I just read Little Horus. That was a gripping psychological thriller and the bolter porn was sick. One of the best short stories for the Heresy I've read yet
I see a lot of critique for Abnett does his writing get worse later or something?

>Not that he was afraid of change. Change was, he always insisted, part of his ruling character. ‘The melancholic humour is protean,’ he said. ‘It possesses the quality of autumn. It is transformative. It makes me the accelerator of death, the enabler of ends and beginnings. I was made to clear away this world ready for renewal. To change the order of things. To cast out the false and enthrone the true. This is my purpose. I am not afraid.’

Would allowing the players to have a paper and pencil to do calculations or take notes reduce the amount of time that players take on thinking? Would it increase the level of play? Would it lead to more draws?
>>
>>97831258
I would lose time writing things properly.

Impossible at this level, they maxed out already.
>>
>>97832596
My thought is that it would probably reduce thinking time. My IQ is 80, so it might just be me, but I think Hikaru would have done a bit better if he just wrote down all the possible moves and the different branches that could arise from them. Just to organize his thoughts, you know? It could have reduced his thinking time.

Yeah any basic healing would probably make a huge difference to this society. Well if hes past it hes past it. Or would necromancy be a temptation? It doesn't have to be full on turning someone into a vampire thing. It could just be like trying to commune with the dead for answers or resolution. Which considering how the magic police don't want people learning old things I'm sure its a massive taboo and they might be very serious about clearing out old battlefields and graveyards...I suppose dead at the bottom of a lake might be harder to find. Maybe a Ghengis Khan situation where they bury a warlord under a river to hide his grave.

I'm glad theres good chemistry. It was pretty damn funny to hear shenanigans of Arrianne's party tho.

I wonder if it will really be a straight up negotiation and hunt to talk with other nobles. Or if it immediately goes to shit with some noble attempting to murder another in the hunt.

Reminds of me lotr tax posting which I love. Idk how seriously I could be before I have to make one lol.

I think I already know the answer to this question, but I just want to verify:

In a hypothetical scenario where, say, a chromatic dragon were to have an item in their hoard that they, genuinely, had no idea what it was or what it did; this would not matter in the slightest. As far as that dragon is concerned, that thing is it’s… whatever it is… and it will fight tooth and nail to keep it.

Sound about right?
>>
>>97832934
Depends on the Dragon. A red dragon might fight you simply because it belongs to him and you dared to take it. A green would probe the party to find out who it belongs to and why they want it so badly, if it didn’t already know from its animal spies, negotiations have begun. A white dragon might try to lure the party over to the item and to eat one of them. A blue could try to recruit the party in exchange for the item, considering daring adventurers a greater treasure. A black dragon would probably pretend to be sympathetic to the party and then destroy the item to see them suffer.
>>
>>97832934
Probably. Some of them like Green or Blue dragons might hypothetically be open to a trade, but they're also probably going to assume that if there are people seeking it out specifically enough to request it, then it must be more valuable than any of their other treasure, and so they'll likely charge accordingly.

Even then you need to be dangerous enough that the dragon doesn't just decide it'd be easier to kill you and keep both the item and whatever you brought as a bribe.
>>
>>97832934
depends what the dm decides the personality of the dragon should be
>>
>>97831797

Nah, I want 2e back in /osrg/ because the arguments against its inclusion have never really been convincing to me, but I'll lean towards using to a broader definition in case of this sort of thing anyway.

Down to post in here in the meantime though, and I agree this guy who keeps flipping the fuck out in every thread is retarded.

>>97827071
Yeah, just pairing existing kits with each of the specialists would be my ideal, but I've had some serious trouble finding good pairings for most. Best one I can find is Undead Master from CBoN, which makes Necromancers what I always thought they should be anyway. Haven't figured out matching kits for the rest yet.
>>
>>97833124
>I found them interesting read though
That is most of the nu-sr games. Kind of a fun thought exercise wrapped in a premise. They're not unplayable but they have the stamina of a boardgame.
I'm of the opinion that people should play lots of different kinds of games. Once you have a good base you can look at something and know whether or not it's worth your time.
I like a game with a strong spine.

I always hear about the stir this caused, and recently about how bad or redeemable it is. I'm not certain about it myself because I dabbled with 3e and then got into 5e, never paid much attention to the scene during that entire era. What does /tg/ think of the system?

>3E came out after TSR went under and there had been no new official D&D for years.

In 1995 through 1999 TSR released 27 box sets, 8 hard covers, 84 adventure modules and 121 accessories for D&D. That's an average of 48 new items every calendar year for 5 years. That's not bad for a company that didn't make any new D&D for years before 3e came out in 2000.

The last big revision to the rules was years before 3e, in the form of Player's Options in 1995 and 1996 which was very much new D&D, and there was a whole new campaign setting in 1999. 1995 to 2000 without a new edition would be years but there being no new edition can't be what you mean because that's a hollow statement that has been true for most editions of D&D, starting with 2e's release about 5 years after BECMI. The only time it really wasn't true was the first few years from OD&D to BECMI which included AD&D and B/X and Holmes.

TSR didn't go under in 1997. It was in severe debt with no means of servicing that debt but it was acquired by WOTC and its debts assumed and settled by WOTC before TSR went under.

I agreee it was rather disappointing, but it's better than splendor for sure

That said, I'd still play splendor over it just for how quick it is set up and played. Not that roll requires all that much, but it sure is fiddlier. I've also learned through Roll that rolling small dice is somehow nowhere near as statisfying as rolling standard ones. I wonder where in the dice size chart the curve goes down again

Already grabbed myself a copy. I'm a sucker for theme and cyberpunk/cyberpunk-adjacent material.
The syndicates as suits that alter the behavior of the shared pool also seemed really neat to me.
Also off topic but relevant, I've been disappointedly watching Marathon's questionable launch success. Its got a similar-ish aesthetic, and a habit of mine is to try and capture more transient experiences in amber. Boardgames strike me as great medium for that given I can still be playing them in a decade or two if I look after them.
At least I get a dose of cyberpunkish material to keep in amber I guess, to compensate for Marathon's likely transience.

Roll for the Galaxy is the one game in our collection that grew on us the most over the years. Two players only. Takes us less than twenty minutes to play without expansions. Takes longer to put it back in the box than it does to setup. The cups suck but yeah if you're rolling those tiny bugger dice by hand they're a bit small but then again some turns you're rolling like twelve or more dice. It depends on your engine. I wouldn't honestly recommend the game to anybody these days but it will never leave our table rotation. I can't think of any game that gives that us that many decisions to make in such a short session.
>>
>>97833140
>Takes us less than twenty minutes to play without expansions.

it's not in games that already give you a lot of cards.
the "default" is magic and other draw 1 per turn games. they give you way fewer cards than you can use, so draw is very valuable. If a game lets you draw 2 per turn then draw is only half as good.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online:

They used to be split between the website and the discord, but no more. For posterity's sake, the old mega will still be kept active even if it's unlikely to need updating: https://mega.nz/folder/70QH0BBa#Eg-blxYQKkY_C02wErnFTQ

OK, ignoring the legitimate love I have for my family you still lose. Meaning raising an infant/toddler/kid/teen is admittedly tough, but much more enjoyable than it is tough. That's why you exist retard-kun
In 50 years my kid(s?) will have kids of his/(her maybe) own and maybe even grandkids that I'll teach and nurture in this hobby. In 50 years you'll be dead or dying and your posts in a Tibetan knitting forum archive will be all you can contribute to the hobby.
Ever heard the phrase 'the winners write history'? Damn it.
I'm this anon, and that was way more aggressive that I want to be. I know how the chans work, I've been here for longer than you'd think. I just woke up one day and realized being happy meant more than 'winning' threads to me. So I pushed myself and lost a couple times til I won. To the poster thinking all women are trash, they really aren't. The single ones are in a mindset surprisingly similar to you, wanting to win an argument (thread) more than they want longterm happiness. Both of you are wrong, but if I can't persuade (you) of that I'll just slip into the background of tcg.
It sucks half the posts here seem to hate the game or are trying to slide it, I just thought Franchina art was sick long before the game came around and wanted to support a game based on it. Wish we had IP counters back, that would fix so much
If you like the game and want to reply to me, try and post cool iron sultanate art or a model that could be made out of with ork bits, I still want to build at least 1 cool custom model

Anon, there's no reason to justify yourself for family.
Anyone who doesn't believe in having a family is someone who's been mindraped.
also this isn't a place to blog oldman.

Alright, home.
Pendragon is an RPG that's been around since the 80s. It was made by Greg Stafford and built on a similar system as Call of Cthulhu (they aren't the same same system, just super similar and homebrewing between the two isn't impossible, just kinda quirky to try and do).
The game is built from the ground up to emulate the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Each game session is meant to emulate one year of a knight's life, with feats, adventuring, tournaments, wars, things like that. Since the game internally can run for decades, it also is built on generational play, so you will play one knight, they will have children, one of those children becomes a knight, and when your knight retires or dies, depending on how old the child is they become your new character (typically they need to be 21, but some knights can be knighted as young as 16 in super rare instances, talk with your GM about that).
The game has a number of characteristics that define your character physically (strength, size, etc), and those characteristics adjust many of your skills (not all of them though, just most) but only your skills as they are at 14, after that you need to dole out skill points that represent your training as a squire up until you turn 21 and are knighted. Skills cover all knightly deeds, from sword skill and riding horses all the way to recognizing heraldry/individuals and more.
The game also has Passions and Traits. Passions are things like one's loyalty to their liege lord, love of their family, and any hatreds they have towards various individuals/families/tribes/nations/etc. Traits are built around one's faith and are always paired as a virtue/sin sort of combo (Chaste/Lustful, Generous/Greedy, etc). The total for each of ones paired traits is 20 (so 15 Valorous/5 Cowardly).

All Skills, Passions, and Traits have a soft cap of 20 and increasing them above that expands the crit chance.
Now, this is a roll-under system, so you want to roll below your score but you also want to roll as close to your score as possible (especially in opposed tests such as jousting or combat in general as the one closest to their score "wins") and rolling your score exactly is a crit. So if you have a score of, say, 24 then you crit on all 20s as well as all 19s, 18s, 17s, and 16s.
In order to increase one's passions, traits or skills, you have to use them generally (there is a chance to increase them through training and the end-of-year winter phase as well). If they are used, you checkmark them and at the end of session you roll and if you roll higher (or roll a 20 if it's already capped) it increases by 1.
Lastly, the game is best known perhaps for the Great Pendragon Campaign, a campaign encompassing like 80 or so years of play from 485 to 566, meaning you'll go through a good few knights in the meantime. King Arthur, by the way, becomes known in 510 I think? It might be 515 or any point between those two, I don't have the book right in front of me atm. But yeah, the game is expansive.
Magic is also rare and more of a mystical sort, not "magic missile" and "fireball" but shit like "WE CALL ON THE SAINTS TO HEAL THIS KNIGHT" or "the druid calls down a fog to hide your knights from the giants sights."

Sorry, had to step away for a moment.
Alright, last thing to comment on - "Your Pendragon Will Vary" is a mantra that's been around since I think all the way back in 1st edition in the 80s. Basically Stafford knew players would end up veering stories off in 30 different directions all the time and what style game players would want from the game would vary from group to group. One group might want knights in shining armor on heavy chargers fulfilling quests from faerie kings and queens, another group would want mudcore "chainmail is the only proper armor and kite shields the only proper shield, and no magic or actual miracles" realism. So while the game is, canonically, more in line with, say, the movie Excalibur or even Disney's "The Sword in the Stone" movie (based on a book if I remember rightly), it does give guidelines on how to adapt the game to fit whatever the group overall wants from it.
A famous story that was confirmed by Stafford was a female friend of his being asked to play the game with him back in the 90s and she wasn't super interested in it, preferring to play other systems at the time, but finally told him "if I can play a jewish lesbian knight then I'll play" thinking he would scoff and stop asking but he instead said he would have everything ready for her on game day on how to incorporate that sort of knight into the game. Why? Because the Arthurian Legend is one that constantly changes and adapts to fit the times people live in and the stories they want to tell. Hell, the idea of a female knight in an Arthurian-style setting even predated that 90s conversation by centuries, going all the way back to the 1200s with "Le Roman de Silence" about a girl raised as boy who even gets to be a knight and who has to struggle with her identity and the various social norms of her day, settling on using a masculine name, clothing, and presentation through like 98% of the story.

MTG is unironically an IQ test. If you're bad, you're low IQ. If you're good, you're high IQ. This even applies to arena which had training wheels for triggers etc.
