Sure, though I think any depiction of them would be pretty inevitably unsatisfactory. I personally like to think of them as some kind of a competitive omnipotent creator simulator where players create a (not real) universe, with even the most fundamental laws of said universe being malleable, with each player trying to impose their own vision on that world and with who's on the lead being determined by who currently has the biggest impact on the simulated world.

Had a deep romance between the adept lead acolyte and a scum recruit he initially picked up on Iocanthos when we were running the starter adventure in the core rules. This is why I like that Dark Heresy Genesys homebrew myself. You don't have as much crunch, but there's still a fair bit of weight to things. Genesys encumbrance I always felt struck a good balance between "number crunch" and "narrative".

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.

1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).

2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session.

3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

I remember reading about officers complaining that kneeling men that went down to let the others behind them shoot sometimes weren't that eager to stand back up, which is interesting because is what is to be expected form basic human behaviour but also suggests that that was indeed the basic expectation.

Formations standing while shooting at each other were bound to happen more often than not anyway, low visibility and slow c&c meant that once you engaged an enemy formation you had to stay there until someone else around you could give you a cleaner picture of what was going on. It was also reported during the ACW (and I assume it was the same during the napolonic period) that formations were harder to move after engaging the enemy in a firefight because there developed a sense of committment. Think about the medieval warfare reports of formations fighting like men obsessed over an imaginary line until one side finally broke, but in slower, ranged fights.

ACW is a different kettle of fish. In Peninsular times, you'd advance into the literal fog of war. You wanted to be sure of the enemy's dispersement, and so if you were faced with a bank of riflesmoke (and occasional fire) it was safer to march in, break up stragglers and hold the ground than it was to sit still and lose men (not to mention becoming a target of cannon, counter charges by cavalry, etc.). This should not be assumed to cover siege/fortification fighting which was a different thing entirely. Plus skirmishers playing by different rules, as it were.
By the time of the ACW the infantry's rate of fire was such that only very close charges were advisable. If you marched a unit into a solid defence you lost that unit before they could arrive in close quarters. This is made more true as you move toward WW1 with the more widespread use of machinegun positions.

If I'm the DM of this game and I see a player clearly indicate he's moving to the far back in cover with a bow, the enemies just got surprised by a flashbang, and another player is stepping up to the front to challenge the enemy, I'm likely not going to be playing orcs as 140 IQ enemies who swiftly look at the cleric and determine that's the tank while looking at the rogue and going "Obviously we must target that one with the lower armor and can do sneak attack."

This Orc, who by OPs description was unaffected by the flashbang (unlike his buddies who DON'T attack OP) decided to use a ranged attack on the rogue that's sitting in the back who's squishier and more vulnerable. Which is quite reasonable.

That's OP's description. We don't know what this Orc actually was or how he might have actually been described.
Presumably this is an Orc with a level or several in Barbarian, and nothing about Barbarian Rage or anything related to it says you must act irrationally and foolishly or takes away tactical control from your character.

The rest of your post is just backseat DMing (And kind of retarded DMing at that. Even a dumb animal could tell the difference between a squishy target and a tough one) which I don't think is really worth addressing.

If the DM had all the Orcs present immediately focus down the Rogue like a telepathically coordinated squad of combat geniuses, I think he'd be fair to call bullshit. But he hit him with one (1) attack from an Orc that was unaffected by a flash bomb and clearly more experienced than the rest of the Orcs, and yet OP decided to bitch and moan even though this had zero real consequences. That makes OP a faggot, even if the rest of what his DM did was retarded.

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

Your "grappling build" may be the reason you wanna play it, but it's not interesting to anyone else.

Needs a goal for adventuring that isnt "i wanna level up" or "I wanna become more powerful". Adventuring into tombs and crypts and helping towns with threats is a job that is taken out of NECESSITY, not a casual occupation. Wanna be a powerful mage? study in the academy. Wanna be rich? Open a shop. The character needs to be moved by this other goal to adventure. "I wanna do this, therefore helping the town guard/slaying the monster for money/escorting the merchant/etc will get me closer to that goal". I fucking hate "for no reason at all I decided to walk into danger"

Anyone here done Imperium Maledictum solo? I did some wrath and glory, but I dislike the D6 dice system. I know about the Fantasy Flight RPG material, I own it all digitally, but that's a BIG investment of time and effort that seems at odds with some solo fun.
So, anyone here tried it? Experiences?

It turns oracle answers from a random draw into a resource you can manage. Positive and negative results get kept in balance, you just need to make a point not to cheese the questions you're asking.
That said, I would mostly use it for minor questions, then roll for major ones.
