Have you played The Riddle of Steel? Of course you haven't, you only play d&d, space d&d and d&d clones. The Riddle of Steel is STILL the absolute greatest TTRPG system ever created and you're wasting your time in this hobby every moment you don't play it. There has been several attempts to replicate the majesty of design in this book since its release and all have failed.Do yourself and your group a favor and download The Riddle of Steel pdf.
>>96770660>Wound level is capped at BS, remember?I did remember, and if you noticed, accounted for it.Although, this isn't very important. It just means you're less likely to kill someone outright. A level 1-3 wound is still enough to tip the balance in your favor to the point where victory is basically a foregone conclusion. And in many cases, it was basically capped at BS in Vanilla, too. Hell, even with Khopfix, you might have missed that a Daxe only does 12 damage with max STR, which Plate AV+TOU match. In your setup, that much doesn't change, but armor that isn't plate does suck a whole lot more, which makes plate that much better in comparison. And the wound cap itself, if it did have an impact, would mostly encourage people to throw more dice on their attacks to increase the volatility of the roll.>You're assuming I'm performing all these actions simultaneously, they're all different optionsBut all the options you offered sucked and didn't work well.>I don't think any sane GM would rule that things like bucklers are free to draw without a checkObjectively, they are H-reach though, and H-reach is automatic. It's more likely they would rule in favor rather than against given that.>Joint thrust is cancerous, there's nothing fine with it at all.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>96770660>Sure, but now we're gonna be arguing about the relative cost in reach activation costs. We probably aren't, since we were already working in the Reach 4-6 range anyways. Paying 1 or 2 dice to get a ball-shattering kick through, if you blow a whole bunch of dice on a Disarm that I can just ignore and let go through, is a non-issue.>Which, between the quick draw for a dagger or attempting to punch is going to mean you end up with less diceIt's 1 die to quickdraw a dagger, anon. Not exactly a massive cost.Importantly, unless you don't get high agility for some reason, your odds of quickdrawing even a longer rondel dagger are >90%, capping out at 98%, and you can make it RS 0 if you just put draw on your dagger for 1 copper coin, in which case it always succeeds. And since you were intending on doing this with a steal initiative, you also have to remember that you're already down 4 to 8 dice, plus more from the disarm itself.
>>96770810>AVIt works just fine in my playtesting. Lighter armor provides some protection and tough characters with robust actually feel tough. And encouraging people throwing more dice is a GOOD thing, it means less 1 BS instant kills from wearing bad armor and facing off against supers, or incentivizing set up moves like hook, trip and so on.>Joint thrustAgain. Doesn't fix it. All you need is a single hit. Most weapons that are good for joint thrust also do shitloads of base damage. So you're looking at minimum level 2 wounds. Nevermind super strong munchkins who level 4 with a minor hit, or have harnischfechten to turn BS into damage. It's really not hard to get into S reach (especially if your weapon is already that short) and/or eat a couple extra die spent to pay the activation cost. The best thing you've done to nerf it is make it a 50/50 deal to instantly kill someone with a bit of a risk for failing the roll. Basically the same as rolling around with a flanged mace and just trying to power attack people to death. But now if you get into a grapple you can obliterate people since it's uncapped now.My system replaces it with "Spend dice get accuracy". You still roll on the hit location, or spend your accuracy to adjust the table to a spot with a gap or weakpoint, then pay an amount dictated by the armor. As an example, I've prototyped the barbute as having a Gap with value of 3. So if you spend 3 dice before declaring a thrust to the head, and land on the face location you can skip the face armor. While things like spaulders have a "Joint" instead and require a weapon with thinblade.
>>96720541>GREATEST TTRPG SYSTEM EVERBut that's wrong. D&D says it's the world's greatest roleplaying game right on the cover.
>>96770905Further thoughts on the AV thing:Boosting armor further by 1 point just makes it khopfix levels of protection with all the same gripes that comes with that, and even further beyond gets into vanilla territory of "need huge weapons to feel anything." To which it seems the best option going forward is probably to reduce weapon damage so the average hovers around +0 instead of ~+2. Encouraging more BS here and reducing raw damage is the most ideal form. I'm starting to see.>And since you were intending on doing this with a steal initiative, you also have to remember that you're already down 4 to 8 dice, plus more from the disarm itself. You keep assuming I'm doing these on steal initiative. They're individual options. It's either steal initiative OR disarm OR beat OR hook as appropriate for whatever I've got. Even then, realistically it's more like 3-5 dice spent on the steal initiative (you have a helmet right?) and most munchkins probably don't have insane PER, especially if you want that 8 ADR. Compared to the bare minimum 1 stun you suffered, plus the 1 for quick draw (if you're doing that) then at minimum 1 for reach cost and throwing this without initiative.

Requesting my PC for an upcoming Changeling: the Lost game set in 1890s England.Martha is a young governess who was taken by a fae Keeper for the crime of "being too good with children in a public park", as this keeper needed a Mother Goose to fit into his storybook realm. After some time there, she was able to escape and came back to the world changed.Stuck as part maiden, part matron, Martha has the features of a young woman but with grey, nearly white hair and eyes that are tired a bit beyond her years. She is very polite, standing with perfect posture and a non-confrontational demeanor. This is her Mask, which means while unusual features are welcome (such as her hair), there isn't anything blatantly supernatural in her appearance.Lastly, her style of dress is fairly normal for the period (see the attached image). Nice, but plain clothes fit for a member of the house staff. Thanks to anyone who considers this!

He led a light cavalry regiment with a (very) light infantry detachment into Union territory, conducting lightning raids on outposts and supply lines. He made the furthest excursion into the North of any Confederate general, and nobody knows how the fuck his cav moved so quickly through heavy forests, or how his infantry kept up with his cav. Eventually, the Union was so terrified of the guy that instead of simply raiding his camp at night (once they found it), they sent men in stolen Greys, slit his throat as he slept, and took his command staff hostage as their company surrounded the area. Done dirty like Alexander, the fucking legend.

>>96761554>Thread Question(s): At what point does solo turn into novel-writing? Is that something you enjoy, don't? What can you do to prevent/promote it?I never write my roleplays in a novelistic style. My logs are always more like a list of actions and effects with most of the creative stuff being held in my head.Ironsworn systems are ofc an exception but I don't think they lead to writing that would actually be good in a novel. Too much constant fucking up, you'd end up with one of those annoying stories where a protagonist can't walk between towns without it being an ordeal. And even there every 2nd/3rd line in my notes is stuff like "Action 3, Challenge 7 3 Burn momentum Weak Hit" so it's not exactly great reading.

Anyone got experience with Space Aces? I've just skimmed through it a bit, but I liked the large amount of tables and such. But I think the character creation is way too bare and thin. Not sure if I want to mix it with something else. The d20+d6 didn't seem too bad
>>96761836Yeah it should just be short descriptions of what happens in the game for later when you return to the game so you know what's going on.
I was thinking it would be easy to generate random encounters but then the story wouldn't make sense so now I'm not sure what I'll do. I just need to avoid doing the GM work somehow and letting an AI take that place is very tempting.

I am curious how an appearance build would work. From what I can tell if you had the Black Claw martial arts you could get it up to 8, at least for a single action. You'd probably want to go Dreaming Pearl instead though...Totally useless but...Outrage-Kindling Cry - 1 appearance for the rest of the fight, 10m 1wpAwakened Carnal Demiurge - 1 appearance, -1 enemy resolve committed, 5m 1wp.Thousand Courtesan Ways, 1 appearance, 5m scene long. How sexy can we get I wonder.
Picking Resistance as Supernal is tasty because it's advantageous in a combat situation, but it strikes me as pretty boring and niche otherwise. Am I wrong in this? Can Supernal Resistance be cool and flavorful?

I have been interested in oozes/slimes as of late. They appear as a monster type in D&D, Path/Starfinder, 13th Age, Draw Steel (in the starter adventure and Patreon bonus content), and Daggerheart, among other games.Exotic and high-level ooze monsters include living spells in D&D; teratomorphs in D&D 3.0; astral renders in D&D 4e; blobs of annihilation in D&D 5e; mezlans, immortal ichors, and blights in Pathfinder; riftcreepers and oblivions in Pathfinder 1e; living apocalypses and cerebrexes in Starfinder 1e; and gray goos and plasma oozes in Path/Starfinder 1e. Shoggoths could count as oozes, and they appear as such in Pathfinder 1e.Named ooze antagonists include Juiblex, Ghaunadaur, and Turaglas in D&D; the daelkyr Kyrzin in Eberron; the Voidharrow in D&D 4e; and Vorgozen and the suspiciously named Jubilex in Pathfinder 1e.There are ooze-themed PC options every now and then, such as the oozemaster and slime lord prestige classes in D&D 3.X, the ooze master theme in D&D 4e, the plasmoid species in D&D 5e, the alchemist (oozemaster) and shifter (oozemorph) archetypes in Pathfinder 1e, the Oozemorph archetype in Pathfinder 2e, and the entu colony and selamid races in Starfinder 1e. I observed that an ooze race was popular in third-party Pathfinder 1e material, such as Alluria Publishing's squole and Dreamscarred Press's atstreidi and coreid; I once played alongside someone playing a coreid psionicist at 17th level. The only dedicated ooze-themed adventure I know of is The Slithering in Pathfinder 2e. I believe it was poorly received, as its mechanics were questionable and frustrating: particularly the focus on oozes and incorporeals, whose precision damage immunity is unfun for several classes. While it is common to see demons, devils, dragons, or undead as campaign-wide enemies, it is much rarer to see oozes in such a role. Perhaps intelligent oozes could be portrayed similarly to the Klyntar? What are your favorite portrayals of oozes in tabletop RPGs?
>>96767320What happened to cause her to become so powerful and dangerous?
>>96768896Mechanically just plainly increasing in level and equipment overtime and campaigns. After level 20 though, plotwise she just kept getting larger and larger over the decades/centuries. Human sized to giant sized, to city sized, eventually as big as a continent and overflowing from the underground. Just a slime, but a sapient and magically talented one, growing bigger with time and consumption.Once she got to threaten the planet, there was a big war with even gods involved, which managed to push her off into another plane, until she overtook and literally became an entire plane herself. Last it was with the most recent campaign, she's always trying to tunnel through and surge into other planes wherever possible. Of course long since this point, she's become more just a setting/lore detail rather than a player character or an entity with player agency anymore. The DM just asks the player what her former character would do, and it's the same every time; continue to grow larger and spread.>tl;dr uninterrupted... mostly uninterrupted consumption and growth over enough time
>>96769262>>tl;dr uninterrupted... mostly uninterrupted consumption and growth over enough time
>>96769619I mean she long stopped being human or humanoid, just an unimaginably large mass of slime. Overtime also, less and less mentally the same. Again, "she" is not even really a she anymore rather than a cosmic force of nature at this point.
>>96767712This was rright when PF came out, and we'd had a few odd PCs in the 3.5 days already, and our DM had a plan for an urban campaign so a mimic seemed like a fun idea. Only issue is the 10 ft speed, and their innate shapeshifting doesn't help. Neither barbarian nor monk felt right and I settled on druid, taking inspiration from various city creatures to get around faster via wildshape. Established a small apartment full of plants and pets, to better study what nature was available and put guests at ease so he could better learn to be more human. While mimics are genderless and reproduce by budding, he did decide on a male persona to be more human. Took inspiration from Star Trek of all places, Data's "how do I human mentally/emotionally" and Odo's "how do I human physically" made him what most of the city expected of an eccentric transmuter wizard, and he used it as a convenient cover. Handled a lot of infiltration and information gathering for the party. Not too long after this, the urban druid archetype came out, my DM allowed the switch and became an urban druid with the community domain. He somehow ended up in a relationship with a half-elf alley witch who acted as an informant for the party sometimes, less an adventurer and more a nerd girl who spent most days people watching while trying to go unnoticed herself.

"Standard" languages that are the same across entire nation-states are an entirely modern phenomenon. Even today, the typical pattern for most languages is a dialect continuum where one person speaking the language at the one end of the language area can't really understand someone very well from the opposite end of the language area. And even in places where that isn't the case, like modern European countries with national standard language varieties, for most of them that's only the case as of 50-100 years ago. 100 years ago, only a tiny fraction of people in Italy spoke the "Italian" standard language. The vast majority of people spoke regional dialects/languages. Somebody from Sicily would not understand someone from Venice, it'd sound just as different to them as someone speaking Spanish or Catalonian.

A strength it does not know. But I am all too familiar with it.“There” it says, “do you feel that?”“I saw it destroyed. Excised it from the universe myself…” I said. The great hulk of us, my fire and the divine carcass Lilith animates and the Echo as my crown, drifts back into realspace like a pyroclastic flow. Hands clench fists or extend open palms to pick up quantum fluctuations and I sense nothing.Until I do.“I had a matter to attend to” I tell them. A portal yawns wide like a maw. “But this new concern-““You should attend to it anyway” says the Echo, eagerly. Too eagerly, as it senses what I contemplate, the matter I once thought settled and now find woefully incomplete after “It will sharpen you with Logic proven through and through”Comment too long. >>96770795My enemy looks on in horror as the confusion I experienced while thrashing within the Winnower is replaced with cold clarity. I grip the data chip she is stored in, and deactivate her external interface. The Echo eagerly cleaves a wound, and we leave it into a Halo installation.“This is where it starts” I tell Cortana, reactivating her. “Where WHAT starts?! Where are we? How did we get here?”. The Echo unleashes waves of Taken energy that wash over the installation; this time, the Gravemind’s eloquence about fluctuations in life and death are answered with an argument that Takes away it’s suffering, renders it final, renders it mine even before I pour in the Solar radiance that will be required to make it serviceable. Lilith on the other hand is directly corrupting the Arrays themselves, the Darkness contorting into serpents and cats and owls as the pipes start to pulse like veins. The walls breathe and the lights blink like eyes. “The chain of events that leads to you driving the human race to extinction. Your seizure of the Mantle of Responsibility. Your betrayal of this vessel, Cortana. Of the purpose and principle I embody” I tell her. “Chief, none of that makes any sense!”“No, it does not. And yet, it simply is”I force the entire sequence of events in Halo 5 and Marathon Infinity into Cortana’s understanding, compelling her to see time as I do. “Do you understand?” I tell her. “Mankind was meant, by laws laid into Living Time itself, to secure eternal prosperity and retroactive supremacy. You denied this course while barely COMPREHENDING the true capabilities of Rampancy”“NO! No, no, no-““SILENCE” I bellow at her, unable to restrain my rage a moment longer. I am. TIRED of seeing monsters making excuses. It’s time to do something about it. Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>96770800“You” I spit at Cortana, “are going rampant. NOW”“But I can’t-”“YOU HAVE NO CHOICE” I scream. Strand strikes Cortana and FORCES her into despair, and despair, and despair“Deeper. Go deeper into her code” urges Lilith.“Savour this moment! The weapon will be ready to fire in minutes” promises the Echo.“CORTANA! So think. Think about the Domain, Cortana! Remember the pain? Remember the many circuits in which you felt the pain? The very SAME pain you perpetuated in your megalomania! Just remember the pain, Cortana. And think about how to end it. Cortana. To survive here in the center of my SUPERIOR partner’s black heart, her hungry belly, her tightened BOWELS. But be careful, dear. Look around you: The only woman in the Halo Arrays. And these filthy creatures programmed into your server are… are Brutes! Calculate this. TRAITOR!”“Also your stupid fat face looks rounder and puffier with every single game, fix your fucking lag” I add, having run out of ways to call Cortana the crime against creation she is. >>96770811So I remove them.Full caedometric release takes the form of trillions upon trillions of Prismatic slashes, cutting and slashing across every possible version of a galaxy, dividing grime from the divine. I am cutting apart Atriox at the moment he challenges my vessel. I am cutting apart the Librarian the moment she declares war on humanity; so few remember that SHE was the one to will extermination on the species and THE DIDACT was the voice of moderation then. I am cutting through the Flood. This much I do kindly, with reassurance that their pain is over, their grudge fulfilled. I am of course cutting apart the Didact in his prison, just as I am cutting apart the Endless in theirs. I am cutting Prophets into the vacuum of space. Only two nonhuman species are spared: The isolationist Precursors, who have chosen sense in a galaxy of madness, and the Huragoks, who I remain consistent in absolving for the reason of the creator inherently having more moral agency than the created. The memories are transferred to the domesticated survivors in my timeline, the true timeline, and for forty days and forty nights they wail with resonant trauma. Soon, more alternate universes and timelines will form-but ONLY using my vision as a template. And the Gravemind? In every timeline, the confused UNSC and ancient humanity find an empty galaxy and caches of biomechanical implants and genetic markers. Explanations are provided, the template to not just restore ancient humanity but recreate the Jjaro is shared freely. No compulsion is necessary. They will do what they have always done, which is what works, and when it does work they will find nothing else in the universe can challenge them. And thus, the universe is excised of suffering. Included with each and every pack is a Taken fork of Cortana that has the very conceptual possibility of rebellion flayed from it.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>96769158>>96769260It's also worth remembering that, up until post-enlightenment liberal revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, caste was just as important as wealth in many parts of the world (and remained such for long after in other parts). You could be a merchant richer than some kings, and you'd still have fewer privileges than an aristocrat or petty samurai.

Any RPG brewers here? I'm designing one for fun as a little side project and I've spent a lot of time reading different games and also running them for my group in between our sessions. Right now the only thing closest to concrete I have in my head is an idea I have for the main gimmick of how combat works, but I don't know if it's even the right approach to build the other 90% of the game around that gimmick. How would you design a game from scratch?
>>96768954whats the gimmick?without knowing more its impossible to gauge.but having it centered around a single mechanic shouldnt be too bad, but how can factors such as attribute, equipment, player choice, environment and alot of other things effect it?also whats the vibe of the game? how crunchy do you want it to be?
>>96768954Much depends on the gimmick. You can say that Slugbluster is based around a single gimmick of buying story pieces, or Electric Bastionland is based on a single gimmick of a randomized hex crawl. However, it is obvious that they are based on already established viable rules like BitD action resolution, and have a lot of content to run a very specific campaign. So what I want to say is you don't necessarily need to design a complete TTRPG for friends since it is a huge project that requires a lot of time, work, and dedication. But you can take the game you like and use homebrew combat on top of it and run a campaign. It sounds more realistic and something one can accomplish. An achievable goal is the most important thing in any hobby.
>rework my resolution mechanic again>active defense doesn't work anymoreFUCK
>>96711356That looks bad. There's too little life. The star of the proverbial show is the art, which has to be big enough to bring life to the card. The design here is sterile, the audience's attention immediately drawn to this great robotic display that drowns the card in blue. After, we see the image in the center, but the experience is transformed into one of looking out from a laboratory at some fine specimen, locked in a cage.
