What makes a setting don't feel generic a.k.a. not DnD?
>>97191156Death being permanent and brutal. I shocked an open table I DMed by killing a party member even though I said to bring a backup character. Newer players have likely never had a character death.
>>97196399You are a fucking moron. Read the OP again, but slower this time, until you understand what this thread is about before you regurgitate your teenaged nonsense again.
>>97196414Having a gritty setting not afraid to kill it's main characters is a good example of a non-generic setting tho
>>97196433I don't think you understand what a setting is. Setting is the world that the game takes place in. The land, the history, the religions and cultures and cities and major factions and characters. What you are describing is game tone. Thats a setting agnostic quality. I can make a meatgrinder kill-em-all one shot in literally any setting, from 40k to He-Man. If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.
>>97196479>If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.Well I could've brought up that it takes place in a world inspired by the Bronze Age Collapse but I've found that most players don't care about lore or setting. Tone will stick with them more than setting.
GW kept mentioning space marines or even primarchs coupling with regular human women and it always took me out of it. Like how the fuck? Wouldn't she get ripped in half? But then it dawned on me. They just have tiny penises. Well not by human standards, but relative to body-size. Like think about it, why would you supersize the dick too when there literally do not exist women big enough to handle that size? So the simplest explanation is they just keep the penis size of a regular human.

Moloch's Fun Park Edition>What is Trench Crusade? An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.>What Trench Crusade is notTC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.>What's the QRD on the background? The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.>How do I get started? All the files are free online:https://www.trenchcrusade.com/rules/Comment too long. Why the official books are so thin in lore and art?
>>97195717There is only one official book and 50% of it is lore, I don't know how you could expect more.
>>97196351NTA. Its easy to forget that, since its lore that we already know. With some changes. I kind of expected lot of new stuff, which there is in the book, but lot of stuff I've already read.

What is it about? Why is it interesting? Should I care about it?
>>97133885>What is it about?Dungeons and also some dragons >Why is it interesting? It's O.G>Should I care about it?Honestly, if you want to get into an old school setting you should go with Mystara. Whole planet + hollow earth with great maps that is still supported by fans to this day. File sizes too large to post here but check Atlas of Mystara. Old settings like these were just a jumping off point for the DM. Do not try to keep them 100% lore accurate. Get the maps and the general feel then change whatever you want.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97196244you're right, i suppose it's backwards. i do that thing where i take the wording of thief abilities literally. when people say thieves start out underpowered...they can climb SHEER surfaces the vast majority of the time, that's absolutely insane on its own.i think of it more in book terms than in movie terms. the visuals/physics/mechanics of it don't matter so much, it's like a legend where the legendary thief Horatio Moneybags IV scaled the Tower of the Giraffe. cool.but something about hobbits...i dunno. just don't like it. odd inclusion.
Hey everyone, finally getting into the OSR and bought those nice looking green cover reprints of 2e PHB, DMG and MM plus the Birthright box. Anything else I need?
>>97196295I too dislike hobbits included as a standard fantasy race. Elves and dwarves find their origin (differing as they do from ol' JRRT) in myth, much like many npc races and monsters. But hobbits feel so signature to LotR that they seem out of place to me. Not only that, but their nature needed to be changed drastically, from fat village folk who fear anything or anyone unusual, to something more likely to spur them on to adventure. The hobbits from the books were extra exceptional, and would probably level cap at 4.

>>97196165Aren't the only decent elements of Ahsoka the parts with Baylan Skoll (RIP Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati anyway? Definitely can't be anything about the titular character.
>>97196310Boyega as a person behaved like an idiot, mostly after TLJ.Finn, the character he played, was wasted in TLJ and TRoS after being set up as something at least a bit interesting in TFA.In the end, it all comes down to the godfawful writing of TLJ.TFA wasn't a great foundation,. but it was something. >>97181931>It's not got anything egregiously bad about itEven ignoring plotholes and conveniences in the film, the entire premise makes no senseSomehow the republic that the heroes had just hard fought to achieve isn't interfering with the neo empire and is irrelevant? Somehow Luke alone can fix everything even though he was basically irrelevant in the battle for the second death star after the rebels had infiltrated it? It's just as bad as the other sequel movies.

In my current VtM game, I've got a oWoD diehard and a guy who primarily got into WoD via VtR and nWoD before settling back on VtM. The two of them talking has made me notice how your entry point into the setting seems to permanently color your perception of it.VtM guy...>Sees the setting as being about individuals doing things- he did, she did>Lots of focus on humanity, trying to cling to it, regain it, make it into a path, so on>Tends to be somewhat dismissive of the metaplot beyond a character hook or twoVtR guy...>Sees the setting as basically just supernatural politics- the Camarilla did, the Sabbat did>Your splat just determines where you fit in, but it's very "dry">Any mysticism is just another scam, as well as alternatives>You wanted to be human, you should have killed yourself yesterday>An odd tendency to refer to things as ascended fanonWhat's interesting to me is that they both openly prefer oWoD and play it near exclusively, but this has got me thinking about how similar VtR guy is to other people I've met. Stereotypes by splat is one thing, but some people seem to just carry assumptions from their first system forward into infinity. Any other traits I've missed or for other splats?

Hrm. How would fa/tg/uys handle a PC that the player wants to play as a former war criminal? So according to my player his character did a lot of heinous shit during the war that ended about 10 years ago, but is now haunted by these terrible memories. The player is asking me for game mechanics to apply to this and I'm a little stumped. Some advice from you guys would be most welcome. On my own bat I figured since this is a fantasy world getting actually attacked by the ghosts of his victims would be appropriate, but I do I really want to give him the opportunity to kill them twice?
