Arson is pretty bad vs people who live in trees and can't go to the ground to e.g. build firebreaks. Also, the Linowan have Dragonblood and the Realm. This whole thing is, to some extent, two big local nations both supported by foreign supernatural predators stuck in a forever war.

That said, you're not wrong.
>>
>>97367353
Realm's support matters a lot, of course, but I doubt the Realm would be willing to commit enough troops to a fairly distant part of the world to stop Haltans from using that standing army of theirs - which must be the largest in Creation - from stopping Linowan arson once and for all. I like the overall idea of a thriving civilization in the trees, but the way Halta is presented in Kingdom of Halta and CoTD: East is so exaggerated that it almost feels like a parody of that idea. I'd be all for toning Halta down a bit - a bit, not too much, they should still have proper cities in the trees, just maybe not one as big as the Imperial City - and also giving the Linowan a bit more of an edge of their own. 3E kind of does do the former, I think, though it doesn't really provide population numbers.

Yeah they kind of take up the north-east mindspace for the setting thanks to how expansive they are
>>
>>97367078

2e Halta was nuts. I have no idea why the devs decided they should get the maximum wank treatment.
>>
>>97367429
>>97367645
In fairness in terms of land-space they are about as big as the Blessed Isle, and they have managed to tame it's dangers and pull in supernatural defenders on a similar level as the Realm's Dragonblood with Sidereal backer paradigm, just fewer of them. The population of their capital is about the size of the Imperial City and their total population is about as big as the Blessed Isle's. The Realm's military is... like a third to a half, I think, with it's score or so legions of ~10-20k legionnaires? In terms of manpower. In effect they're stronger but have to put out ten fires to Halta's one.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

...cont

Having another parallel group can also lead to interesting things:
>More organic* rumors for players to investigate
>More eagerness to be the "first" to do things/discover places/etc
>The world would feel more alive/less centered on the players (again, a WM trademark)
At end of day, I feel like the concept of having a parallel group playing on the same world is in itself a different gimmick that can be tons of fun. To know there's more people out there experience that world, and that the things you do on your session affects the world even beyond your group

Though in my mind, the LGS group would be the "official" group, and I would probably limit my friends to a 1/month session, or 2 tops (LGS is scheduled to be every other week). I would also occasionally invite my friends to the LGS group to have more interconnection between the groups

But in the end of day, the aspect of having the LGS as the "official" group is important to me, which is why I might reset the map after the test session and start fresh for next week's first "official" session

NentirVale anon here. In my campaign, I had a house rule that a long rest could only be taken in a safe and civilized place, where the PCs weren't on watch. Home base, a cozy inn, a guarded outpost, etc. Everything outside of that counted as a short rest, by 5e rules.

Tabletop RPGs tend to split up crafting into a high number of crafting subskills for every individual area of expertise. There's no question that crafting is still extremely powerful despite forcing you to go through this hassle, but what are your thoughts on which particular crafting subskills tend to be the most useful in the context of a TTRPG campaign, be it a medieval or modern or sci-fi setting?

Pic related is from Legend of the Five Rings, where I'll be playing a crafter soon, and I intend to invest heavily into crafting. But feel free to talk about any game you've had experience with.

Do you include seasonal changes in your campaigns when time goes by?

If so, what do you implement int the world to showcase the changing seasons?

I personally include sea raiders who begin assaults on the kingdom's shores in spring and through summer, who then return to their homeland in fall to winter it out. So essentially a raiding season for my world's vikings, like in real history.

I used to roll up planets with GURPS Space for fun, and even the marginally habitable ones were absolute hellworlds.
I can't find my notes right now, but one was basically only liveable at the equator and it was so hot (water planet with primitive algae producing oxygen) and the axial tilt so massive that any change of seasons would probably bring insane storms. I figured the inhabitants would probably live in above ground bunkers you could raise with hydraulics in case of flooding

Older (as in early 2000s and earlier) RPGs had the frequent presence of what I call the "four edgy horsemen": Rape, Slavery, Torture (including human sacrifice), and Prostitution (including monsters that pretend to be promiscuous women). While not being as tone ruining as just including the word nigger (since that has no reason to exist in a roleplaying game unless the game is either comedic or set in a modern setting), all 4 of the edgy horsemen have effectively been blacklisted from modern RPG design, despite all of them being common in the fantasy works that inspired TTRPGs, and all of them being necessary components of a believable medieval world.
>>
I'm really tempted to ask the garth-defending (despite apparently never hearing of him), bible-hating redditor what country he's from but we all know he'd never answer sincerely
in any case, people itt have pretty much mentioned all edgy tabletops in existence. thread done.
>>
>>97368230
To clarify, by "presence" I don't necessarily mean that there were explicit mechanics for them, but that removing them from the lore of the game would noticeable leave plot holes. For example, some monsters might originate from implied humanoid rape/explicit parasite rape, or some monsters practice slavery/torture which is the main reason why they have captives, or a class (in Arduin) is called the Courtesan. And by "blacklisted", I mean that if you even slightly allude to monster girl rape (the relatively safe but still not fully safe pairing), in a homebrew race on a site known for unbalanced content, a eunuch-esque youtuber will screech about how gross and weird that is even though 3e's incubi (dragon magazine 353) were much more explicit about what they did, even having mechanics for how much damage they do from rape (and it's good that 3e was willing to be this edgy).
