Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97244003People other than Wizards can do poor game design. Knight is "what if fighter but worse in 9/10 situations" and is apparently a strict improvement on the Knight from the Gnomes Caracess Crawler.Enchanter could be fun around mid levels but the one player I've had that used it greatly disliked it. And he was my best player who made use of henchmen before any of the other newbies and was making liberal use of flaming oil every combat. Lost him from the campaign for a number of in and out of world factors of which a shitty class was one.
>>97243844>>97244233Yeah, Gavin is not good at class design. The Grimalkin's shapeshifting is also notably terrible; the flipping out invisible panic button form is strictly worse than almost any normal combatant, so the only benefit is you heal 2d6 (and then have to run away so you don't lose them again).
>>97206030I made a one-page "dungeon" for DCCIt's more of a side quest, but feel free to tell me what you think. It was originally written as a solo thief adventure, but it should work fine with 2 or 3 people as well.

What kind of fantasy monsters are you into? I like original abominations, standard humanoids/mythological creatures/giant animals are boring to me.
>>97234997
>>97228543Most fantasy monsters would be pets or in zoos. We’d fashion them into clothes and jewellery. Apostles are a different breed because they are humans and can blend (sorta, kinda).

>>97248016You can't really draw a hard line between traditional games and everything else, or really anything else, because the moment you even try I'll put it in my next game session. The guy spamming "traditional games?" even in threads as obviously related as a thread about monsters really needs to direct his energy towards something that isn't being a retarded board-killing pest, because that's no one's favorite monster, and one even I wouldn't include in a game, making him the least traditional games related thing in the universe.

Previously: https://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/96936967/When last we met, we made G.E.T.S. (Generally Entertaining Team-built System). Thus far, it seems to be a fairly minimalist system. Now, we shall make our first setting for this system. If your proposed idea gets doubles, it is canonized. Any canon characters, worldbuilding, themes, et cetera can be modified (but not outright contradicted or discarded) by triples, quadruples, et cetera.Let us continue.
The world is an endless hall of mirrors.
All player characters are also kemonomimi.
Fallen angels are angels who literally fell, so safety is taken very seriously in order to prevent greater evils.
An angel's lifespan is exactly 7 days.
Angels are levitating disembodied breasts.
Then an executive saw the K-pop movie Demon Hunters and decided it was a good idea to adapt it into Dungeons and Dragons.Opinions?

Can I get a lore drop on the chiss ascendancy? I don't know much about legends but I downloaded a mod for star sector that adds the empire, republic, cis, etc. and them to the game and the chiss are just glassing the fuck out of every planet of their enemies. Normally that's a bad idea because war crimes means everyone but your cloest allies, and their greatest enemies, immediately declare war on you, but they are just doing saturating bombardments on all their enemies consequences be fucking damned
>>97247115some sort of blue tribal (?) empire in the unknown regions

>>97247115The Chiss were an insular mini empire in the Unknown Regions known mostly for naval combat (Thrawn) and espionage (SWTOR era Chiss). They were primarily defensive fighters, and incredibly patient. If the Chiss in the mod are striking out and firebombing whole swathes of the map they're either not very lore friendly or something really pissed them off.

>>97247847>>97247850get bimbofied.Unlucky to say the least. A wand of Clear Mind would have been helpful, though practically speaking it would be unlikely to see coming unless you know your GM likes curses and traps.
>>97247906Well counteracting the stupefied condition would have have been unlikely to succeed anyway (needing a crit success which would be actually literally just a 20 on the dice if I understand counteract rules right). We are level 9 fighting a lvl 12 boss with a spell DC of 32. I had more chance to crit fail the save against the spell than I did succeeding it. If I had crit fail I might as well have just left the session early cause my dude would have been rendered a vegetable.
>>97247901I had a similar experience in a previous PF1 campaign except my character died. Turn 1 the GM has a bunch of wyverns aoe acid breath attack my cleric and he turns to goop before i even have a chance to act. That really sucked.
>>97247847It's hilarious how much worse Stupefied is for casters than Enfeebled/Clumsy are for martials. But yeah, shit like that is why I grab Break Curse as soon as I reasonably can.

>>97247132Congratulations on encouraging the shit-flinging and accelerating what you claimed to oppose.
I occasionally post about my games but it's not a massive play by play (which are hard to pull off without the art skill and good susinct style of Callidia anon) just short posts about anything interesting or amusing.I think there's a difference between hating IM/Wang and just not being interested due to FFG being more interesting. I think most anons excluding a few autistic posters are in the latter camp. I don't hate all new things despite having massive nostalgia for 3rd/4th edition 40k but I also can't force myself to like WANG.Frankly I think aside from the homebrewer the thread needs MORE stories and more DMs talking about their campaigns imo. You can't lead a horse to new rulebooks

>>97247975>rantI'm sorry I hurted your fee fees for saying RT sucks ass (true btw), but other than that admittedly harsh opinion nothing in my posts was hostile or angry enough to be considered a rant, I merely stated facts. to be fair, using Pathfinder/D&D for your improv storytelling sessions is kind of clever.
>>97153793you know whats insane? every other member of critical role has been getting massively overpaid for playing d&d for a living, for years. and they still need things explained to them like it is their very first session ever playing. it drives me insane and its why i can never watch them. they want to be drama kids so bad but even still, they have to bog down every single episode with rule explanations, for the most simple roleplaying system ever. THAT THEY GET PAID MILLIONS TO PLAY, FULL TIME, AS A JOB. how does it happen? how? i mean they must legitimately be sub 80 IQ.
