Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>97165346Resources for Newfags: https://sites.google.com/view/wbgeneral/Worldbuilding links: https://pastebin.com/JNnj79S5 (embed) (embed)https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/Eo+fK41FKVR7xDpbNO0a0N4k0YYxrmyrhX3VxnM14Ew/Fantasy map generator: https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/wbi/: https://discord.gg/6ZjEc7dy4TWorldbuilding Hub: https://discord.com/invite/wGjxK3YThe Writer's Forge: https://discord.com/invite/CUxHxWqTira: https://discord.com/invite/f52W6KgComment too long. In a world with a firmament, how far could you see? Could you see everything if you were on a mountain or would air density and pressure and such set a max view distance?
>>97356697I usually start with a story then add and subtract based on what leads to a better story. Usually this cascades into the smaller details.
>>97336483I'll be honest, that sounds quite interesting to me, so I'm not sure I'm a great judge for why you're getting a tepid response. I have some ideas though. If you're trying to convert an existing setting that people are connected with, they may be against the perceived "loss" of the old setting. I've also noticed a stigma around the concept of steampunk settings, but usually just for being "cringey" rather than anything specific. Some people also prefer settings that are more personal, and consider settings with more ship-on-ship combat to be less engaging. That could also be why the people you talk to prefer grounded low-magic settings. Low-magic usually is also easier for people to relate to, if they just want a setting with very minor changes to their "normal". I think that's a similar reason why cyberpunk settings are also usually "safe".How do you pitch the idea to others, is it as straightforward as this post? Sometimes it can just be a matter of a bad pitch that gives the wrong impression.
>>97358029It might depend on what other physics you want to shift to get the world to be "stable". Assuming you don't do that sort of simulation: air density, pressure, general weather, and other obstructions would limit the view.Where I live you need a particularly clear and calm day to even see 7 miles away from a mountain top. It's probably unlikely that a flat firmament world would have a day completely clear and calm across the entire surface, especially when you include the different types of weather phenomena. Though it could allow for an interesting event akin to the borealis or an eclipse, where you could see across the entire distance.
>>97336483>turning my very natural fantasy setting into one with steampunk societies. Airships and pirates, similar to Skies of Arcadia and it slides into a nature vs technology theme. Can't say I'm keen on it either anon. "Steampunk" means a different coat of paint 90% of the time, and since I never played Skies of Arcadia, it doesn't click anything in my head. What else can you say about it? Does the planet has land, or is it just air? I once tried to make something inspired on planetary romance, a gas giant with normal gravity and breathable atmosphere in the middle layers, being too thin upwards and the pressure too powerful downwards. The floating islands existed due to a red element, most of which orbited the planet as a ring of crimson icebergs, and after someone figured out how to power airships with it, people were fighting for land and mining it out of existence. >Why does it feel like everyone I know only wants grounded low magic fantasy settings? No idea.Gonna throw links at your screen, see if something helps.https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/2013/24518330/https://archive.org/details/windships_a_guide_to_riding_the_sky/mode/2upComment too long. >>97362849>Do you think they'll ever return to normalcynever, even without UB, the people making sets today have fundamentally different values and expectations compared to the late 90s and 2000s>or is this the new normal and you'll have to deal with bugs bunny decks for as long as mtg exists?pretty much, you shouldn't expect a change in direction for at least another 5 to 10 years
Hey, remember that time Mark Rosewater lied?
>>97362558This. Kikes hate White. The old designers never did but this new crew led by Gavin all seem to have a seething deep hatred for everything White used to stand for. I wish there was a company insider who would leak memos and emails pertaining to their conspiracy to keep White weak in 60 card formats. And forced commander design hasn’t helped either.

how do I run tzaangors in thousand sons?
Every so often I ask my players if there are any kinds of adventures they want to do or sorts of situations they would like to be put into to play off of. Its how I strike a balance in the group to make sure everybody gets to have their bit of fun. This time around, two different players put down 'hostage negotiation' and 'hostage crises'. But I'm having trouble coming up with a good way to do that. This is a flintlock era adventure sort of deal, no magic on the table at all so bullshitium to force a contrivance is not an option. Obviously, most of our "hostage negotiation" tropes are based around police negotiating with some gunman making demands, but I just don't see how that realistically works in this scenario since not only do modern police not exist but what kind of demands could they even make that don't even with them shot anyway? With single-shot gunpowder weapons, if there are more guys outside than inside there's very little reason not to just storm the place, but also if the demands are met the guys is never getting out of there alive anyway. Its not like he can ask for an escape helicopter and fly away, at most he gets a horse. So what occurs to me is that the hostage and hostage taker are in an unknown location and everything is being done by written correspondence, but I'm not sure how to make that particularly interesting as an adventure either. Like, what is there for the players to actually *do* in that situation? Anyone have any good ideas for how to make this work that would actually be any fun to play?
>>97362705This could be a nice twist, and the PCs would have to come out with a way to prove the hostage didn't die because of some fuck up of their own.
But how should you do hostage elves in your setting?
>already resorting to passive aggressive bitchingkek
>>97362548Given that it's a stock image rather than pic from a bondage photoshoot, I think this is a genuine question from OP.
>>97362819It is. So far, I think that >>97362101>>97362182remains the most interesting option. Start off the session with half the team hostage and half the team not. Let them decide how they ended up in this situation in the first place, and then its up to them to resolve that. Give a ticking clock where if they don't resolve this quickly enough, a third party will get involved to exert their authority over the situation and if that happens a violent outcome becomes inevitable because the two players in custody are not *that* important. I'm on the fence regarding whether there should be NPC hostages as well or not. Perhaps their actual assignment was to rescue someone who had already been taken captive and it went sideways and the two people that scouted ahead got captured.
Is it possible?I like scifi as a genre because all the new tech that show us, but in terms of aesthetics, always looks like shit.Do you know any scifi RPG with good aesthetics? Even if it's just concepts, draws or artworks.PD: If someone is going to say 40k, I admit it has cool things, but I don't find it pleasant.
>>97337980What is "good aesthetics" to you?Is it Star Wars or Star Trek? Destiny or Warhammer 40.000?Mass Effect or Starfield?Dune or The Outer Worlds?Titanfall or Starfinder? Avatar? Killzone? You gotta give us something here, anon. Do you look for Science Fantasy? Sleek and modern? Realistic? Gritty? Over the top, stylized and exaggerated? Depending on your personal taste, each of these can either be visual Gigakino or total shit.
>>97337980right's better
>>97338463>TTRPGs aren't known for their Aesthstics because they're make-believe pretend games where all the visuals happen in your head for the most part.God I wish I had Phantasia ...
>>97347883Jesus Christ, ME looks so fucking good. Even the generic people in the lineup have subtle character to them and you can tell them apart quickly. In an era of schlocky space military games it really stood apart.
>>97338327Maybe Traveler? I haven't played it myself but I hear it's less grim than 40k.
What's your theory for why all the talent is leaving Leder Games? What’s your worst/best board game break up story?
>>97362116I dunno much about what a 'euro' entails, other than it's usually called 'dry' and methodical vs colourful and random. All I was looking for is epic scenarios, important choices and situations you'd talk about for a long time after
Is leder going to just endlessly churn root expansions now? I love Ahoy but I know it's polarizing
>>97360696>What's your theory for why all the talent is leaving Leder Games?I think Cole still wants to make insane game designs and Patrick doesn't want to fund/encourage it considering the bloodbath of 2025 in the board game industryA split that seems like both sides stay rather happy seems like the best option, but what in the fuck is Leder other than the root guys?

>>97354566>What are these radical ‘fixes’ then? I’m genuinely curious. Worst-case scenario you give us all some pointless well-worn platitudes, at best you save some lives from waste.NTA and not that radical, but here are some roughly verified platitudes that might help:>you don't need motivation, you need discipline(Motivation is an ephemeral thing and a shitty goal for the depressed, but discipline is something you can actually work at and plan. This is simply the best box set I have ever seen. I was blown away with the contents, especially the pamphlets they include, the effort and attention to detail is unmatched. I genuinely don't know how other companies compete. That being said, does anyone know what RULES I should use for the actual skirmish? It's 38 Spanish, which is a mix of line infantry and guerillas and 27 French, which are mostly elite companies, ie. voltigeurs. Is this enough for a game of Sharpe Practice?

Is FoW good? Is it fun?
>>97362613It's pretty good for a "Magic-but" I'd say. Fixes the land problem, but doesn't particularly innovate too much elsewhere. My friends and I enjoy it casually. No idea what the meta looks like these days.
>>97362369Yeah I was talking to a vanguard friend recently who keeps up with it better than I do and I just don't get why there's an energy system? It's barely vanguard now and it just didn't seem that fun, not feeling bad that I quit.Bandai games are typically better managed (only certain ones though)
>>97362613I picked it up towards the end of last year to play with some friends and it's pretty fun. There's a lot of interesting deck building you can do and I think the art can be pretty great. I'm not a fan of the card frames and the font feels kind of cheap to me. But like >>97362667 said, it's not doing a lot that's "new". I will note I tried Grand Archive around the same time, which does innovate a lot more, but I ended up like FoW's gameplay more.
>>97362405Essential for set design, imperative for the diversity of the game. Show me a game with zero archetypes and I'll show you a boardgame.

I need a new GOOD fantasy race to base a campaign region around.
The Cynocephali (The Dog-Headed)Based on the legends of St. Christopher and the accounts of Marco Polo.Sub-Race: The Saint’s Kin (The Orthodox Variant).Trait: Bark of the Word. Their barks can carry the weight of divine authority, capable of frightening demons or "howling" a prayer that bolsters allies.Sub-Race: The Desert Raiders (The African Variant).Trait: Carrion Sense. They can smell blood or decay from miles away, making them the ultimate bounty hunters of the Silk Road.Social Status: In the East, they are seen as noble guardians. In the West, they are often caught in a theological debate: Do they have souls? If they can pray, the Church allows them; if they only howl, they are hunted.
>>97339873Look at some of the more obscure yokai, like samebito.
>>97335858A race of sapient constructs is always a possibility.
>>97339873Monopods are fun too
>>97335858Fighting-ManIt's like the male version of Amazons
Tabletop RPGs tend to split up crafting into a high number of crafting subskills for every individual area of expertise. There's no question that crafting is still extremely powerful despite forcing you to go through this hassle, but what are your thoughts on which particular crafting subskills tend to be the most useful in the context of a TTRPG campaign, be it a medieval or modern or sci-fi setting?Pic related is from Legend of the Five Rings, where I'll be playing a crafter soon, and I intend to invest heavily into crafting. But feel free to talk about any game you've had experience with.
>>97362742>Crafting is based because it's the epitome of HFY in a single skill.no it isn't. Dwarves and elves are better craftsmen than humans in most popular canons.
>>97362788Dwarves and elves are just quirky humans.
>>97362793no they aren't. they're different species.
>>97362507>I have never seen a player actually dedicate time and resources into craftingNot-homebrewing-it-yourself issue. Book writers always overcomplicate crafting when ripping of Terraria is hands down the best method.
>>97362507>and I have never seen a player actually dedicate time and resources into craftingI'm playing in a D&D 3.5e table where one PC is a crafting specialist.Shit's starting to get wild with him crafting things like prosthetics arms (effectively grafts) to replace the perfectly working arms of another PC.He's also slowly turning himself into a sort of half-golem.
What can you do to make bandit encounters more immersive and interesting than the old ambush-fight shtick?

>>97360967My money is on the Painted Tribe, Dancers. The others wouldn't survive long enough to become an actual threat or would otherwise be bound. Let's see if my friends have anything to say about it.
>>97362279Probably smart, going by some files from an old caper, Wereblood is a nasty mix with Vampirism. Course it only mentions Aboms, Licks taking regular ass Wolfy vitae and assurances that it wouldn't mess with the boss' pet project that shouldn't be relevent here. Apparently nobody at this unethical pharaceutical/peteoluem shell company had the bright idea to see what drinking Abomination blood does. Or did and the fallout was so bad they scrubbed all records of the results. If that's the case, Boy Toy may get worse before he gets better. Assuming he doesn't split the difference. How's his Aura look?
>>97362385>Boy Toy may get worse before he gets better. It's why we all voted to get rid of all the abomination's vitae with the erythroexchange (hope I spelled that right, damn the Greeks) and plasma exchange, pretty much all the blood inside him is human now, and a couple drops from mom's foot, I guess. We gotta pay staff some extras this month.>How's his Aura look?I don't need an expert to know it looks like shit. Oh, he's crying too? I'll wait some more and have Assoluta sing the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde in there, then we go with Princess Charming plan.>>97362334>Hm. I've passed on the information. Let's see if my friends have anything to say about it.Thank you.
How do I get my players to stop calling everything dwarf related "digslop"?
>>97355111I have a feeling that OP (if this even real and not a larp) is acting like an obnoxious 1d4chan Dwarf-fag, so it's nothing but "knife-ear" thing and "book of grudges" that, so his players just can't take Dwarves seriously anymore.Doesn't help that its very rare to see people move away from Gimli-likes.
>>97355111Because dwarves are based and cool and should be respected like the chads they are, not reduced to a cringy reddit meme like "digslop"
>>97355111OP does not have a game or friends and is just a retarded shitposting faggot.
>>97355151>so his players just can't take Dwarves seriously anymore. But that’s the best part of playing a dwarf imo, not having to take the beards on legs so seriously
I prefer beardslop, personally. Dwarves don't have to diggy diggy hole or even live underground, but god forbid you introduce a clean-shaven one.
