Without repeating my previous 'review' of it and the mechanics: Most of my whinge about WanG holds, but it's also managed to annihilate all the equipment variety in exchange for adding in keywords that you pay extra for, make even basic mooks feel like bullet sponges (I think a basic mook takes three lasgun shots to put down? Short version, they have listened to their farseers once: To abandon the empire before the fall. After that they decided that shit was for little girls and the word of a farseer has slightly less weight than redlining your jetbike - fucking awesome, but what if you can go faster instead? They spend their time getting their cocks out to wave at Ulthwe farseers, picking fights with Necrons who are bothering exodites (or bothering literally nobody because fuck the Necrons) and going F A S T. They're sort of like buddhist biker maniacs, actually. Ascendance through wisdom, speed and violence.

Also they seriously can't stop poking Necrons. It was a big thing in.. I'm pretty sure it was one of the ynnari books?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I hate Foundry because it's over-complicated, clunky, and because useless things like LOS and dynamic lighting are baked into the product. But, everyone seems to love it. What am I missing? Am I truly the only GM who despises line-of-sight and sound effects and all that video game shit? I don't want to carefully curate an experience, I want to run a game.

But way back before Comp/CON I ran the game live, using paper sheets, and it wasn't bad. Maybe you can insist on going analog again, if the screens are becoming a distraction.

Sometimes, it is because saying "this thing happens" will prompt an argument about "but I should be allowed to roll!" And the GM would rather not have that argument. Maybe this isn't even railroading! Maybe the players are just babies. But it is usually about railroading or protecting some pet NPC.
Sometimes, it is because the GM's best friend has been pouring his heart and soul into the session, but the dice keep kicking him in the nuts. The GM wants to give him a win when things are at their most dire. But it is vastly less memorable, less fun, if the GM just says "nah, you hit him because you're cool."
I have never done either of these. But I can understand the temptation.

The biggest character trait of the Emperor, which is old as fuck in the lore, is that he sees himself as literally the only possible way for humanity to go on and he is physically unable to accept that other ways might be viable. We literally have an example of Crusade era Imperium meeting a federation equivalent and it was straight up genocided. It doesn't matter if yes, the federation is actually reaching his stated end goal better that what he could ever do. If anything it would make him even less able to accept it as a viable alternative. Picturing him seeing the federation and go "I'm wrong actually" is character rape on the level of Palpatine deciding to retire as a farmer.

If there's a Techmarine or Magos around said vehicle then they will happily clear all the statuses up with very little effort. Supported vehicles need to actually be killed, or have their repairmen assassinated before you can status them down, so if you can just dump a bunch of hull points onto it it's a much more reliable way to go about things if they actually bring Battlesmith.

Has there ever been a transforming mace or flail or ball-and-chain type thing? I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'm envisioning some kind of big metal ball on a long chain, but the ball can unfold into a claw or something... Not sure exactly where I'm going with this idea yet.

But I propose the use of miniaturized portal technology to enhance the range of your mecha fisticuffs, instead of rockets. No longer will combat teleportation be used merely to flash-step behind your opponent or warp to safety after a humiliating defeat by the heroes. No. Now you can open mecha-fist-sized holes in the fabric of spacetime, and deliver a flurry of manly punches at range. Just like your genius scientist father would have wanted.

Also, if you pay attention to the "notes" column, you'll see a number of options for making your own. Aerial or drone photos of real-world locations, various mapmaking programs like Inkarnate, etc.
Also check out Spriter's Resource. You can often repurpose maps from some of the more recent Super Robot Wars or SD Gundam games. All the mecha GMs I've played with have all gotten good use from those maps.

There was *maybe* an argument for them 10+ years ago to fit the "cares just enough to not use actual bits of trash, but not enough to actually put in much effort" niche, but we live in a post-Ender 3 world now anon, for the price of any amount of cardstock or MDF terrain that would actually decently populate a table you can buy a pretty decent printer and then churn out a whole table's worth for 50 quid of filament. IIRC the original reason why the game got delayed was some issues with the original publisher. He then put the project on the back-burner and it languished for years without progress. It's not like he hasn't done anything in that time: he has an ongoing webcomic-thing and has published multiple books, so it seems he just lost interest on the project and stopped working on it until recently.

You mean did? They would have to follow a line of inquiry, and the assassin themselves had not made an appearance, while being unknown except to the highest authorities.
I had planned for the assassin to attack the party and be well armed for it, but instead prepared to gank the pc. When the party finally fought him, it was really one sided. The assassin straight up ran for it, and was fought again later when the party captured the head priest and took him to the duke.
Worked pretty well in the end; the party enjoyed having a real nemesis to focus on.

I basically ignored the rest of the thread so possibly the same idea has been given.

There are two major aspects of ttrpg. The RP and the G.

For the Game part, the goal is mostly to provide challenges that can be overcome by using the mechanics of the game intelligently and creatively. Designing an unwinnable encounter does very little, or possibly even negatively impacts, the quality of gameplay. Defining "win" is important here. Because most unwinnable encounters are actually impossible to lose (and therefore, not a challenge and not part of the game side of an RPG) since the DM will step in and roll the "cinematic" that explains why it's just a story piece.

The RP part of RPG is where I think this type of thing has value. It can be an introduction of a major NPC, it can be a motivating factor, it can help build atmosphere etc etc. But in these cases, plot armor is effectively essential. You as DM should basically make it so that player choice might affect *some* of the outcome, the outcome should always be mostly fixed and mostly aimed at continuity of a majority of the party and thus the story. "Scripted" deaths should probably even be agreed upon with the player before doing it.
I can see a very niche case wherein a TPK could be a fitting end to the campaign, but man... Probably work on some great epilogue and make sure the party knows it's fine when it happens by telegraphing something like "it's a suicide mission" etc.

Long story short. It has very little gameplay value to purposefully design curbstomps and trying to put them in front of your party. Talk to your players about lethality in the world before starting the campaign, and explain explicitly (as natives of the world would understand) what kind of stuff is going to get you killed with little hope of escape. Don't spring it on them or try to put it in front of them on purpose unless it serves an RP purpose.

I might be boring but I usually simply say something like "you realise that this enemy is beyond everything you have ever faced since now" and then make it clear that their objective is something else like surviving, escaping or stall the enemy enough.

If it's something that I have already decided the player won't have any agency in it I simply don't give them agency in it and just describe the events. My players generally trust me to only do that is there is a big narrative reason that is going to have a payoff later (the before mentioned example where they get taken a slaves to kick off an under dark campaign). And even in these situations if they get some good ideas about things to do that would alter the situation I don't dismiss them outright.

If the players take on more than they can chew, or something bigger and nastier takes interest in the party due to circumstances in the game, it is entirely valid.
I ran a Dark Heresy game where the acolytes purposefully started a feud with the biggest hive gang in the hive, hoping to draw them out as proof of their heresy.
What they got was about 500 guns pointed at them, and no respite since the gang had everyone in the area in their pocket. Even the local priest turned them away.
What happened was a running gun battle with the party desperately fleeing thru hab tunnels and sump pipes trying to get to the upper hive. 2 of the 5 made it.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

I tapped out the last couple years. Losing multiple pets, a very close relative, my house (briefly), and the sudden appearance of a toddler in my life has kinda put a damper on my santa activities. I'll be back in a few years.
