Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Yeah it snuck under the radar. Cool cover art, in any case.

I think Dragonslayer is really cool but, much with LL, I can't really think of a reason to buy it. My group plays AD&D and we're going to try Hyperborea for the next campaign. That's plenty of elfgame for me, and I still have my OD&D and Whitebox stuff if I want to mess around with something else. When we play other games, we play other genres. I have tons of other TSR stuff to bust out like Gamma World, Boot Hill, Top Secret etc. My dad (who is one of my players) wants to play some Star Frontiers in the future too as he had fun with it back in the day, so he's trying to hunt down a copy of that for us as well.
All this to say; I'm an AD&D guy (but other games are cool too)
>>
>>97290099
>Yeah it snuck under the radar. Cool cover art, in any case.
I took a quick look and it seems forgettable. I don't like the new race-classes and the rest is... just what we already have?

It's kinda weird and said: The original LL was great, and Mutant Future using the Mutants and Mazes variant is an absolute masterpiece, in my opinion.
>>
I would like a list of what OSRIC 3E changed from AD&D 1E.
I know there is one for OSRIC 1E but apparently there were things changed again in the latest edition depsite it being a "teaching edition".

Shit GM Thread, because while you players are awful, there are some really shit GMs out there too.
>GM advertises game as a destroyed world by demons and whatever and people trying to live through or retake the world
>sounds good, throw my application in and get in
>trying to make a character from a destroyed noble house destroyed from said demons
>no info or lore or anything so just make one background that can fit in
>ask GM if it's okay and if I can fill it in with finer details
>he just says nah you're good
>is there a map?
>he just gives me some random borders map that looks like it was generated from some website
>yeah choose a region where your noble house was from I'm still working on the details
>his username is some pretentious TheLoreMaster btw
>whatever as long as he can provide a good story as the game goes on

>me and other players make our characters
>he then tells us to create a shared backstory

To get out a negate ASAP, only works with certain hands (lo and barrier/saffira/guardian).
>normal lo, place blessings
>link her off for almiraj
>add lo back to hand with blessings
>add guardian with either saffira or barrier
>link almiraj into secure gardna
>blessings triggers, you ritual summon guardian using lo in hand
>CL1 add sauravis, CL2 special summon lo
Technically the deck doesn't actually need it since you never summon more than 3 times, but this line was pretty handy when i ran the ryzeal cards instead of diviner and the dogmatika engine.

Are you the one I told a couple of days ago to ask again?
Anyway, this is not a trove, but it's what I have and it's quite complete. Some files are duplicated (as they're low size, I didn't bother in checking if one of them was more recent update or both were the same).

>Which trove has 4AD stuff? Looking for a starter pack, want to give the game a try

I have uploaded to the gf above.

If you wanna start, the core expanded version is more than enough. You can start with a dungeon crawl, or in case you wanna start in a city, you could use Treacheries of the Troublesome Towns. There's a few scenarios for level 1 characters too.

Check the lists in case you wanna use some additional class (for example, you wanna add a druid, you need to go the Wayfarers and Adventurers pdf). Be aware that the content is distributed among the books, even the short novel includes some monsters and a new class.

…fuck. I was starting to type up a quick post of how to be subtle about it, how to bring it up primarily in scenes that are already slightly transgressive, to bandy it about in already-awkward situations so as to position it more as something awkward than as something to be sexualized, and to sometimes play it off as more of a joke than anything else…

…and then I realized that, based on what I was writing, I have reason to suspect that one of my players was magical realming the rest of the group with a piss kink in my last campaign. And, I mean, he DOES have a German girlfriend…

They still climb and jump like anyone else, and the only piece of artwork for them clearly show mf with a hip and it even split into 2 parts, like he actually just had legs. Maybe the tracked part that the description mentioned was the feet.

If you absolutely need the lower body to be tracked, you can use Rapier battery, Servohaulers terrain, the back of Goliath Mauler, Legion Imperialis super heavy tank (Fellblade, Baneblade, Storm Hammer), the 40k taurox. Hey you can even use the Legion imperialis rapier as roller skate shoe. Servitor (with 2 legs) is the cheapest, but for tracked Kataphron is probably the cheapest.

And when he looks like he's about to ask you what the fuck, override him and tell him it's just for fun anyway and he needs to stop being a negative nancy.

This will of course precipitate you being kicked from the table, but it's worth it to make your point because you were going to leave anyway. Right? You were going to leave that shitty table, anon, right?

>Necromunda is Mega City 1

I feel you could say that about hive cities generally. It was definitely an inspiration (along with a lot of other British 2000AD comics) on 40k including the density and inequality of hive cities.

Also during the apocalypse war arc that follows on after block mania, (after unleashing the block mania mind control agents the Sov Judges of commie East Meg One launch a massive nuclear sneak attack against the weakened Mega City 1). When Dredd as highest ranking judge still standing retaliates massively with Mega city's nuclear ramjet cruise missiles, the Soviet Judge Commissariat reveal a "warp forcefield" over East Meg 1 that teleports any projectiles into another dimension.

Only they don't go to the Empyrean but instead they get teleported to an alternative reality where humanity achieved world peace in the 20th century that then gets swacked by like 5000 different megaton yield MIRV warheads. That's about the only joke in the prog. usually judge Dredd is 2nd edition 40k tonally but suddenly it's Threads or By Dawns Early Light

I think the Drill-abbots of the Schola are recruited from all over, not just the Ministorum. Guard veterans in particular, which does imply that all the Adepta have a finger in the Schola pie. Also, even with all the infighting, openly contesting the Ecclesiarchy's moral authority just opens the can of worms of "who else then?"

They were made to do the former.

>It goes back to WoD. All the dumb bugaboos do.
The ancestry is traced back to "dominate doesn't work on people of higher generation than you".
>>
>>97290260
>They were made to do the former.
I do not accept this as a valid explanation when the Exalted are ALSO extremely good at doing things like bureaucracy and linguistics that nominally have nothing to do with slaying the makers of the world. This is a ridiculous premise that logically extended would make the Exalted no good at melee combat at all. The entire point is they can do the impossible, not that Godzilla can't be killed by an Exalt because he's too BIG and STRONK.
>>
>>97290277
An explanation is that immortality killers have different restrictions.
GET was developed to kill immaterial immortals, Lunar's was made to kill personal enemies (defining negative Intimacy), Abyssal's works on everything thing, etc...
>>
>>97289282
References to other games aren't really hangups, and they're not a bad thing as long as WoD logic doesn't dictate how things work in Exalted. Grand Maw as a Necromancy teacher, for instance, sounds like a pretty harmless reference to me.

>>97289362
I think Deathlord immortality is kind of unnecessary on all levels, because Deathlords are masterminds with a fuckload of schemes going on and a fuckload on servants executing those schemes. Like, when you go up against a Deathlord, it's not like you'll encounter the Deathlord themself first. You'll stumble in the middle of some nefarious plan you'll disrupt and work from there to unravel a greater plan, and you'll fight come face to face with the servants of the Deathlord before finding a way to force the monster itself to face you. Having a fair fight with a Deathlord is already the culmination of a storyline, and the result of a lot of effort and plenty of lesser challenges overcome. Narrratively and thematically letting the climax of a story be actually climactic and an actual end to that story - and maybe the start of a new one where the rest of the Deathlords turn their attention to this new threat that has already slain one of their own - would be fine.

>>97289642
Because those are opinions some people have and are allowed to have, because this is a board for discussing Exalted, and because discussions where you only deign to acknowledge people you fully agree with are pretty boring, I'd assume.

>>97289841
Deathlords being awful but sane enough to offer cool shit and other incentives to their most valuable tools would be enough for me. Fuck, let them be genuinely fond of their Abyssals, even, in their own minds benevolent mentor figures, while also being evil as fuck, and let Abyssals react how they will to these absolutely vile monsters showing them apparently genuine respect and affection accompanied by whole lot of gifts.

When Tattletale enters, name a nonland card. Each opponent reveals their hand and discards all cards with that name. For each card discarded this way, investigate.

Legends with names and titles only say the name in rules text.

my group doesn't melt down in these kind of situation, but I can still feel like some are annoyed or are like "guess we're dead" or "this is is unbalanced" when someone goes down, or if the fight ends up being difficult. Our gm has been raising the difficulty quite a lot since our last campaign and I find that to be really enjoyable; fight feels more important and with proper stakes now; some npcs died, two pcs died, I feel much more invested in the campaign now.
Some players are a bit too into their backstories and "solving their story arc imo", its nice to have some personal stakes as a characters but it shouldn't give plot armor until its resolved

Players have bluffed their way into a Duergar fortress-town in the Underdark with the goal to steal an artifact they need to help them kill an Adult Red Dragon after they save the city from a Hobgoblin siege. They don't have much time, because the more time they waste in the Underdark the more the Hobgoblin siege progresses. If they take too long, the Hobgoblins will have successfully annihilated the city and enslaved the inhabitants that they didn't outright kill. So, those pressures are going on.

The party met a Mind Flayer who disguised himself as an "Underdark Druid", surprisingly nobody questioned that or looked further. He guided them to the Duergar city (he wants the artifact for himself) and helped them find a back entrance.

With this scene set I am not really sure how to flesh out the Duergar city. Ultimately, they will spend a session there with the goal of stealing the artifact, potentially fighting the Duergar Lord and his companions in the process. Looking for some inspiration on encounters that aren't just straight up combat.

Did a one-shot a while back with some fellow players between normal campaign sessions.
The DM for the one shot informed us he would be adding our characters as important NPCs to the campaign he was writing. I of course made a serious character and worked with him to tie it to his world.
Our usual DM made a suicidal Centaur who hates being half horse, and our resident lolsorandum party-betrayer made a character using AI.
The DM accepted all these characters, to my surprise.

I’m currently running a spinoff/epilogue of the last campaign I ran, following two players’ side characters as they explore the foreign land that one of them originally hailed from. They’ve finally figured out that the troublesome events that have started to crop up in the region are related to a well-known white dragon that claims the frozen wastes as her territory. What they haven’t clocked is that the problems are ACTUALLY being caused by one of her offspring as a consequence of his schemes to supplant her. As part of doing so, he’s broke several of the centuries-old bargains and agreements that were supposed to bind her and her progeny. While nobody really likes having her out there, she’s at least been pretty good about honoring those, so he’s unlikely to be seen as a more attractive option.

Granted, given what they found out last session about the native PC’s past, I suspect they’re going to prioritize dealing with that before addressing the larger issues on the table.

Do you understand how Silvery Barbs works? Since a barbarian’s rage already grants advantage on the grapple check, the only way to benefit from Silvery Barbs in this context would be the forced reroll on the enemy’s check.

Giving a new meaning to "cell mate" its another obsessive thread of the Board Games General

What aspect of the hobby do you have an unhealthy compulsion over? Sleeving? Logging plays? Reviewing games? Monitoring reviewers ratings to shit on them with greater accuracy?
>>
Tq: researching the team behind a game to see how much experience or qualifications they have. I know it isn't as important as I make it, hence unhealthy. But Ive almost entirely stopped buying and find myself more drawn to making the sausage so I want to engage with quality not quantity

I used to have an unhealthy obsession with sleeving. I've managed to somehow basically kick the habit outside of specific games (Dominion). There's something to just letting a game naturally and light riffling bareback making sweet love to a deck
