Here are my rules

1. FTL travel is only possible with a real sentient person controlling the ship. Don't try brain in a jar, it backfires.

2. FTL communication inside of a solar system is possible, but only through some fairly expensive infrastructure.

3. The vast, vast majority of information is carried by courier ships who must make the FTL travel by themselves.

4. There is instant FTL galaxy-wide communications available, but only the big giant ancient asshole alien empire knows how to do it, and only those people extremely, extremely high up get to use it. This typically takes the form of pre-recorded video messages. A live holo-link with a member of the Imperial Court means someone on the other side of the call really fucked up. Humans (aka players) have access to this tech, but can only send very simple text messages, like telegrams, can be vulnerable to distortion, it's not reliable.

I like the feeling of Traveller "Age of Sail" communication, but I also want to leave myself open to other stuff.

Obviously you are going to put a restriction on how many times one can push a roll per session, tied to the endurance number. You can also restrict it to physical tasks.
Additionally if you fail a pushed roll then you suffered much greater negative consequences so there is always a greater risk involved.

The basic metaphysics of the setting is that it reality runs on the stories it's inhabitants tell, which is why the raw reality of the wyld is the way it is.

Creation is built on top of the wyld, with rules laid down atop. But because the base metaphysics are narrative, you can tell damn near any legend you like if you have enough power.

The catch is, others also have that power.

Exalted could slay and imprison the primordials.

Exalted could cage other exalted.

The deathlords were once elder Solars. They are no longer exalted, but they cultivated power whilst exalted and are granted new life by the neverborn, they are the next best thing, and they nearly destroyed creation.

There are 700 celestials, all with varied ambitions. There are far more terrestrials, and in teams those too can bring low anything they please. The yozis and neverborn scheme. Fae seek to tear down the blasphemy of creation.

What makes you think the Neverborn would want the Primordials dead in the first place? They were, if not friends, at least allies for ages. There were never that many Primordials, so it's pretty likely they all knew each other on a personal level. The Neverborn are the Primordials who literally gave their lives fighting for them all, and the Yozi are the ones their courage saved from extermination. I know that part of the reason that they use it on cars is BECAUSE it shatters, which eats up a lot of the energy of an impact and means that the soft meat creature inside doesn't turn into paste
