Sun, since its basic premise is practically what you described; unbriddled use of massive amounts of powerful spells in ages past has destroyed nature in the world and people living in the present have receded into low level tech (iron and especially steel are rare and expensive, reserved to social elites) and magical knowledge is forbidden to anyone but sorceror kings and their servants
>>97260477>Aside from searching for influences, im hoping to walk the fine line of "long standing magic" and not having every problem already solved by magic. Like how do I explain not having teleportation after years of world ending magic spells.Society has not yet rebuilt to the levels where there is organised research. Every wizard is an island unto himself, an ivory tower that lets no others in. Any surviving grimoires from before the end are precious items, and anything that requires multiple fields of expertise or long-term study is unlikely to be reconstructed or redsicovered today. In a post-apoc setting, there is no journal to publish in, let alone a board of peers to review your work. From there, decide what knowledge was commonly shared before the apocalypse, and what was guarded. It might be that there are a couple of "common" collections and tomes that every magical research institute had - one that taught the basics of a simple self-defense spell and one that taught you about the four things to NOT attempt to do when you're a basic level wizard. As a result of that, all the wizards in such a setting would know how to cast "I have +4 defense against magical attacks" which would make developing pointy-finger blaster magic kinda pointless, since literally every wizard is walking around with a big defense bonus against that 24/7. And every wizard is politely informed that if you try to develop teleportation magic without "The Threefold Triangles of Pilch and Bergum" you will inevitable end up fatally displaced across all three axis of space. That's just an example of course, tweak it to your needs. From there remember that most editions of D&D require you to study and learn a spell before you can actually cast it, enforce that and make "research" a long term persuit. For that, I recommend cribbing from Ars Magic, but I'll need a second post to ramble about Ars Magica.
>>97260650Please please ramble about Ars Magica, I know nothing, your knowledge is a valuable resource to me
>>97260686Aight so Ars Magica is not a game I recommend you use, for a couple of reasons, but I recommend looking into how it handles some stuff without using the whole game.>The setting is tied quite heavily into the system. >Things work on the dominant paradigm of the place and time, which is Mythic Medieval Europe. God exists as he was conceptualised then, and is thus the ultimate authority. The system is partially balanced around the fact that not only does the church have massive political power and influence, it's backed by the magic resistance that all clergy have and the anti-magic effects of holy ground (there's a lot more to it than that, but "you have trouble casting spells in church" is a good simplification)>The rules are crunchy, detailed, and tied into a very specific magic system. That's probably a whole post (to come in a minute)>The game itself works best when you have a mage and non-mage character per player, because mages are THAT given to spending seasons at a time researching in a lab while their thugs go off on a mission that is fun to roleplay. But that is a good thing to steal in theory - that there are mages who spend large stretches of their career holed up, consuming resources and performing delicate fiddly research into highly specific areas of magic. They probably work with a few other mages whose areas of interest overlap enough to be useful, but not so much that they argue endlessly. Like how if you get three paleoarchaeologists to study one fossil hominid, you want one who specialises in skulls, one in teeth, and one in spines or hands. That way they all know the vague area but each can defer to the highly granular expertise where it matters.Performing this research comes with significant risks, since in Ars if you fuck up casting a spell badly you eat nasty backlash, and a research spell is the definition of "not yet perfected".But those mages are very necessary for their contributions to magical research, and get paid.

So the other anon is right, you need to hold it to get the effects of the relic for yourself. If someone kills the bearer and picks it up, they get the relics text then.
>>97260421>-2 cards is the main issueSee I haven't gotten enough hands on experience with the game to know if these synergies will pay off, but the existance of them makes me want to build decks to figure them out. In theory a ramping effect can be good for a large monsters and or angels deck. The game is subtly different in how it evaluates drawing and cheating in cards, so it inherently looks useful but only if you can put that mana to use. Theoretically, a "void matters" deck doesn't want to spend too much time building up sites to get the max benefit of the remaining void spaces.

>>97257697Eh, I kinda saw this coming, just because it's the same thing that happened earlier in the game with blockers/floodgates.Bandai saw something slowing the game down, makes removal easier until the only way to win is OTK because nothing sticks on the board after you pass turn. I still think they should have printed a "floodgate" keyword so they could print cheap removal that affects only them/blockers, and give decks answers to things that stall their game plan without fucking over every card in existence. Just like they should have printed more your turn protection to deal with aces instead of letting every deck clear level 5s for free.I'm curious to see if dual cards give some sort of viable defensive option to kick the cycle off again, but I can't see how. Unless they're security bombs stapled to consistency cards, so security can actually be relevant again.
>>97259872Im new to the game. What exactly are "floodgates"? I have seen them mentioned but dont really know what it means
>>97260577It's a term borrowed from Yugioh, and in our case it refers to the rookies that are designed to slow the game down by preventing your opponent from gaining memory or cheating costs. "Can't gain memory except by Tamer effects," "Can't reduce play costs," "Can't play Digimon by effects," rookies with those kind of effects.
>>97260621>It's a term borrowed from YugiohIf people aren't allowed to use U for Blue, then you can't use the term "floodgate".

>>97259285>players ask for a deck list>players ask for all the combosI feel like these are very normal things to see in any TCG. Did you exclusively play limited so it's odd to see?>players complain about the formatThis for sure is not exclusive to any one game and especially from MTG. If you mean format as in playstyle there's the cards-designed-for-commander in all other formats issues, if you mean format as in time period the recent one is izzet meta in standard again. Not a dig at the game and just making a point that people have things to complain about.
>>97236634Guys. Why do I feel that I much more competent in some older formats than I am in Master Duel? I have topped in multiple tournaments, but in MD I have troubles getting out of Diamond Rank but everyone says it´s pretty easy to reach Master.
>>97259486>I feel like these are very normal things to see in any TCGI want to preface my response with two things, first mtg requires significantly less deck knowledge for success and second I think yugioh is the superior game at the momentThat being said yugioh players seem to have a fundamental lack of curiosity. Like people dont build their own decks, they dont even figure out what the deck does on their own then if they dont win they throw their hands up and blame the deckMaybe its a problem local to me but that shit would get you laughed out of an fnm.
>>97260406>That being said yugioh players seem to have a fundamental lack of curiosity. That's a phenomenon you'll notice the more closely a player follows the meta, and in particular with this meta since the answers are either to splash in Fiendsmith (old) or Mitsurugi (new). Untiered decks and slightly older meta (as far back as 2021 but also as nearby as pre-Fiendsmith Snake-Eye meta) were more matchup-dependent, where you could feasibly lab out a course of action for most competent decks to contend with whatever was topping the charts. Nowadays you'll just get people asking how A deals with Mitsurugi, or what card to hit in those engines with X Y or Z forms of generic interruption. Obviously it's a bit of an over-simplification. But the meta does not inspire creativity after someone else solves it, and most people have their eyes on the meta.
>>97260291Either because those formats are in a solved state or populated by people that went to them explicitly because they're easier than the current format, while the current format is volatile and Master Duel is populated by people that constantly interact with it.
Dubs and above turn into canon.

One species of freshwater octopus in particular, have made a home in the wetlands and swamps of what they call the 'over world.' Small, but with very complex social groupings, the Muslims ignore them and just see them as prey animals resulting in a hearty amount of calamari in the Caliphate's diet. Only a southrons have found some very intricate and very complex dwellings in the swamp, including oddly shaped rocks that the octopods tend to congregate around. These beings are in the awkward phase between bestial instinct and true sapience with most writing them off as wild animals. Very few have observed their music-based form of spiritualism in person and that's good, for the Caliphate would exterminate this haram species if they knew. >>97260455The Caliphate reigned for thousands of years after conquering the civilized world probably due to accidentally spreading a plague they didn't understand causing an extinction event . Now for the first time in centuries, they face an equal on the field.
The Elves keep a sapient descendant species of octopus around as servants. Moving on land to escape the Shark plague, the elves started to use this rising species as a way to supplement their declining numbers. Despite being invertebrates, they are pretty hearty in war- using their tentacles to ensnare and strangle ghazis. Where they fall is their relatively weak physique for things like mining and agriculture so they largely function as clerks for elf kind. They spit on the Quran and blame it for the 'Great Dying.'
Dwarven religion is similar to the chasidic judaism, they also practice kabbalah magic.
>>97260571The Elves are worshipped by a number of genetically engineered slave species. With their numbers declining, the Elves decided to create servants to toil the fields and to march off to war while they built esoteric temples celebrating past achievements of their dying race. Great statues tower high in the steppe, giants toiling as the great cracks of their hammer echo through the desert, horns blare as the battle thralls smash against the Ghazis. Empty, sprawling palaces sit in the far north as grim reminders of the passing of time. Empty cities resemble tombs with sarcophagi homes and walls covered in Fey ruins and pictographs with the long march of the slaves echoing through the empty streets. The Elves blame the Muslims for the death of their misbegotten race and the collapse of their civilization, so they wage the Infinite War against the hated Caliphate. It's ironic in a way for the Elves have created an entire religion based around idolatry with them as the focus, playing into the Abrahamic worldview of polytheism and thus justifying Islam as the Northern Jihads continue on and on. But it's also a grim reflection on the Caliphate. To Muslims, all non-believers be they kaffirs or heretics, were created by Allah to serve Muslims with the Elves sitting as the logical conclusion to where that path leads and ends. The north is a broken land fertilized by the blood of dead slaves and marked with the remnants of past glory. One side looks to what was lost and blinds itself to the present, the other ignores past lessons and marches boldly into a grim future. This is no place of honor.

She saw the "maths" of desire written all over the other woman."Careful, Little Bird," Nadya rasped, her voice cutting through the music like a serrated blade. "You bite that lip any harder, you will bleed into your wine. Is waste of good vintage."Elara jumped, her face turning a shade of crimson that rivaled a sunset. "Nadya! I... I wasn't... the music is just very moving."Nadya hopped down from the sill, landing with a silent, heavy grace. She leaned into Elara’s space. She looked at the minstrel, then back at Elara, a slow, mocking smirk pulling at her scarred lip."He has eyes like a kicked puppy and hands that have never seen a day of real work," Nadya whispered. ," Nadya whispered. Humans don't want to be the peasant farmers, we want to be the knights and lords, but somebody has to farm, somebody has to smith, etc. Why not have the other races do the menial peasant stuff that they specialize in anyways?
>>97259603Halfings, dwarves, and gnomes generally do enjoy doing those things but also are usually self governed. The second things start going bad the people not in charge will get mad at those in charge. Humans just feel like the catch all here.
