They don't. Nib fucks BE.
>>
>>97252610
Most lists I am looking at on ygometa do not run Sifr/Crimson. It really is just overkill. What about the Primite package makes Sifr a must-play? If you've got the Drillbeam engine online going first, it is pretty difficult for your opponent to end the game on their first turn (even if you just have the primite engine and a few hand traps, your lure still passing turn with Drillbeam + Seal + whatever hand traps you opened, which is not amazing but also not an auto-lose first-turn)
>>
>>97252878
Literally every BE deck that has topped runs both the primite cards AND the crimson dragon package. However, if he's not running the primite cards (i assume he's using 2-3 neo kaiser and bingo machine?), and he's also NOT running the crimson dragon package, then what is the payoff of the deck? Just double spirit (that tags out into ultimate spirit and moonlight/lightstorm) or spirit + seals? Brick-eyes gets raped by nibiru either way, might as well go for the giga board that crimson dragon facilitates.

A budget list (no primite) always wants the crimson dragon engine, because its most minimal endboard is bad compared to a primite one, drillbeam does make all the difference. I'm genuinely not sure what exactly is stopping him from running it, because all the cards got reprinted this year, meaning they're cheap. Sifr is the most expensive and it costs about 3 burgers.

Magia obviously.

GURPS

GURPS. Alternatively, any other system that is capable of handling dismemberment, combat, wide array of skills and travel well. Hell, you can homebrew D&D and it'll be exactly that.

maps and mapmaking. more specifically, there's something that's been bothering me for a while now. There are endless skirmish-scale settlement-scale and topographic-scale square grid mapmaking tools online, and that's great.
There's plenty of topography-scale hexgrid mapmakers too, presumably because of D&D's ancient use of hexgrids for overland travel. and that's great too.
There arent many hexmakers ive found for settlement scale maps, but i've had some luck torturing them out of the battletech mapmaker in the megamek software, or other videogames that generously offer to print the output
but
for the life of me i cannot find a decent skirmish-scale hexgrid mapmaker. i must have tried a dozen programs by now, but the ones that offer hexgrids are either borderline unuseable or just put a hexagonal overlay over a square grid. it's ridiculous that after decades of computer tools for TTRPGS the best i've found is GIMP where i have to draw the damn things by hand. Not to mention the endless enshitification of google makes it harder and harder to find niche programs to match what i need.

what are you anons using to create your maps?
do you know of any decent skirmish-scale hexmappers (that are free, or at least worth the price)?
what do you think of maps in general, do you even use them?

i'll share any spare maps i have within the size limit to get the ball rolling

These schools of thought about dungeon design have never sat right with me.

For jayquasing/xandering, there's no structure or intent behind them. its just a list of design elements you could theoretically include to stop your dungeon being a straight line. It's useful to have an exhaustive list, but not really worth having a name for because its basically just the idea of "my dungeon shouldnt be a straight line" and from there most if not all the techniques are self-evident

The five room dungeon is "better" in that it's at least a narrative framework to inform dungeon design, but it's only perscriptive of a single design philosophy not descriptive of the full scope of potential design approaches. It's also completely useless for when you need to actually put a pen to paper.
>room 1 is the entrance, and the challenge is related to getting inside
gee thanks, i really needed help figuring that out. besides, only amateurs put traps in the first room.

then there are things like melan diagrams that lack objectivity, cannot account for backtracking, conditional paths or obstacles, and are totally uninformative to actual design.

and as a final dig, none of these touch on dynamism in dungeons. dungeon-as-an-ecosystem has been popular lately, but even something as basic as a roaming monster is ignored. these ideas are 20 years old by now and game design has advanced a lot, its time we started setting these aside and researching a unified theory of dungeon-space
>>
>>97251676
ok. i really just wanted to talk about level design in concrete way and we have a shared vocabulary for it that you are obviously familar with that we can use. I just want to talk about why good maps are good maps. Like the dungeon i made and posted here >>97247344 has wandering monsters and while not pictured stairs ladders a subfloor 3 entrances and i'm still probably going to redesign it to make the statue room bigger as there is scaffolding in there that a boss will use to hide as she throws menacingly massive mechanical monstrosities to mega murder my merry mercenaries. Dynamism and ecosytems are importat to dungeon design, not something seperate. In your opinion what are some good exmaples of dynamism in dungeons I'd love getting into it? Dungeon as an ecosystem is also awesome Dungeon Meshi did a great example of that in my opinion.

well i want to bitch and moan about outdated analytical and design tools!

this map is a good example
i designed it to spite most tools and to reject most points of design philosophy
>Melan diagram
excluding single rooms and redundant loops, this entire map is reductively a single straight line with maybe one branching path
>jayquasing
there are two enterences (main door and brooken roof of the den) but otherwise...
no elevation changes, sub-levels, branching paths, loop-backs, sub-spaces or warps, sub-dungeons, midpoint entries or hidden paths. it relies entirely... on dynamism.

>some bandits have been operating out of this ruined structure (based in the den, which they have sealed)
>it is actually an undead settlement, who they are exploiting to defend their base
>the inner ring cannot be accessed without taking the key from the guardian in it's chamber
>the undead if alerted by themselves or the bandits will rally their full force (barring those locked in the inner ring), leading to an unwinnable fight and forced retreat from the hideout

Why were so many of the "OG" game designers insufferable faggots? It seems like the vast majority of game designers from the 70s and 80s were self-obsessed dickheads who openly hated and looked down on their customer base. There were obviously exceptions, and some like Gygax would go on to regret and apologize for it, but still, what made so many "professionals" back then such fags?

>2) What does your character do on a Sunday?
Sundays don't exist in the setting
>3) What was the best birthday gift the character received?
Birthdays don't exist in the setting since it's not set in the 19th century or later northwestern hemisphere.
>4) What does the character think about the policies of the mayor/leader of the community?
Considering that he is the leader of his nomadic tribe he thinks they are ok. Definitely some room for improvement though. Since he got most of them killed.
>5) What is the character's handwriting like?
He doesn't know how to read or write.
>6) What is the character's favorite color?
Gold.
>7) What tics does the character have when they need to sit still for a while?
He is not an anxiety riddled zoomie so none.

Based. Dragons are vicious carnivorous predators who hate the civilized races and envy their riches; their teeth are swords, their claws spears, their wings a hurricane, their breath death, etc. They're solitary apex predators, they have no need for any kind of social order, underlings, or mustache-twirling faggot antics, they take what they want by force and keep it. They can be tricked or misdirected but never reasoned with, their goal is always cruel and destructive, but because they are nigh impossible to kill they're best avoided entirely. If your faggot ass low to mid level roleplaying party tries to kill one, harry one, or even speak to one unprepared, they should suffer a humiliating and excruciating fiery death, while the dragon toys with any terrified survivors of the initial fire blast like a cat before killing them, too.

>never reasoned with
Doesn't Bilbo manage to reason with Smaug at least semi-successfully? Yes he considers any mortal affairs totally beneath him but he does have a huge ego and is vulnerable to bargaining and especially flattery. I read the book a long time ago so I can't promise I'm not misremembering.

And yes of course Smaug does quickly see through the flattery but that's because Bilbo actually was trying to steal from him.
>>
>>97253010
He misleads him, very briefly as you described, and then Smaug quickly sorties out, tries to find and kill the dwarves, fails to find them and so burns or eats most of their ponies so they can't escape the Lonely Mountain, and then flies off to Laketown just to fuck shit up, intending to return and root them out and torture them to death immediately after. The dorfs and Bilbo would've been completely fucked if there wasn't Deux Ex Machina Man, descendant of the King of Dale, with a never-before-mentioned Super Special Magic Macguffin Arrow, who talked to a fucking bird to learn Smaug's weakpoint and then was lucky enough to land a perfect instakill shot with said arrow. Weakest part of an otherwise perfect story. I don't think Tolkien wrote himself into a corner, I think he just wanted to find some way to involve Men in the Battle of the Five Armies, as if a mountain full of fucking gold wasn't motivation enough.
But TLDR no, he doesn't reason with Smaug at all, and if he hadn't had the ring during their brief exchange, he'd have been a pile of ashes.
>>
>>97253085
It's true that Bilbo only survives through remaining unseen and Smaug would have gladly killed him if given the opportunity, but my point is that dragons, especially those lesser than Smaug, aren't stupid and could respect the power of dangerous rivals and negotiate, at least until they found a way to take the said power for themselves.

>>
>>97249278
I don’t play or read about Warhammer. What happens to chaos dwarfs? Is being stone a good thing?
>>
>>97195417
No they don't.
>>
>>97252435
Normally Dwarfs in Warhammer can't wield magic at all because they were made so by the Old Ones (in part because they wanted them resistant to Chaos). Dwarfs however created Rune Magic that is a bypass for them and their inability to use magic.

Chaos Dwarfs however can use magic because they were granted it by their own Chaos God Hashut after they abandoned their traditions and Ancestor Gods for pragmatism in order to survive all the shit that was falling on them in the Dark Lands. When they did embrace him and changed over the generations, they got their magics (including the Lore of Hashut which is unique only to them).
Problem is, and it was mentioned before, that Dwarfs were not build to wield magic. And the more their Daemonsmits and Sorcerer Prophets use their powers and channel the Winds of Magic the more they turn into stone.
And no, being turned into a stone sculpture IS NOT a good thing for them (in fact it's not good for anyone). In fact the main temple of Hashut in Zharr-Nagrund has the main road to it decorated with stone sculptures that uses to be Daemonsmiths and Sorcerer Prophets that succumbed to the stone curse.
