It's Da PDF Share Thread!

STEP 0:
<----- That image is not a PDF, it's an image, at least for now. Check the 4plebs link below to find the PDF.
PLEASE READ DA FAQ BEFORE REQUESTING OR SHARING.
It will answer 99% of your questions about this thread. If you haven't read it, we will know.

STEP 1:
Please exhibit good manners. Threads start sliding off the board after a certain number of posts. More posts wasted on being rude means fewer posts available for sharing.

STEP 2:
Request, share, stay awesome!

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Yes.
No silly. Its a reference book. The various sections are commentary, advice and utility tools for the variety of circumstances that come up playing the game or prepping. If you fell for the gospel meme that's on you being retarded.
What are you running?

It is full of useful advice for running games. Sit down and actually read it. Dont fall for the "its just a reference book" meme. Plus reading is good for your brain.

Tring to figure out a good requirement for a special ability for a squire/watchman kind of character. someone who is largely a supporting fighter for a more heavily armored guy who tips them off to danger and fights in the second row. Kind of rangery but sans magic.

The character can make a wisdom check against an opponent's charisma, and if successful, they can give a bonus to attack against that target to themselves, or to an alley in communication range.

It seems excessive for it to take up a full action (two attack attempts > 1 attempt POSIBLY at advantage and one check), but it also seems easy to exploit if it doesn't require an action. Thoughts?

Well not using the same names and giving a fresh coat of paint already prevents most trouble occurring from people recognizing what the source is. The next step is, don't have a single source, use more than one and combine them.
What helps you with that is being exposed to multiple sources of media. Books, movies, tv series, animation and pieces of art like paintings, or even music sometimes, depends on what makes your creative wheels spin.

What are you struggling with?
>>
>>97822521
>What are you struggling with?
I think it's mostly me wanting to improvise a lot of stuff since when I do prepare most of the stuff I write before hand ends up being really irrelevant.
>>
>>97822550
Ah, you're not alone in that, many people here and outside struggle with that. You may find good value in changing your approach to prep.
Like you said, if you try to zoom in and prepare something specific you risk not using it or having to quantum ogre it. YMMV as different groups deal with hooks and agency in different ways, of course.
What I find to be really effective in situations where you have to be ready to come up with stuff on the fly is having a more vague prep done, and work on the details when the time comes.
You want to have them explore an area, write down just the main players, their agenda and personality. Add creatures, split them into factions. Give a basic framework of how they interact with each other, and maybe a few notable happenings that can come up if someone asks or does something.
The PCs enter a valley, there's orcs there. You know that the orcs raid caravans, so that's a possible random encounter. The PCs want to look into it, you know that elves have been trying to trade, but their leader is ill tempered, so there's also a patrol of angry elves around, and maybe they blame the PCs if they loot the wrong thing or act in some aggressive way. Stuff like that.
You can come up with stuff because you know what the premise is and how the world would react, but you didn't write down anything specific.
>>
>>97822308
I usually just start with a single dumb idea and then expand on it. Like for my current game, I wanted to do a fairy tale storybook adventure. So right away, I decided all the sentient beings are talking cartoon animal people. Then I was like, what if all terrain, plants, and animals were made of candy / desserts? The rest of it pretty much wrote itself from there
>>
>>97822264
No time. Prep is noob trap.

No. It's a curse for a reason. No one says it is the Lord God pulling you into this life with his embrace. If those bronze age kindred existed in the way they speak of in the history books, they were no closer to living a good life then we are no matter what their generation was.

Truthfully our histories don't strike me as grander then humans, spite, greed, envy, It's the same nonsense. Just written by a slightly more powerful hand.

Julian's lift kits have arrived. One of our new neighbors has joined Julian's Drinking Post at our back fence. I'm fairly certain, and Julian agrees, that he's a hunter.

If it's a single Nosferatu and not a brood, perhaps it's an Autarkis loner that would shudder at the idea of being discovered and having any sort of social interaction, let alone being dragged into the local politics.
I once went into the sewer dressed as a Ventrue carrying a giant check for a donation to an orphanage, asked for the newcomer Rat's signature and if he'd like to be in the Primogen Council.
The poor Cainite fled the city faster than a wraith witnessing me hit another Dead with my purification rod (haraegushi, 祓串).
>>97820254
Back in the day living a normal life was not pleasant for me. Sure, it was far better than breaking your back in the fields as a peasant, but from pretending to be near-invisible around the house, to avidly reading Chinese literature while having to call it garbage in public, I had a Masquerade at home on top of all challenges women of all walks of life faced everywhere across time and space.
The archipelago I came from taught me there is no "back then" I could ever "return to", I have to continue to reinvent myself like the country itself does across the ages.

Huh. A hunter over there in Suburbia? Odd choice on the surface... But our experience there is relatively recent. All things considered Texas does have some similarities to Cali and Brazil, probably a decent hunting ground for independents. And others, judging by Chelys' recent predicaments.

Suggestion; low profile and stock large Colt.45s to loosen tongues.

Gearhead thread but for /tg/

Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.

I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.

I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.

I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.

Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?

I got myself a binding machine so that I could print out pdfs and have physical stuff at the table. It's a good way of saving money if you tend to hoard a lot of pdfs but don't want to constantly shell out for things you don't know if you can get to the table. Also very satisfying to use.

Nobody likes you, zoomoid. Attending a social event only to sit absorbed in your little pocket narcissism validator, dragging down everyone else's enjoyment and disrespecting their time is cunt behaviour that nobody else likes and, ultimately, destroys groups. That's why I host five game nights a month(4 wargaming nights, one RPG session) in my home game room and literally had to implement a waiting list because so many from the local club wanted to come, while the RPG groups that try to form *at* the club which has no rules prohibiting faggots from preening themselves endlessly collapse within five sessions.

I have never banned phones but i havent had this problem because the people are there to play the game and not sit on social media and doomscroll while we are playing, just like when we are watching movies or playing boardgames/cardgames.
I don't know what kind of brainlets do you associate with but phones are never a problem when you play with your nerd friends that actually wanna do the thing and not random normies

On top of what the other anons have mentioned, stars are spoiled, entitled, insufferable man- and womanchildren who cannot have a discreet lifestyle or to avoid doing stupid shit to save their miserable lives. These are people who are used to having everything they want a snap of the fingers away and get away with their retarded antics with one phonecall to a lawyer. Embracing someone like that is a recipe for disaster.

Still haven't settled on units of time and weight.
Probably will just keep most time units the same (seconds, minutes, hours).
Will intentionally keep vague about how long the day and nights are.

Months/years are totally different though.
Such time scale is based on the lunar cycle which takes around 400 days. So instead of months a cycle is broken up into the 8 phases of the moon.
The world doesn't have the same tilt or wobble of earth so the differences between seasons is very mild across the world, mostly taking the form of wet and dry seasons.
You generally will only see snow on mountain tops.
Debated with myself if I should make seasons a full lunar cycle long but decided against it and instead will just wing it for whatever best fits the mood I am going for at the time.

But yeah, really not sure on weight. Even if I transpose one from earth I am not really sure which one I should grab and if I should change the unit names or not.

Long in the future, some hyperadvanced civilization has constructed monstrously massive pylons. They’re hundreds of lightyears wide, billions of lightyears long, and they lattice across the universe like a gargantuan spiderweb. These pylons are full of entropy-defying engines, producing matter and energy in a universe where all the stars have long burned out and all the planets are cold wastelands. These pylons are home to septillions of people and… That’s where I get stuck because I have no idea what to do with this setting.

So, I wonder, how do you solve the problem of Mortals Ascending to Godhood?

In my setting, Aretta is the goddess of sorcerers. She was the last of the great Runemasters of the Argenthai, a dying race whose blood is the source of sorcerous power in the modern era. She was the last Runemaster whose ability to cast sorcery was not restricted by the bloodline failings which followed her, and her descendants are far weaker than she is. Aretta was worshipped as an ancestor after her passing, soon venerated as a household god. And as her descendants spread and rose to power, her worship was standardized and proselytized outside the family (though still only people who retain Argenthai blood are the only ones who see a need to worship her.)

How do you bridge the gap between Aretta's death and her ascension? Did her soul come back to become a god? Is it the same Aretta?

Pic unrelated.
>>
>>97823450
There’s two ways to have this go:

First, the god Aretta is a new god based on memories and tales of Aretta- The woman’s actual soul isn’t anywhere in the mix

Second, Aretta’s soul became a god while in the afterlife, griwing in power and importance until she popped out of the afterlife as a super-duper soul that qualifies as a god.

The real question is how the afterlife works in your setting.

I wonder how much the Kairotechia would be upset if they actually went back to Point 103 and found Yakub among the Vril-Ya chilling with the Elder Things.

I think the primary reason why is because IGOUGO is primarily part of GW's Warhammer's game's identity like how paint pots are part of Citadel paint's brand identity.

I don't believe alternate activation will magically fix the wargame, but it is a small improvement.

you don't need to mindfuck this, Epic figured all this shit out already
>has every imaginable army from 40k
>including activation skews
>and All X extreme lists
>it has alternating activations
>shit works great

like there's literally nothing to argue about. AA self-evidently can be done because it's been a thing for decades, and it handles 40k armies fun and fluffy enough that the same players have been playing it that long without getting bored. proof is in the pudding.
not every anon is gonna prefer it, but AA obviously *works*.

Archon Studio is actually pretty cool. Also Blizz is not licensing SC to Archon for money lol, it's a chump change for Blizz.
>>

Bruh Blizz of today is not the same Blizz. Microsoft's gaming division has been bleeding money for over a decade now, and Blizzard is no exception.

How many Chinese riots were put down by one man wing chun-ing his way through dozens of people? Chinese martial arts masters are almost always con-men who usually get their shit rocked in any kind of real fight and then go slink off in shame and pretend they didn't lose. the CCP loves holding up these guys and pretending like they're super legit because they play into China's fictional history of being a mystical, super advanced nation of highly disciplined warrior kings who lead armies of kung fu soldiers who can all kill a man with one touch.

The guys right, though. There are thousands of cops and soldiers that train other troops in hand to hand combat and riot tactics, but no one would consider them legendary masters. They're just dudes who can kinda fight better than the average dude.
It is stupid when MMA nutriders claim every trad martial artist was a fraud, but it is equally dumb that trad ma enthusiasts get outraged at any suggestion that their heroes were decent fighters, as opposed to unstoppable crawling machines.

TQ; A martial arts master would be a great pc in CoC.

Serious question: What value do slaves actually have to your average PC? Like, I've never seen any PC / group actively engage in slavery because there never seems to be any substantial reward worth the effort.
It's like crafting or running a business, there's just no *point* in engaging with the mechanics because the rewards are puny.
How could you make it actually appealing to players? It's not like they can load up a ship and sail off to the ivory coast.

>Sure, each human is individually weaker than the giant they serve, but that's always been the case for slavery, a Spartan hoplite was stronger than his helot slaves but he wasn't going to till the fields.
It was roughly the same amount of work for either. Farming was an actually meaningful amount of labor for a Spartan that he didn't want to do. For a giant, the labor the slaves can spare them is utterly negligible. Digging a pit or filling buckets of water should take minutes. It's like getting slaves to tie your shoes. Ridiculous and stupid.

Most TTRPGs are focused on combat and adventuring. Slavery generally only has utility in getting menial tasks done (or, in some cases, like Roman slavery, niche skilled labor as well). The only point of slavery in most TTRPGs would be having extra bodies to throw at the enemy, but you'd have to somehow justify why those slaves don't rebel, run away, etc.

The most practical "slaves" in your traditional TTRPG would be magical creatures that are forced by their nature or some even greater threat to be loyal to you, like a genie or some NPC whose choices are "be a loyal slave to these adventuring autists or get smited by an angry god" or something similar.

My PC has a psuedoslave in one of my games. They're a techie who helps fix up gear my lowborn ganger wouldn't have access to and in return they live a life that's nominally more free than if they were to get captured by the authorities and returned to formal slavery.

If you guys are playing relatively RAW, it is pointless. The transitions in the succession campaign are very poorly balanced (what a shock!) and moving from Cinderak to Temenos you guys should all just reset gangs, or at the very least do something like rehiring gang members ar 1250+400c. Despite your outlier scenario Cinderak isn't deadly enough to warrant the 2000c starting lists, and any new gangs joining in Temenos start with 1000+400. The gang rating and even crew differences will be in the 1000s for just standard gangs, not even considering new joinees or your situation, or the characters randomly joining up. The move from Temenos to Jardlan is much smoother as those are both 1000+400, but even then if you play RAW any continuing gang will just be radically higher rating compared to a starting gang.
Why a continuing gang also gets 250c on top of everything else when joining into the next campaign is beyond comprehension.

It looks familiar. As if they took an Oberon Battleship and mixed it up with a normal cruiser.

Classic colors are Green body with gold and white prow. Or white body with red prow.
