Eh, I just had a bit of fun roasting spacefag. Personally, I don't get much out of his reviews, it's too much about how things feel and how immersive they are. Which is a legitimate approach, but not all games are designed theme first. I would argue that there are good games with little to no thematic coherence but there are little to no good games that care only about theme and immersion. Fags like spacebiff, susd and designers like wehrle beg to differ, and from their popularity it seems they might represent a bigger part of boardgames than I'd have guessed. For this audience space biff probably feels magical. They're all faggots of course, but that goes without saying. I do hate this design school of narrative first/the game is an experience and gameplay and balance are more sidenotes than primary design goals - I am in for the challenge, banter and exploring the system. I'm glad both sides exist, though. Just like space-faggot.

I replayed concordia on bga after selling it a few years ago and came to the same conclusion. I think it's a cool design and very much respect it but I'm not having much fun playing the game. Because it's largely deterministic after setup, I found that whoever throws in more energy usually wins. I don't mind playing the who thinks further ahead type of games, but since it's not confrontational there's not that much that changes my plans. Not that fun for me tbqh. Strangely enough, I didn't love it 10 years ago either.

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.
Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings?

My biggest complaint is that I think Utility Powers should have been separated into in combat ones like Shield, Tumble and the stances and out of combat ones like Crucial Advice, Instant Friends and Double Take and when you would get Utility Powers you get one of each. Or at least give everyone one class Utility Power and one Skill Power each time. Also throwing out the skill replacement Powers. Wizards if built somewhat intelligently can replace like 70% of the skill list with Arcana which they then can jack to the moon. I'd replace those with Powers that let you use Int/Cha instead of the usual modifier for one round per encounter. That way it's a lot less cheesey and makes Wizards and Warlocks a lot less "I just roll Arcana/Bluff every round of a Skill Challenge but call it 4 different skills".

It says "both" when summoning the monsters so both targets need to be in hand at resolution to work.

Any monster effect that happens when it leaves the field/is destroyed/whatever can activate in its new zone (except banished facedown/returned to deck) as well as reference the state it was in on the field (in the case of Mirrorjade: fusion summoned + under its owner's control + removed by opponent's card). A negated monster on the field is only negated in the GY on resolution if the effect itself activated on the field while the monster was negated and the negation didn't specify the monster must remain on the field to stay negated.

I like them. The rolls tend to be kinda swingy, but it's more of a beer&pretzels game, so it's not that big of an issue. The blood marker mechanic speeds things up and adds a neat tactical layer. Playing a campaign has been plenty of fun.
When it comes to things I dislike, armour (and by extension armour ignoring attacks) feels a bit too important at the moment and some units are blatantly over/underpowered

Mork Borg (as much as it gets memed on), Mythic Bastionland, Vaults of Vaarn, Black Sword Hack etc. are all games with a sound justification for existing, games that provide something unique of their own. You don't have to value them but the people who do have good reasons for it.

Cairn is like Knave: it's just a half-finished shitbox for people who can't tolerate B/X's roughly thirty pages of rules and that's brainless and contemptible. (And Cairn 2e is like Knave 2e is that it's still just as unfinished but tries to mask that with a profusion of trash tables)

you might want to check out Cartel (the pbta Narcos game) or the 100 Bullets comic for inspiration, it's like a modernized digestible take on the era without the kids on bikes trope.

Haven't used them much, they were a more frequent meme monster in the earl 2020s. They're sort of creepy looking if you've never been outside and don't have any specifically innate power or horror to them so there's not much to work with other than making them quiet weirdos.

One of our games has them as an antagonist of sorts.
Since the setting has fate spiders wielding threads of fate, there's an opposing (dragon)moth entities that eat the threads of fate. Very much a Creation vs Destruction theming.
Them being an enemy of creation hasn't stopped the party from managing to snag one as a companion, because of course (to the frustration of the fate spider character, but not their player).
Also easy enough to do a Law vs Chaos aspect, and have them represent breaking free from the shackles of fate, or a hero burning brightly before being consumed.
