Thoughts on this man?
>>97150922>he’s hot and handsome???
>>97150745I hate his strong female NPCs, his attempts at a Scottish accent, and the high frequency of NPCs who are described as non-binary or gender-fluid before they've even been introduced, as if that's something you can tell by looking at them. And he always describes brown characters as having "beautiful brown skin"
>>97150745>Thoughts on Matt MercerInfrequent to say the least.I never followed anything he did.I think I watched the first episode of "Critical Roll", and found it boring and a little sad. Somebody joined our 5e group because he watched it.I painted him a miniature for his character, but then the 'rona palaver happened and I never saw him in person again.Ah well.

>>97248268That’s nerd shit. If I’m halfway through a movie and it sucks I’m turning it off. I’m not getting paid by the movie studios, I’m supposed to be giving a review and if I think it sucks I’m going to be honest about it rather than a cuck who thinks being a “critic” is a serious endeavor
Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsingSo I started thinking. For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup? There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat? What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory? What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.Comment too long. Check out One More Quest. I haven't played it but it seems to have a similar silly tone and play style to the board game Dungeon Fighter (there's a bullseye board, you throw the dice and the results are better the closer it gets to the center. You also have various limitations on your throw depending on the skill you're using).I also played Dread once and it's fun for horror one shots.

>>972482131a. Re: Melee, I by and large agree with this guide on everything except how useful Divine Executioner Stance is. Personally I wouldn't give such a niche effect so much glaze: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z2t7aIbxc5PM5GLf9chOefc3FXtPJyhMPC7PUeLKzFA/edit?usp=sharing1b. Re: Brawl, I actually fully agree with this other list. I also feel it's also why Solar Brawl feels a lot more fun than Solar Melee in 3e: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Qm6VCooKWnZNhvjPgLEtSZ2p2Uso2pu4ViBAREXrAuQ/edit?tab=t.02. If you know what you're doing Legendary Size is utterly insignificant, and you clearly do. It bothers me, from a design standpoint, that Legendary Size presents ANY obstacles at all to a newbie Solar beyond what Attributes and the already extant not-Charms animals have grant. I just don't like the design importance the developers gave "really REALLY big animal holy shit you guys", especially with how Legendary Size making some Infernal Charms cheapter is a thing. It's just fucking weird to me that being big is somehow more significant than the inherent status of being a demigod.3. I could also get into how I feel being prone sucks way more ass than it should and how by the same logic all mounted combatants should count attacking Japan or riding into a place with sharp rocks as a -2 external penalty if we're really going to stand here and declare being on a horse should matter that much in demigod fights BEFORE taking into account the Ride Charms, which I fully accept can and should result in Solars going full Ghost Rider.
>>97248279It is really, really funny to me how Solars simultaneously have what is mechanically the best charmset for winning a fight as long as, AS LONG AS, the fight remains relatively conventional and occurs on a flat plain with no significant details. And also Solar Charms are comically overtuned to the point some nitty-gritty things are harder for Solars than everyone else.
>>97248666>It's just fucking weird to me that being big is somehow more significant than the inherent status of being a demigod. Also all the Primordials were really fucking big so creating the Exalted to fight them but being really big being a critical issue leads me to wonder whether Autochthon needed a few more quality control-type subsouls
>>97248666Oh shit, I didn't know there were Charm guides. Any chance something like that exists for other Exalts?
>>97248893This problem is from 1e, the devs wanted the setting to be about both about playing Goku & Ned Stark but a better fighter.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97206030I made a one-page "dungeon" for DCCIt's more of a side quest, but feel free to tell me what you think. It was originally written as a solo thief adventure, but it should work fine with 2 or 3 people as well.

What are examples of kaiju-like monsters in first decade D&D? I'm thinking something less powerful than the tarrasque but more powerful than a Tyrannosaurus rex. Ought to be fun to use them in domain play, if one gives them concrete abilities to damage structures and "mass kill" civilians and standard troops.
>>97249007Nothing strictly first decade comes to my mind, but if you are willing to make an exception for Gygax (pbuh), you have "gargantuan apes" in WG6 Isle of the Ape, basically King Kong, and "gargantuas" in Oriental Adventures, which are essentially humanoid, insectoid, or reptilian kaiju. The Companion set also has a monster called gargantua, but it's just an algorithm to increasing a monster's size, HD to 8×. If I remember correctly, ACKS has better rules for scaling creatures up and down. Th Island of the Ape Gargantuan Apes have specific rules for their attacks acting like battering rams
Would love to share some YTers I like to use for inspiration. Looking for anyone you find helpful. Preferably smaller creators and not restricted to 5e. I’ll submit three that I really enjoy while I’m doing prepFirst I’ll submit is Desk and Dorks. The channel is made by a medieval historian and combines his knowledge of subjects to enhance games. I particularly like his take on Bronze Age fantasy and building better town guards
>>97242691He sounds gay.
>>97242691I like his general leanings, the "punctual and fast" analysis style and the fact he goes on his way to review obscure ttrpgs, however i would like for him to go with analysis on more established and even older rule systems instead of itch.io tier shovelware or meme games nobody will remember anything about 5 seconds about discovering them.
I would recommend game geeks rpg, but it looks like he quit making videos entirely. Also, his wife got involved and ended up pushing reviews of stuff outside of the norm he did.Not entirely /tg/, but william srd used to be good for reviews of old systems and games based on them, but he just started sperging out over gygax being problematic and people who dislike 5th edition one day. Quite a few of his videos just sperg out about politics now.
I like captcorajus, but he is pretty slow to upload.I see people recommend Alexandrian, but he seems pretentious most of the time.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.
>>97246364Everyone obviously has their own personal opinions, but as a general rule 1, 3, 5, Generations, and Insurrection are considered bad by the general populace, while 2, 4, 6, and First Contact are considered good.Galaxy Quest is obviously good; Nemesis is obviously bad, so inserting Galaxy Quest preserves a trend that had already been observed for decades by that point.Once you get to the Kelvinverse I think broadly speaking people will agree that the 2009 movie is a lackluster Trek film but a serviceable sci-fi action movie that did its job of getting people interested in Star Trek again.Into Darkness is 9/11 Trutherism: the Movie on top of the problems surrounding it trying to recapture the Khan magic with precisely the wrong actor cast as Khan. Benedict Cumberbatch isn't even *bad* as Khan, he just absolutely should not have been him.Star Trek Beyond is good, with the new actors all firmly settled into their roles, everyone getting a chance to shine, and on a personal note watching it literally made me a better person due to my overall relationship with Trekkies up until that point.Note that even though some of these movies are "bad", though, they can still be fun to watch. Search for Spock is great; I love Kruge as a villain. And I will die on the hill that Trek V has three good scenes, and while it's bad it is never *boring*, which is more than can be said for Trek 1 or Insurrection.Trek 1 is best described as a movie that wants very, very badly to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, without actually understanding what makes that movie a good one.
Traditional games?
>>97242723Ferengi are like the only interesting alien in star trek.Maybe klingons when the writers remember that you need something else beside warriors to make a civilization.
Writers who primarily write fantasy fiction should simply not be creating alien races. They're too concerned with things like "how will the reader feel" "how well do they work in interactive scenes" and stupid bullshit that has nothing to do with sci-fi. Aliens should be designed from a sci-fi fantastical point of view. Their physiology and behavior should stem primarily from the thought "what would intelligent life look like on another world" and not "what should intelligent life look like to casual players?". This is just another example of fantasy writers being unintelligent hacks who are incapable of true imagination. Everything has to be carefully crammed into a little box that they decided has to be based on a specific theme and genre created in the 20th century.
>>97248952I mean it's likeIt depends Sometimes you want nonhumanoid cartoony freak aliens It's fine you can do thatI feel like people overthink the shit out of the aliens thing. They're just fucking smart organisms from another planet. They're not these super inscrutable unknowable enigmas.
Why are you still using plastic terrain?
>>97243915Yeah; I had my first experiment in using a candle to melt and braid sprue offcuts into model trees recently. It's easy as fuck and fun.Buying model trees is a scam; you get more than enough material to make a free tree on basically every infantry sprue.Just base it on a coin for weight, and apply paint and flock as it pleases.

>>97247570Only if you insist on putting dykes in your car. It's a miniature wargame with a heavy Mad Max/Death Race flavor that uses Hot Wheels or Matchbox scale cars. Partly an excuse to raid your forgotten beaten up childhood cars, convert them into post-apoc style and give them a new life. The game itself is fun too.
>>97247524Gaslands has an optional rule where if you and the DM can't decide on the outcome of a rule, it automatically becomes whatever outcome is most destructive for everyone involved. How you feel about that should let you know how you'll feel about the game as a whole.
>>97248462Also Twisted Metal and The Running Man.
i was just thinking on asking if it was possible/if it existed, but more specifically if a racing game could be translated to a ttrpg experience without it losing all the fun of a race.

>>97248933Spearheads were supposed to be that for AoS proper: buy a Spearhead and use it as a RoR for another army. I do feel like if it persists as a gamemode they will have to be more flexible but I expect it'll just replace Warcry as a mode for model releases detached from battletomes - hence it including warcry and UW units now, as a primer for upcoming exclusivity of new kits. We should have like here's an Ironjawz Spearhead with 6 Gluttons or something though
>>97248933>>97248943Half the point of spearhead is to be a start collecting box, doesn't really work if it's a mix. I can see them putting some of these ideas in a white dwarf article or something, essentially 'legends' spearheads.
>>97248990and half of the point of bundles and regiments is to entice people to collect other armies, and yet gw designs the spearheads as genuine traps and restricts alliances as much as possiblegw is simply wrong with how it's handling stuff

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies. These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence. This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.(Continued.)
>>97242578>it's a decent if a light on world buildingIt is supposed to be a toolkit RPG that expects the ST to do the work of fleshing out the Web of Pain. Even then, the core rulebook alone details four cities, each with their own conspiracies that make up a segment of the Web of Pain.Eric Zawadzki is currently writing Deep Dive, a supplement that fully fleshes out 40 conspiracies from Standing 1 to 10. It also has a full-on sample Web of Pain for STs who want something ready-to-go, spanning dozens of conspiracies.>>97242583Thank you.
