A thread for everything Dragons.
What is the best kind of Dragons for a game. Just the standard, firebreathing scally Dragon? Or is it better for a game to give your players variety?

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

From a paleontological viewpoint, the "dinosaurs had feathers" line is overstated. The best evidence we have is that it was primarily or nearly exclusively theropods, and even then coelurosaurs, and even then not even all coelurosaurs

Likely to had/have feathers
>modern birds
>tyrannosaurs
>a lot of raptors
>ornithomimosaurs (ostrich like dinosaurs)
>compsognathids (no common name but I think the little chicken sized ones are in the Jurassic Park movies)

Not known to have feathers, or even strongly believed not to because because high quality skin prints have been found
>allosaurs
>spinosaurs
>some with raptor in their names
>ceratopsians

baccusmon is great for shogun gekkomon ( though going jp to greek is a bit odd ) but works best for Nanimon, being the original franchise villian and like Zeed being from another dimension even back in 1999. I have no clue what form to put between nanimon and baccusmon though.

digimon story has pretty shit taste in evolution lines sometimes. source of the impmon to wizardmon heresy. digivice guns are from the same timeline as zeed. The o12 have been around for a long time now i am suprised we did not get full evolution lines for more of them. I like snakes leading into merva/minerva, reminds me of eve in the garden.

nanimon >volcmon >shroudmon works too but i think baccus keeps his goofy spirit better.

Bit confused on how this line is meant to be used. clearly something it going to give them blocker and/or alliance but being titan trait makes them unusable with all the existing O12 that want to swarm with only Iliad

I really love hex tile games so I made one where cities are dice (to represent the size) and you draw tiles from a random bag like Carcassonne and place them according to rules (like you have to contribute to existing forests or mountain ranges on the edge until they're a certain size, before you can start a new one).

The game was very visually and tactilely satisfying to me, which is important since it's being played in the physical realm. But the girls, as you can see, are a bit small. So I bought new ones.

I haven't painted them yet but I am hoping to add some numbers to them, almost like Catan has.

So therein lies my question (and I know I'm leaving a lot of details out, this game is very different from Catan, but it's basically a 4x tabletop hex tile game). My question being:

Do people actually like rolling dice in Catan? I think in Catan it's a very elegant way of adding depth to the game.

Currently in my game, you roll 1d6 per population of a city, and for each 5 you roll you can get a resource of the tile your city's on, and for each 6 you can get that or an adjacent resource. But that leads to a lot of dice rolling. By the end game you might be rolling 10 pools of dice each with 6 dice, and making decisions along the way.

So obviously I want to simplify it.

But the question is, do people even like the dice rolling in Catan? Or would they rather the randomness be removed from it?

I ddint want to hit character limit 5 times over and honestly it's somewhat irrelevant to my actual question.
Which was, do you like the dice rolling mechanic for gathering resources in Catan?
Personally I think it's the best part of the game.
My biggest focus is for the game to be enjoyable to play and aesthetically pleasing.
I think Catan is that and that's why it's more memorable to me than other popular board games like Seven Wodners which are probably objectively better designed.

>>97825373
I will check out Cascadia hopefully while this thread is still alive.

I want something easier than Catan with the same meditative joy as Carcassonne, which I played with a girl at a board game bar. But it's a little too shallow to be a full board game. I want something that starts simple and expands. Setup time is a killer for games I think. This game has zero setup time because you build the board as you go, like Carcassonne, but play on it sort of like Catan. No roads though. Just an escalating cost to build cities further away (though you can't build cities right next to each other and wouldn't want to most times.

>Best hex tile game I've played in ages is called Cascadia, very clever, might not hurt to check it out.
Just took a look at it, trying to find a rulebook or something I can read through, but from pictures of the game it looks like a lot of tiles that are two different biomes. This could be good if I took the time to paint them like that, although I never was a huge fan of how "small" those biomes look, and how oddly shaped. Would allow you to "pick" what resource you get when the number on that tile comes up, assuming I go with that.

Any particular mechanics you really like?
>>
>>97826914
Basically there are 5 different biomes and 5 different animal types. You place tiles and animals.
Scoring is based on animal behavioural patterns, so salmon runs in waterways are worth more points the longer you can make the water way, etc.
Its quite simple but has a lot of clever placement. There's also points for the most linked same biome type, etc.
More advanced play has different behavioural patterns for variety. Its a really clever game that links placement and theme quite well.

Java's an older eurogame but also good. Its a 3d hex stacking game with area control and height, basically trying to throw the biggest and tallest party.
>>
>>97827206
That looks cool. Any mechanic highlights? I'm into games that don't involve dice, but I do also like that element of randomness to throw some chaos into the works. I think choice should go into resource collection, possibly with multiple resource types per hex, but not more than three.

>>97827197
I might have to see if my FLGS game library has it and take a look, they have a lot of free games people can just play, to encourage people to go there. I already play there and buy drinks / snacks so I wouldn't feel bad looking at their sample copy. Kind of sounds like Carcassone, but with more meeples.

>Nigger I am from melee
Not that anon but that is an unfortunate thing to admit to.
>>
>>97826827
I know how to counter every meta deck, you cuck their combo with a disrupt like a hand trap, cuck their GY with an early Macro Cosmos or Dimensional fissure, cuck their effects with Dark Ruler No More and/or Soul/Skill Drain, cuck their attacks with things like One Day of Peace or Aroma Jar, then mill them out with things like Present Card or Soul Levy or lock down their moves by using Summon Breaker to stop them from special summoning 10 monsters at once to get out their ace.

It's all about disruption with meta decks in Yugioh because of how the game is in the modern day. Most times, if you can just pop a disrupt at the perfect moment in a chain, the other guy will give up and rage quit. Metashitters are easy to buckbreak like that.

Any suggestions for systems built for urban fantasy settings? I know there's World of Darkness but I'm looking for something that is more combat focused and less story telling. Monster of the Week has been suggested to me but I'm just not a big fan of PBTA, the systems just don't feel like a game to me as bullshit as that sounds.

I know that it's all about using cool minis, Militia more so. I'm just curious about what they can do best above others.
I suppose they have presence? Lots of targets, though I'm not sure if they got the DPS to back that up. As in, cool artillery and numerous tanks, but they're no Solar Auxilia.

>Any good ways to explain the difference between a mortal and a monster in your fantasy setting?
I have three different types of soul, the aetheric soul of mortals, the elemental animus of elementals (elementals that have become self aware/distinct "races" essentially) and I forgot what I called the liminal/fae version. So "monsters" would be different from mortals on a fundamental level. Although mortals can become corrupted or otherwise changed into monstrous forms so I guess the distinction isn't so clear cut in all scenarios.

It'd be more basic, but you could try taking the existing Wizard kits and reworking those into specialist variants. Some of them already have barred schools, or otherwise lean towards a specialty. It might be relatively simple to line up the Witch kit with Conjuration specialization with both having Con requirements, where the Witch offers a free familiar starting at 3rd level, as an example.
