Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? >>97398493>I feel like showing the illustrations when instructed kind of gives the game away very quickly.Yes and no. If you read the descriptions and look at the illustrations of the various items, you'll probably notice that they're deliberately created to trick people into misidentifying them on the basis of their familiarity with Star Trek and such, so they take the devices' functions for granted and zap themselves in the face with lasers. The illustrations showing the players that they're clearly onboard a flying saucer are part of the setup for these other illustrations with which to mislead them.
>>97398065if you are the anon and not samefagging, do NOT read the "n00b guide"The document as a whole pushes a skewed, innacurate view of the OSR, was written by someone who's clearly biased towards AD&D/OSRIC to an unhealthy degree, and is also a hitpiece on anything not outside of the authors narrow one true wayism.
>>97398769I find his attempted explanations as to why his one way is supposed to be "the true way" funny though. There's so much left on the table, like he's desperately begging people not to raise any questions. He's such a cart-before-horse thinker that everything he wrote can be summed up as "This is how I personally started playing and I've never questioned anything beyond that first impression." Like those guys who argue that [thing that was realeased when they were twelve years old] is objectively the greatest [thing] of all time.
>>97398835It is quite funny, especially since he goes out of his way to get any threads that ARE NOT the highly specifically worded hijacked OP (like this thread) deleted! he mass reports it, goes into the thread, and announces reporting/saging (all the while projecting his actions onto us by screaming "Hijack!")It reeks of deranged autism, and honestly its funny as he thinks he /owns/ this thread.sooner or later things will go back to normal, regular threads wont be deleted and this troll will fuck off. just wait em out. at least this hijacked thread contains him for now

Is Warhammer 40,000 actually a misandrist/female supremacist setting? I'm just thinking about how every apparent accomplishment of the setting's major male players was actually done by a woman behind them e.g. the Emperor and Erda, Vect and Lady Malys, Angron and Lotara Sarrin, the High Lords of Terra and Morven Vahl, etc. etc.

>>97398682Mythos was somewhat popular in the 90s. After that fantasy flight made a card game for Call of Cthulhu that later became an LCG then it died.Nowadays Arkham Horror is the most popular Cthulhu mythos game.It is an LCG that every player picks an investigator and makes a deck for it. The game mix board(card as locations)+miniatures(or tokens for the investigators) with action&equipment cards (things that your investigator uses). The game is players vs environment (mythos deck) where you pick an adventure and the deck for it play the hole of antagonists and challenges for the players. The game also has a campaign like mode where adventures are connected and players carry over things from one adventure to the next until they finish the storyline.

>>97396471>One example being how rogue's sneak attack doesn't work on undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures"That was good actually>undead campaignOnce you realize you’re in an “undead campaign”, why would you not take features / multiclass / purchase magic items that help you mitigate that? It’s on the player if they’re fighting an army of volcano dragons and they go out of their way to get a flametongue and learn firestorm>firing arrows from hiding to get advantage is pretty easyThis is more an opinion, but that’s an exceedingly boring way to play, regardless of its effectiveness
>>97397933I’ve already had plenty of experience with enspelled weapons and the horrid gameplay they almost always bring. There’s a reason they’re actually banned in Adventurer’s League.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sb3eb36JhqQ&pp=ygURRW5zcGVsbGVkIHdlYXBvbnPSBwkJTwoBhyohjO8%3D
>>97398944>That was good actuallyHaving it be blanket by creature type is weird. Zombies are notorious for dying to headshots, and so a Rogue precisely hitting one in the face with a crossbow should absolutely work. The existence of damage rolls by themselves already imply that any monster can be hit in a way that does more or less damage. >It’s on the player if they’re fighting an army of volcano dragons and they go out of their way to get a flametongue and learn firestormProblem is that some classes don't really have an alternative. A Wizard or a Cleric can just prepare different spells. A Rogue can't just take a rest and suddenly get a new damage-dealing feature to replace sneak attack that enemies aren't arbitrarily immune to.
>>97396650Assuming your new to gming - the solution here is simply to break character and tell them that there’s nothing there after they poke at it a bit. Generally dropping the illusion isn’t preferred, but it’s much more conducive to fun gameplay (the ultimate goal) than four people sitting around as the fifth hears “no” over and over again, and slowly wanting to kill him. Just a simple “It’s a wall, that’s it guys” resolves the problem
>>97399030The fighter can apparently just hit them harder with power attack but oh no can't get them in a vulnerable area lmao3.5 was fucking retarded in so many ways. I liked a lot of what they did but I just couldn't go back. 4e is where sneak attack worked against all enemies and thank fuck.

>>97398780While my dogs were busy getting mulched by the shugengan lord and his stupid deer-dragon-horse mount and my daemon prince was obliterating the sky lantern with a constant barrage of magic missiles, my chaos warrior death star, which had taken heavy losses from both the sky lantern's shooting and cannon fire, made a stand on the hill in the center of the board and got double-charged by a unit of jade lancers and the sentinel. Ormos rolled a six on the Cackling Blade's attack roll twice in a row, taking two wounds as a result, and proceeded to peel the jade lancer champion like a potato in a single round of combat before proceeding to annihilate the rest of the unit alongside his fellow slaves to darkness. Quorthon continued his streak of somehow failing to do the one thing he exists to do and barely managed to eke out a single casting of Daemonic Vigour. You continue to fail me, Quorthon. Perhaps a new sorcerer ought to take the reins. Anyway, though the jade lancers were slain to a man, the sentinel was pushed back without suffering a single wound. Said sentinel would proceed to get charged by my forsaken next turn, who attacked the giant statue eighteen times and somehow managed to inflict not a single wound on it, and stomped all five of the pathetic fools to a fine paste in a single round of combat. This catastrophic failure would result in the sentinel overrunning into my chariot, which obviously did not go well and was a sign that I was quickly losing control of the game.
>>97398828My knights fought valiantly against the shuggy-wuggy-whateverthefuckit'scalled, but despite charging the perfidious cathayan half-dragon with their lances they only managed to inflict a single wound. I don't want to complain too much right now, but why does this thing get to have better saves, more wounds, better spell lores and better army lore spells (that it doesn't have to pay a tax to take) than a daemon prince for way less points? The jade warriors were there too and they provided enough static CR to force my knights to flee, which resulted in said knights getting pursued, caught, and executed. While this was happening the sentinel smashed my chariot to bits and Quorthon miraculously survived two cannon shots without taking a single wound. He may be a complete failure as a sorcerer, worthless in melee, and very ugly, but clearly the gods love him.
>>97398886The last two turns of the game could be described by the words "crisis management" and "oh god oh fuck Quorthon cast something please". Perhaps the little shit heard me, because he finally managed to cast Steed of Shadows after five turns of utter ineptitude, which allowed my chaos warriors to fly-march 24" away and attempt to secure their points value and potentially regroup for a daring charge if my opponent got cocky. Meanwhile, my daemon prince somehow managed to bungle 6 spells in a row thanks to the shugengan lord having a longer dispel range than normal wizards. Why, GW, why? Anyway, Dehumanizer's repeated failures would eventually result in him being charged by said shugengan lord, who used his magic blade to bypass my daemon prince's regeneration save and sent him screaming back to the realm of chaos in a single round of combat. Enraged by the death of his lord and master, Ormos screamed out a challenge when the arrogant Cathayan prince charged into what was left of my army. Perhaps as a sign that Ormos was worthy of leading the warband, the pathetic princeling on his prancing pony failed to inflict a single wound on the mighty champion of chaos and ran off to go cry into his dragon-mother's skirt! With my general slain and my only surviving unit being my regiment of chaos warriors, the battle came to an end. A resounding victory for Cathay and a terrible loss for Chaos!
I kinda wanna use tzzangor enlightned as chaos knights but I want to fill the empty space with some eldritch gubbins like hounds so it can have some kind of pandemonium vibe.
>>97399001What a game! My complaining may lead you to believe otherwise, but I had a really great time. I won't get in to all my mistakes and how I could have won if my daemon prince hadn't been utterly useless for the last three quarters of the battle, but I will say that Cathay seems like a really strong army. Not only do they just get extra special rules for no good reason, my opponent didn't even bring an optimized list and all his units were really powerful. It is obscene in the extreme how good shugengan lords are for their points cost and it's somehow inconceivably more extreme how terrible daemon princes are when you're not running the bog-standard, boilerplate, and boring ogre blade + meteoric iron + extra arm + mark of nurgle + lvl 1 wizard setup. Why do daemon princes only have four wounds? Why does their regen save turn off when they get hit by magical attacks? Anyway, besides my DP sucking and Quorthon continuing to fail me when I need him the most, I'd say I lost this game because I played poorly, which would be reassuring if my opponent hadn't purposefully brought a weak list. Final thoughts: The Cackling Blade is the coolest thing to come out of that new chaos arcane journal and it's not even a chaos item. Spells and attacks that negate armour and ward saves are extremely powerful. The marching column dogs thing seems like it's not as good as people say it is, but maybe I just did it wrong. Decoupling strength from AP was a mistake. Bring back power dice.

>>97393570Give me a day or so and I will see what I can do.
What do you guys think is the most horrific lore bit in Trench Crusade? Honestly, not in a dark way but in a really fucked up way. Skincrawl stuff.
>>97398056The vast majority of the Black Grail stuff but especially the diseased pigfucker, that one Church of Metamorphosis short story where a captured Faithful refuses to tell them of how their defenses work so they just decide to crack open his skull and read the information from the spasms of his dying brain, Sin-Eaters conceptually, etc. I think the more freaky or gross out shit hits harder for me than the more overtly dark stuff.
>>97398056That people are born into a world where a common fruit that people eat essentially melts them, where cannibalism is so commonplace these there are open air markets for it, and even worse things and they still choose to support that way of life. The total disregard of human life in the hell controlled lands is the most banally horrific aspect. I love it
>>97391717>greentextAmericans are really stupid when it comes to religion. As for your army, the problems really come to bear against particular armies and after a few battles in campaign. Lions are eh, but jannies remain solid throughout.Assassins really lose shine once your enemies start getting more numbers or better gear all around. Worse, they are vulnerable to shooting, and most armies can get good shooty down the line, and assassins are, at best, trading blows with other elite units. That said, what is your list?

Rule 1: In order to become canonical each post has to pick up something that has already been established by someone else and build on it. Only in this way can something new be added.Rule 2: Keep it within reason and don't break the immersion for everyone else. Rule 3: Have fun.Starting with a rough premise to set the tone:>Players are bug-headed-investigators collecting evidence of a vast, hidden control system that governs reality. >Detective work involves getting high on insecticide, cut-up-techniques and orgon accumulation. >The "Mugwumps," the "Reptiles," and the "Grey Officers" all represent control entities that feed on energy. >Don't trust 'em. >They are bureaucrats of a gnostic, alien order.>Be aware of the insect archons! >They are parasitic deities that can manifest as viruses (biological and linguistic), addictive substances or bureaucratic control. >Create a detective and expose the hidden patterns of the manipulators!
>>97398483>Game mechanics involve subliminally programming yourself so you can do manchurian candidate shit without breaking your own self-delusion.kino
>>97398483The player simultaneously tries to maintain the belief that he is human while attempting to decipher the dark workings of metaphysical manipulation. I like the Antagonism in that. I'd suggest the player needs to take antipsychotics at regular intervals, or even morphine in emergencies, to maintain this illusion. It gets harder the deeper you journey down the rabbit hole. This could be implemented with a value similar to the Mental Stability System in Call of Cthulhu.I think a secret conspiracy in which people are processed into food and sold in supermarkets Idea stolen from Onions Green would fit well into the dark schizo noir atmosphere.
>>97398859I think in order to make it work you need to have a certain degree of separation between the player and the character.Hell, maybe you have two character sheets: One for your bug person when he's lucid and one for when he's pretending. You have to do a balancing act of time between either persona, tactically code switch, shit like that.
>>97398921Sounds cool. Original idea. Quite promising Since drugs have been mentioned a few times maybe we could expand on that and make them a game mechanic. Stimulants:(eg Cocaine) increase concentration and performanceAntipsychotics and Opiates:Supresses symptoms and self-awareness but also blocks access to transdimensional information. Psychedelics and Insecticides:Give you Hallucinations, increase esoteric perception and allow contact with unknown entities. You'll see some things you won't like though.Obviously all substances come with their irl side effects.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I think it's important to clarify what players actually do in a session. I'd suggest that players start as "normal" detectives/investigators with more or less mundane cases which then become increasingly strange and surreal as the investigation progresses until the layers of reality literally start unfolding. Similar to Cthulhu, the players gradually become "mad," because of this with the difference that here they are actually experiencing a higher reality and achieving gnosis, which brings serious advantages but also disadvantages.
