These seem to be the most popular ways of doing armor in games. Which do you prefer and why? What are good alternatives you've seen?
>>96525394>being able to dodge sword swings is anime>evading an attack you can see coming is anime
>>96515791I tend to prefer damage reduction since making it a defense value ends up leaving no mechanical distinction between being a dodgy fuck or a tanky fuck, and if you're not even bothering with that distinction how am I supposed to expect any other distinctions?>>96527259shadowrun actually does do this, with the difficulty of actually landing the hit being its own dice roll, followed by evasion as an active defense that uses your combat pool, and then you roll for damage resistance vs. weapon strength minus your armor value.
>>96527879>They consist of leather backed with five non-adjacent steel strips each attached by a profusion of rivets.Except that's not what DnD's studded elather is. That stuff is just the leather and the rivets, no internal plates. So nope, no redemption for DnD there.>Depictions of studded armour with much larger diameter studs or discs, not always backed with metal strips, have been known about for a much longer time.Yeah, interpreting artistic shorthand as exact realism is where we got a lot of the 19th century armor nonsense from.>Studs or discs with gaps between them ...You're trying to make the case for studded leather when the Estonian find you mentioned is right there to show you the truth? (I guess you're too busy wanking off over your own magnificence.) It's the metal splints that are the star of the show, not the studs.>>96528663>I was mostly joking, I prefer maille when referring to "chainmail" and "mail" when referring to scale mail or other kinds of mail because autism.Dude, that's stuff nearly as bad as the studded leather. Mail is mail, that's it. There's no need for "chain-", since there's no other types to differentiate it from. Scale armour is not scale mail. Plate armour is not plate mail. All of that nonsense comes form the same latrine-adjacent well that Gygax got his studded leather and ring mail and banded mail and so on from.
>>96535563>Except that's not what DnD's studded elather is.
>>96534948They don't amount to the same thing. You don't even know what the rules are for each of those traits.

Ive made simplified version of my card template for printing and testing. Its shaping up into a playable state now. Im going to colour the headers in with pencil for now.Im chuffed to have it this far, its quite a complicated game but im hoping it resonates with people. It will need some little counters though so I need to make some
Why did they eve try this marketing gimmik? How could this ever work? Are there any good ones?Do you wish one in particular existed?
>>96534680it's really cheap as far as movie marketing goes and will probably get noticed in the nerd market segment. Quality doesn't really matter. Personally I'm mad the rebel moon RPG got canceled because the retarded company that was hired to make it broke the NDA right before the movie came out.>>96534846oh yeah this is fucking phoenix command isn't it?
>>96534680On the whole, license IP TTRPGs are garbage due to a number of issues. In many cases, a lot of it comes down to the fact that the IP owner often has too much input and control of the creation of the RPG.That said, there are a few standouts that did create a great game; WEG Star Wars, Serenity, and Dragon Age.
>>96535163>oh yeah this is fucking phoenix command isn't it?Yeah, they also had the rights for Lawnmower Man and made a game that was strangely close to the sequel in terms of setting and tone. I didn't bring up that one because they kinda made it work and there are like 3 Lawnmower Man videogames so the IP seemed tempting at the time. A wargame adaptation of the 90's Dracula movie on the other hand...
>>96534680How does it work? Does it use Tri-Stat, since it's by Guardians of Order? I guess technically they count for several BESM books with licensed settings.
>>96535396pretty muchthe big pitch is that it was made for a single player and GM, but I'm not entirely sure what it does to achieve that besides telling you to do that. I guess only stating the main character of the movie?
How do we stop it?

I have millions of ideas for roll tables, but I’m afraid of dice curves.

Power Attack was a huge part of what 3.5 made martials better than pathfinder martial
>>96535612The fact that they need power attack in the first place is what made them worse. In most systems you could just pump your strength, get a big weapon and that's enough to deal solid damage. In D&D you must have power attack and then preferably to also have ways of offsetting the attack penalty. Mind you PF isn't really better in that regard.

Outside of trapfinding I think fantasy games run better with participative skill encounters and implicit class skill lists. You can always counting on the 13th age fag to have the most dogshit opinion that would eclipse an OSR cultist
>>96534710those game mechanics predate 5e and my 6 month year old son will beat up your third grader with a gurisame . you cannot advance.
>>965349492e is good beacuse of the depth of the different settings it offered. I find the rules to be pretty mid, though the metagame was healthier than later editions and that is worth a great deal. >>96535007Skill list are retarded 90% of the time. 3/4/5e type games have one players Autosolve the encounter most of the time, or feel terrible when they roll a 3 and someone who just dipped the ability rolls a 20. Without pedantic skill lists you get far more players engaging with a social encounter or dungeon room and I get to reward and punish my players appropriately for nonlinear thinking or general idiocy . I often finding myself saying 'you need to pick a lock give me int or dex' instead of ' who has trapfinding?'
>>96534947It didn't say it was bad, I said it is one of the traits of 5E D&D that the FFXIV RPG kept as it evolved out of a 5E setting hack into something a little more of its own thing.>>96535090You're retarded.
Itt we help each other find a system that fits given setting.I'm looking for something fitting Blue Archive lore. >>96520987But anon, vampires are all about mundane characters thrown in with a disturbing sexual "stranger".This is way they are almost (AH!) dead to us now. We generally accept every kind of sexuality, or at least people that actually read books are.Let the Right One In is a good example, having to resort to irksome kiddy matters or even paedophilia, that are the big execptions. That being said I didn't read this one, so I can't make a comparision.

>>96533602Each chapter has a different art style depending on what the current version the sutra is being presented as. The first chapter is in the version of a direct translation of ancient japanese into modern day parlance, so it has the classical illustration Tale of Genji style. The second one is about a manga adaptation so it turns into that styleThe third ones a little weird, it sort of looks like Patrick Nagel? I guess that's because it's infiltrating the club and yakuza scene through extensive body tattoos. Either way it's not a terrible design decision, kind of fun.

Trench Crusade General - /trench/Weird love Edition >What is Trench Crusade? An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu. >What Trench Crusade is not TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic. >What's the QRD on the background? The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes. >How do I get started? All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. >>96535040Responding to myself because I don't think I was clear: the attack just has a -1 dice modifier because you are downed. E.g. if you attack with a downed model that has +2 dice in melee, it would fight at +1 dice while downed.
i have not interacted with anything trench crusade related since the beginning of the year, but i have have read that the IP and the new lore has been infested with insufferable lefties. This is the only place i can ask, how truth is that ?
>>96535213>muh leeeftiiists!>btw guys I dont really interact with the thing but muh leeeftiiists!Fuck off you goddamn culture war nigger. If you are only gonna interact with it because you felt some culture war calling you can turn around and go back to whatever shitpit of beelzebub you came from.
What is the point of the warwolf being artificial? The keywoard doesnt come with inherent benefits or drawbacks according to the keyword section. The witch, lions and bulls also have artificial in their abilities (artificial life/body) which causes different effect and the lion and bull arent even subject to the artificial keyword (which doesnt do anything anyway?). Seems like something that needs cleaning up.
>>96535608Tuomas can add things later that impacts Artificial creatures. Alternately you can come up with some stuff to make it into a real keyword for flavor. Maybe certain objectives that require not being artificial too capture etc.
These are the most hit or miss aspect of my games. How do you run them? How do you deal with misseable clues and dumb player derailments?
>>96525384GURPS really does work well as background material for other systems.
>>96512895>you aren't writing a novel>railroad a bad ending if players don't follow your plotSo which one it is?
>>96509801So far I know only three distinct models:1- BRP Call of Ctuhlhu: you roll to check if you find the clue; this is also the norm for most games out there2- InSpectres: Roll high enough and you get to narrate the clue finding3- Gumshoe: You automatically find the clueAre there any others, and how do they work? Also, feel free to expand on any of the above if you want to.I post this not only to see what other games there are, but also to try and find alternate solutions for the problem "if you fail to find the clue, the game dies".
>>96532766>3- Gumshoe: You automatically find the clueActually not. Core clues are what you find automatically*, but you do spend for, well, point-spend clues. For finer details and more clarity, basically.*=technically you don't spend for zero point clues, incospicious clues or simple searches as well.
The Aztec ACKs campaign report that was posted to /osrg/ is worth looking at. The structure of the campaign involves investigating different leads in order to track down the location of something.https://mega.nz/file/id51UZqa#9pZoBcVtOF3vssbZ4kON2WN9XAbGvSi-TStiB9nKTxY
The military should show up more often in cyberpunk settings/games. There's something really cool about corporation lackeys or street thugs getting BTFO by a whole other level of tech>but cyberpunk is about when the government is weakYeah but there's still going to be some kind of military and they ARE going to be way ahead 99% of corporations.
>>96535454Dodging the law doesn't mean the law doesn't exist. The legal ramifications of the gear they try to acquire for their jobs is very real and a constant source of potential trouble if they accidentally buy from undercover cops or a regular they buy from gets arrested and snitches on his customers to cover his own ass. Military-grade is still a meaningful distinction even in these cyberpunk settings for that reason, it means you're leaving the civilian market and either buying things that will get you thrown in buttfuck prison forever or you're shifting enough bills to buy whatever it is that it represents a massive investment for your team.
Problem is the usual corpos vs state idea is not really believable, so this kind of question is not even wrong.
>>96535493What I always find so difficult with suspending belief and immersion is the fact that they are still walking around everyday with these "military" grade upgrades.I suppose if it doesn't visibly turn you into something like Adam Smasher then going to get coffee from a cafe doesn't look as weird with your weaponized body unless it's all conveniently made so you still look like a person but built like a tank.
>>96535290when people say military grade they're usually implying its more durable, like cordura stuff
>>96533216>they ARE going to be way ahead 99% of corporations. Not really. The premise of Cyberpunk is that corpos have insane amounts of power. The megacorps are the ones researching all of that fancy tech that the government would be paying contracts for. And because the government is weaker, that means they don't have unlimited funds to buy the best bleeding-edge tech from every corp.If they did, then you wouldn't have a cyberpunk setting, because any megacorp that tries to go against the government wouldn't be able to stand up to a military cyborg raid. Which is precisely why the megacorps don't sell their best stuff to the military in cyberpunk, so that they can continue to do shit with impunity.
