Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

right, started fiddling around with appendix A today and came up with a first floor.
also went by the method suggested here to get some ideas
>https://youtu.be/lk_5gNe0oSs
the main ideas I came up with are -
old not!roman fort & villa, villa now populated by crazy guy that believes he's the local administrator & his seemingly tamed basilisk. he will demand taxes if the party talks to him and will be friendly if they comply. he has a statue garden in his yard and is secretly allied with the goblins on floor 1, his villa has a passage to their area of the dungeon.
the main dungeon is in the keep, it's walls melted by dragon fire long ago and fused them to make a giant bowl like structure that is now mostly flooded.
ruins of main keep lead to first level, home to goblins and tomes of previous inhabitants (now undead)
second floor will house hobgoblin area, they got access to the still standing tower and an old MU fused with mushrooms on the top floor. also maybe some frog man in flooded caves?
3rd floor will have a dragon cult trying to awake a petrified dragon egg, a few apprentices sent by the wizard in the local tower to investigate this place (now hiding in on of the rooms after suffering grave loses) and a golem guarding a vault

>Big question is what scale are your hexes?
six miles, as they are (roughly) to scale with irl england
>including some area outside the top to explore and figure out which entrance to use
thanks for that, helped me come up with the mansion idea
>Have you seen this blog post and/or this video?
I watched the video before but haven't seen the blog. I did read it and it does clear some things up, I'll rethink the points of interest after finishing the dungeon

>D&D kind of expects your game to be set in 19th or even 18th century America but with medieval trappings, not anything like the actual medieval Europe which was populated out the ass.

thankfully Eidolon's only desire are caring for my needs and desires. And with the inspiration perk giving her the effects of Invictus there are no external means of mind controlling her. I wouldn't know how to go about getting other powers that don't have inbuilt bias towards you to be loyal outside the long hard way.

>Found out The Protomen Act III: This City Made Us finally finished earlier this month, a few days ago
>Been thinking about the ending nonstop.
>Mega Man is still fucked off in his tent like Achilles
>Some random girl who is neither confirmed nor denied to be Roll urges her small army not to give up the fight against Wiley and argues with Light. Girl finds Mega Man but he tells her to fuck off, girl throws his helmet at him in frustration
>Light gives her Mega Man's address, then fucks off to assault Wiley's fortress like the Don't Fear The Reaper ending In Cyberpunk 2077
>Wiley himself is buttblasted the rebels are hiding out in the south side of the city where apparently his army can't reach and drinking heavily. By the time Light hacks drones, infiltrates his fortress and generally action movie heroes his way to his lair, Wiley is having a full-on existential crisis about whether he should've turned on that machine at all. The entire Protomen saga culminates in a fucking Liquid Snake-style knife fight between two old men that ends with Light trying to convince him to turn off the machine with Emily's music box, and Wily having his robot guards beat the shit out of him in a fit of rage
>Then it all ends with Light being publicly executed like he merely imagined in Act II, though not before he sees a flash of blue in the crowd-and the final song confirmed Mega Man does rejoin the fight
Well goddamn, that's a bittersweet takeaway. Anyone take that drawback in the Mega Man Classic jump?

How would you humanize enemy mooks even if the players have to put them down at the end of day? How do you make it so that players leaving piles of corpses in their wake is not a trivial matter?

Logically, they would have to just leave everyone alone beyond being the new tax collectors because otherwise they would have to kill 80% of each planet refusing to live like clan laborers, some of the most impoverished, mistreated humans in history according to in-universe accounts. But the actual writing is extremely inconsistent and nonsensical so you might as well make up your own headcanon since there isn't even a canon consensus.

Honestly, it's difficult to find a "victory scenario" for the Blakists in the Jihad after it starts. It's simply badly written in such a way that it's almost impossible to make a coherent "final objective". Victory conditions for the Blakists are pre-Jihad:
> Second Star League endures, Protectorate and Periphery States are in
> All the IS recognizes the Clans are a major problem and organize Bulldog 2.0
> The MD/"hidden divisions" are revealed, used as a spearhead against the Clans and sent in a one-way trip to genocide the Homeworlds
> After Clans are dead a new Star League rises again, with the WoBbies as "benevolent" overseers of a united Inner Sphere

But again, it's such a badly written mess (despite the WoBbies being great) that it's difficult to fix.

Do you have a makerspace around you? 120mm square is a whole lotta suction, even tilted (which you need to do, unfortunately; I don't think you get into build plates that go that wide until you're talking about high end prosumer stuff). And you're easily burning a couple bucks of resin a shot.

So my DND group was kind of disolving, 2 out of the 4 players left because of life issues (one got a job abroad and the other one is dealing with life), to keep playing we incorporated 2 new players with not so much experience but avid watchers of Critical Role.

One of these player conditions was that we incorporate x cards to the game, she says that it makes it much more comfortable for her to know she can avoid unpleasant story elements having this tool.

I started to read a bit about it online and is this something you guys have used? In my 20 years playing I've never used this.

I need help with something for a game. How do people know stories about astartes, sisters of battle, guardsman, etc? They don't usually work around civilian areas. Are there comic books, dramas, or whatever? Where do people get their info about them? I want write up stories about a astartes chapter that is in a near by system but how much accurate info would civilians have about the activities of Space Marines?
>>
>>97384894
Space marines are mythical to the average man. There may be statues of them or the primarchs and legends told, but that is about it for the average joe. SoB and guardsmen are far more common since one is a part of the ecclesiarchy and the other is just off-world military service. It is extraordinarily rare for someone to see a space marine and their presence usually means there is something of worth for them to fight or just shit that needs purging. Either way, it should generally not be a pleasant time.
>>
>>97383322
It's genuinely crazy what you can accomplish with a group of friends willing to talk things out. The other day I mentioned to another GM that I currently had a space marine mixed in with my RT party without problem and he simply couldn't wrap his head around the idea that it worked because... the actual, real world person was trustworthy and onboard with the party dynamic. He liked the idea of playing a circumspect guy somewhat uncomfortable with the regular human camaraderie, and for whom the idea of threatening or intimidating his allies just didn't connect - why would he need to state or imply something that was so painfully obvious? The other GM just couldn't accept that it could be done by any other way than harsh rulings from on high, which is sadly the default of most GMs I've met.
>>
>>97381536
That is utterly fucked up, man. What the hell was even the draw for it to them? Did they want to be primarysue marines or something? There's nothing else post-rift that would even affect the game, even if they wanted to play in dark imperium you can just localize it to somewhere in way the fuck away boonies beyond the Astronomican's light. These places exist, we know they do - they're the only reason Macharius' crusade stalled out.
>>97383983
Not quite so. The issue is that they've done such a great job abandoning everything 40k used to be in exchange for mass-market appeal that the majority is now composed of people who heard about it on tiktok and never bothered to learn what a Rogue Trader is - and of those people, the ones who want to learn more look first to the Heresy series, which is a steaming pile of dogshit.
>>
>>97384894
>Are there comic books, dramas, or whatever
In the 41st millennium, most marine-related info comes in the form of scripture, propaganda, state-sanctioned histories, legends, and the occasional memorial. In 30k, the remembrancer order had a variety of different artistic types producing works to glorify the Legions--historians, photographers, playwrights, poets, composers, architects, sculptors, painters, and even a comic book artist (see Fear to Tread).

Different Chapters also interact differently with the common people. Some might be distant and aloof sky warriors who only show up to abduct the most worthy warriors of the local tribes every few years. Some might be actively involved in their home realm's communities and governance.

Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!

Amerindians have less genetic diversity than other populations due to the bottleneck; basically, imagine there being 100 different "locks" against diseases in Eurasiafrica, and only 3 in the Americas. A disease adapted to Eurasian populations can get into Amerindian ones, but not vice versa. It will infect people (indeed, when people showed up in America, they tended to get sick as they were exposed to every new disease simultaneously), but it doesn't form the basis for a pandemic like smallpox.

As for Africa, "Eurasian" diseases like smallpox were already present there, because it was physically connected. However, the mainstay "African" diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness are born by parasites like mosquitos and the tsetse fly, and thus can't "leave." (Well, Italy used to be a malarial zone, but you know what I mean.)

I want to incorporate a catholic splinter movement into what I want to do, but I cannot for the love of me come up with something that feels original. I want to make their beliefs interesting.
As of now, all that occurs to me is that they could believe Mary is Jesus' literal Equal (taking the Mediatrix and Coredemptrix stuff to the next level), Victim souls are official dogma, and they believe in Thaumaturgy. But all of this is basically just exaggeration of what splinter catholics believe. The only things missing are having a fake pope and being sedevacantist. Another idea I came up with is that it could be all but run by 'nuns' (not actually ordained), but I fear that would be leaning too much onto the woman angle.
Can you guys provide me with some feedback? Some other niche catholic religious concepts are also much appreciated.
>>
>>97386327

In the case of Americans, because Eurasia concentrates the grand majority of urban populations AND the majority of domesticated animals. Zoonotic are relatively rare because the jump of a diseases from species to species is a low probability event. But you massively increase the chances of that happening in places with a lot of domesticated animals and population concentrations:

Smallpox
Tuberculosis
Typhus
Cholera
Influenza
Measles
Mumps
Black Death

These are history's biggest killers, and they ALL come from the Old World and a most of them come from animal domestication. Cows alone is responsible for measles, tuberculosis and smallpox. For cows these diseases are like cold for us, no big deal. But things that make a cow a little sick makes humans very sick or deadly.
>>
>>97386638

The reason these were a "cold" for many Europeans but a death sentence for Native Americans was natural selection. Because these diseases had been circulating in Eurasia for centuries due zoonotic diseases from animal domestication (no cows, pigs, horses, sheep, and goat in America), those who survived them passed on some level of genetic resistance or antibodies to their children.

When these germs reached the Americas, the population had zero prior exposure, leading to "virgin soil epidemics" where mortality rates often reached 80% to 90%.

Smallpox killed a third of the population in virgin soil epidemics, including in Iceland. Evolutionary impact on immunity is quite muted, even for high-lethality endemic diseases; acquired immunity (exposure earlier in life) is mostly what does it.

We have all experienced the coming and going so GMs, Players and games; and then left holding the bag too start all over again at Square One.
If and when you have to start over from scratch how and where (online) would you start I'll look for groups and games?
There has been numerous reasons that would force someone to start all over again be it scheduling, life, work, people changing.

I'd find a dungeon crawler board game and a case of beer and 3-4 well adjusted fun people with good hygeine
>>
>>97349305
I play with my friends rather than randos, so I've never had to experience this and likely won't ever have to experience this since all of my friends have lives and work jobs and we play around their schedules.

If I ever reached that point I'd probably just drop the hobby all together, because I'm not here for MUH COMMUNITY or MUH HOBBY or whatever collectivist garbage you faggots whine about, I'm here to play a game with my friends.

>Not having friends
What's it like being a miserable misanthrope?
>>
Start over in current year? I don't. I take one look at the low quality garbage that focuses entirely on pandering and realize its not a good hobby.
>>
>>97350211
Only if you are friendless loser that any actual table would vet out right before even meeting for the first game. Which is part of the reason why nobody sane wants to play online - the only players out there are (You)s

Unironically Critical Role, get hyped, join a game, isn't what I expected, learn to love it anyway: Is how I think it would go.

Just fucking release a box of like 20 MK7 helmets. They are clearly making them.

So if I'm playing corsairs why would I want to take generic Legionaires when I can take the much cooler Raiders?
>>
>>97386355
I don't think Raiders can take heavy weapons like lascannons, autocannons, etc.
>>
>>97384935

I dunno anon, I think it kinda needs to be you who's blind? The copied homework of the mark 10 helmet is unmistakeable.
>>
>>97386476
You could still use Raiders as Legionaries, I guess
I'm considering just using the regular Legionaries with powerpacks and helmets from tactical marines and scrapping all the chaos iconography
>>
>>97386355
looks like Raiders kit will come with only 5 dudes (10 dudes in the battleforce but only 5 sculpts for bodies) so their point cost is almost certainly closer to chosen and other elite infantry models than to legionaries

I was diving in the archives and discovered this thing that /tg/ made a long time ago. Catgirls + an underwater world. It looks like the project withered away and everyone involved left this board ten or so years ago.

So, how was it? Did it ever get off the ground?

You are retarded and I have 3 points to show how
1)The above situation
2)Why would someone bother making a dud? It's extra work and you have more than enough vests.
3)>imblyign

>it is simply slowly becoming mainstream
You act like that's a good thing. Probably BECAUSE you're a fairweather mainstream tourist.
>think of how much you get now.
And it's all shit because there's no passion. It's just grifter faggots looking for a quick jewtube buck.

Man I wasn't around back then because moot was a massive faggot was actively killing the site it the few years before he sold it to Hiroshima Nagasaki, mods were fags moot met at SxSW who hated us. There was a war between anons and goons and moot is a goon not an anon.
