On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.
>>97242473Think of it this way: if you need a GSB, almost surely you could justify it via genetic engeneering (even with advanced furfaggotry and such) plus ancient aliens doing their usual bullshit as needed. Maybe some wetware implants.I mean, it's cheap, but so are GSBs. If you want something more or less interesting, I suppose you could go full autistic and ask yourself why there is a whole ethnicity (if that's the right word) of humans with funny noses or whatever.
>>97241451Kinonid
>>97242244While true, they also do it because it's a cheap way of conveying an idea or a specific kind of character trait to communicate the idea of the story.Star Trek is specifically guilty of this although it can be said that at least the Ferengi got a massive glow up from being slinking monkey dudes with bulbous foreheads and dragon dildo laser whips to a respectable race who represent old world capitalism in a post scarcity "we don't use money" world.
>>97240164What are some good resources for creating alien species? Or sapient races in general?
>>97242465Sometimes things just aren't that complex. Especially when they have a big folder to dump in threads of their specific favorite alien design.

>>97242690The authors seem to recommend running factions kind of like their own NPCs, where the faction itself has its own stated goals, personality, and agency. Each of the individual members of the faction fall into line with those qualities (unless the story demands otherwise). They also mentioned that they cribbed the "clock" mechanic from Blades in the Dark and apply that to all their games now, where the faction's goals are visualized as a subdivided circle (4, 6, 8, etc. subdivisions based on difficulty of achieving the goal). The faction fills in or loses a filled in part of the circle based on actions the party takes, and a full circle means the faction achieves its goal. For example, a rebel group that is trying to prop up the true heir of the recently deceased local noble would get part of its circle filled in if the party displays evidence in the court that the usurper came to his position by illicit means, or if they go and kill the usurper, but they would lose part of their circle if the usurper sends the party to attack their base of operations or if the party skips town without challenging the status quo.>>97242738I'm a newbie DM putting together a run of Lost Mines for four (mostly) new players of varying levels of engagement. >>97238006Something like this?>Seventhfold SharpshooterSecretly note down an Enemy or Hostile model, a hex and publicly note an upcoming turn. If at any point in the noted turn the noted model enters the noted Hex, interrupt its activation, and the “Lemurian Sharpshooter” resolves as many ranged shots as it has available (if it has 4 shots, do 4 attacks; if it has 2 shots, do 2 attacks; if it has to reload, nothing happens). The “lemurian sharpshooter” still needs to be within its range to do so.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97237113>Anyone who leads a group with a building is unlikely to leave that post. So that rules out abbots, superiors, priests and bishops in most cases. The pope is literally a senior administrative position and mostly concerned with management and both internal and external politics. Same for the bishop. Priests are stuck to their congregation and specialize in preaching more than practice. Monks are stuck to their monastery and serve by living an ascetic life and nuns are women and thus lack agency.Depends on the noble rank of other members of the party. A Bishop wouldn't be that strange a holy man amongst a group (such as Charlemagne's Peers) supporting a King or Emperor. Abbots fit amongst upper nobility such as lesser Kings, Dukes, and Marquess. It would not be unexpected to have a Count or Baron receive council from the brother or sister superior from a convent or monastery in their lands. Knights would likely interact with the parish priesthood. Outside their monasteries frairs, monks and nuns would likely be the clergy interacting with the more common people.
>>97226577>A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
