It is good and I like it better. The newer one is still very weeaboo but the older one comes from a more innocent time where no one cared, at least not publicly. It's totally unabashed about being some western fantasy of what Japan was like whereas the remake tones that stuff down. I don't think the new adaption captures the spirit of the novel well, it tries too hard to be less weeaboo which removes a lot of the charm, especially that of the thoroughly implausible love story that tracks through the novel and 80s show. The 80s also didn't try to force me to learn Japanese to understand what they were saying in Japanese, unlike the newer one when they left bits unsubtitled so that the viewer could be just as confused as the European characters at times. While I can see some good for leaving off subtitles in some productions, I don't think that helped the story telling in this story.

Compare the 1960 sand and sandals epic Spartacus with its wonderful saturated colours, over the top spectacle, square jawed never sets a foot wrong hero to a grimmer film like 2000's Gladiator with its slightly less square jawed and slightly flawed hero who lets his desire for revenge overcloud his judgement, throws in a little brooding, some moral quandaries, some emotional angst over the death of his family. Both very good films and both enjoyable. Same for both Shogun miniseries.

While they wasted him and this was not up there with his best work, this was the first thing I saw Toshiro Mifune in before I knew who Toshiro Mifune was.

Didn't hurt that it had Yoko Shimada as Mariko either.

>nobody referencing the enshittification of video games
2020 came and went and the normoids are leaving. What we have now, however, is a very solid AAA vidya -> indie vidya -> TTRPG pipeline as people grow increasingly dissatisfied with the gaming industry's offerings. This is the main reason paid DMing won't go anywhere: gamers want to GAME, they know forever GMs have the best games, and they will gladly pay (because hey, 10-20 bucks a session is better than 80+DLC+season pass + loot boxes + time-gated microtransactions + deluxe preorder bonus + playstation plus + pokemon home + tip for a game everyone stops playing in a month)

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

The edgyness is "american edgyness"
They can show you 50 minis of disemboweled bodies but you'll have like only 2 with tits, and no women is evicerated
So it kinda reads as "trying too hard to be edgy"
Kingdome Death Monster kinda does a similar thing, but with an anime style
I would actually kill someone for an actuall, horrorporn game that isn't afraid of showing women getting impaled (when you have no problem impaling men)

You don't want to give the Sapper the Satchel Charge as they're Heavy so they won't be able to move and shoot with it.
You could give it to your Faris as they're Strong, but then you'll probably want to change one of your secrets to Cartography & Geometry to give them Infiltrate.
But then overall aside from the Satchel Charge which is once per game, you've got jack shit that's good into hard targets.
My personal picks for HoW battlekit steals are the heavy flamer on either a Faris or Strong Homunculus, and an auto-pistol on a CQC focused Philosophy Alchemist.
Said Alchemist can stack up to 8 blood markers in one activation over 4 attacks, so the chances of getting a Down even vs -3 armour is reasonably likely. So getting a bloodbath with extra dice is definitely on the cards. Plus the have two shots and a charge so they can mop up chaff decently as well.

Expendable only affects Vanguard. Which BoJ is not
>>
>>97281684
you have to engage in combat which means a Charge, but these units will likely be coming on from the enemy backline so you're never really going to make a huge amount; Vanguard (3) becomes Doomed Heroics (6), but you still wouldn't get 3VP from Doomed Heroics more than once with that unit, because there wouldn't be any Units coming on close enough; in practice you would be making it easier to score 3VP once or perhaps twice with a former Vanguard (3) unit (which ordinarily would score nothing for removing Expendable (3) as casualties), not farming VP all game - plus with the very big Levy Troops even a WS5 T5 2+ save unit is going be 1/206 for an unsaved melee Wound or 1/108 from shooting from Levy, which is not that remote of a chance (and the full unit can put out 100 shots in a single phase); it's a humiliation waiting to occasionally happen

>>97281689
I've seen enough Terminator Captains go down to massed Gretchin blunderbusses over the years to know this is a dumb idea (you get nothing if you don't die in combat, including if you get shot down by Overwatch or Volley Fire, and Militia are more than capable of shooting down lone warriors)

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

It is ultimately the same d10-based dice pool game as Chronicles of Darkness in general, for good or for ill.

Resource-management-wise, Deviants have no "Mana" pool. Instead, they work off 1/scene, 1/chapter, and in some cases, 1/story abilities. (Almost like D&D 4e.) However, each Clade has a method of instantly recharging abilities.

Black Vans' earlier chapters introduce ways to adjust dice rolling, such as by allowing automatic success under certain conditions.

>>97281142

The Player's Guide to the Contagion Chronicle actually has a small section on crossing over Deviant and Hunter specifically, though this was not written by Eric Zawadzki.

Eric Zawadzki did, however, write Black Vans, which has a much larger and comprehensive section on crossing over Deviant and Hunter.

Fuck, dude. I completely forgot about that show. Now that I think about it, the Demon: the Descent campaign I ran a while ago accidentally had a bunch of Pete & Pete shit in it, from taking place in a small town full of weirdos that was weirdly isolated from the rest of the world and strangely without place to seemingly everything in town being owned or manufactured by a monolithic corporation with robotic, unsettling employees.

How much has my lens for perceiving World of Darkness been informed by Nickelodeon shows from the 90's?

what is magic like? spellslots or can you just do it however you like?
What level of space opera are we talking about? Only psykers like star wars and starcraft or space magic?
>>
>>97283540

As explained here >>97217944, the game cares about five "Clades," Cephalists, Chimerics, Coactives, Invasives, and Mutants. Beyond this, the game does not bother distinguishing magic and super-science from one another; they are essentially two sides of the same coin. Even in-setting, the lines between magic and super-science are very blurry.

Here are some examples of various flavorings for powers: >>97242552

Even then, two characters within the same Clade might have wildly different flavor. A Coactive could manipulate quantum mechanics, or they may be an outright wizard. An Invasive might be a cyborg, but they could just as easily be the bearer of a cursed blade instead.

>What level of space opera are we talking about? Only psykers like star wars and starcraft or space magic?
Given the sheer diversity of Clades, it is closer to a kitchen sink space fantasy setting than anything. You can play a Chimeric space druid or a Coactive space wizard just as easily as an Invasive space cyborg or a Mutant bioweapon.

It's a thread about ALL OSR games, hence the name "OSR General". The fact that you're bitter that your fave isn't old-school doesn't change that in any way.
>>
>>97280846
No young fren, I was there when osr was nascent. I had no real need for it. I had my old rule books so didn't need the reprints. Only reluctantly played 3e, even then our DMing and playing was old style in tone even with all those silly feats. Not sure why my friends adopted 3e rules, maybe cult of the new.
I was here when people made the first osr generals. Outside of some trollish 4channers, and apparently outside of your blogger's head as he's wrongly conflating things, osr still means what it meant.
Your opinionated little blogger hero doesn't get to redefine "osr" to suit his means. He's engaging in revisionism and I reject his attempt. Even if 2e was not, as in his opinion it isn't, "old school" it was and is part of osr and has been for 21 years or more.
While it's nice to read him admit Cook wrote frames for modules, though unfortunately mistakenly trying to equate this with railroading, and that
>such a thing isn't really different from several treasured modules released earlier
he has the rather poor and wrong opinion that
>module tells you to place an encounter at a certain point in time
is bad. There's no real difference between a dm deciding to reschedule, omit or add an encounter all on his own, whether for a module or own adventure, and a dm deciding to do that based on advice from a module. It's called being clever, wise, adaptable.
In a footnote he adds
>I'm not arguing that the old-school method is the one true way to play D&D, though it's the one I prefer.
but the trouble is he's talking about "the old school" when there wasn't a universal and monolithic "the old school" and old school isn't synonymous with old school renaissance.

Yuyu>Akina for cardfights. Yuyu catches enough Ls to keep him somewhat interesting during cardfights and his deck has actual variance in what its doing by design, even if his xod lists get foul

Akina>Yuyu for character. Yuyu failed to do in six cours what Akina did in three, who also doesnt get shafted by Tohya Mirei and Danji in the character department at the same time

I honestly fucking hate Danji as a character. So much fucking wasted potential and hia development fucking sucks. He starts off as this cool big brother type with a hidden backstory and mysterious motivations. But the more you learn, thr worse it gets. He ends up being a shitty person with little actual substance or justification for his terrible behavior. He's just annoying now.

Alright. This setting does not exist. It's just a shitty WB thread ruined by a bad gimmick. None of this exists.
>>
Several pages in and I think we can call this thing closed. The dubs gimmick ultimately failed with even the OP giving up on the sheer amount of spam that followed.

Yakub kills everyone. The end.
>>
This is a bad thread. The sheer amount of spam overtook whatever potential this thing could've had. What's sad is that there were people who were trying to add to it, especially early on but ultimately lost out to gooners and shitposters which led to the thread going nowhere at all. Even the OP took off.

As a lore fag, this is the biggest W of them all.

The current Caliph is Alef al-Harbiniya residing in Dajaaj which is an ancient capital of a long gone cat empire
