I've got a hankering to play a shaman-like character in 5.5e. More or less I'd draw upon nature spirits to do magic for me. It sounds like I'd be rolling a Warlock, but would I be better off dipping into Druid, taking the Guide background, or working with my DM to homebrew something, whether it be an entire class or subclass of Warlock?
>>
What are some item ideas or mechanic changes or anything to give players something to do while unconscious but stable?
>magic sword that fights after death
>playing pets or summons
>choice to keep rolling d20s to get 1 hp on 20 but risk haunt to start making death saves if 1
>becoming stable just heals to 1 hp
>>
>>97834991
There is the Vestige Warlock from Unearthed Arcana, which does explicitly summon a spirit. It also gets access to a Cleric domain as extra spells, and while it does just list the 2024 domains, it wouldn't be a huge stretch to use the Nature or Tempest spell list from 2014.

The damage types are a little off, being Fire, Necrotic, and Radiant. But you could likely swap that to Fire, Poison, and Thunder and end up with a similar overall effectiveness. And likewise the final feature is to upcast a Summon spell, but again swapping it for Summon Beast/Elemental also would probably be fine.

Add on the Guide background for a bit more Druid magic and take Pact of the Chain so you can have another 'nature spirit' of some variety and it's shaping up pretty well with minimal tweaks.

And also does anyone use different death rules for 5e like neg hp or exhaustion each time they go unconscious? Even my normie players have started to understand the stupidity and abuse of 0hp healing

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

one pet peeve about country roads with grass in the middle. This is entirely anachronistic and a product of modernity. The center of the road was always the most well tread part of the road both by beasts of burden, horses pulling carriages and by people walking there.
The nature would always encroach on the world from the sides and slowly diminish it if it was under less use than what it was originally constructed for.
If you have ever walked a mountain path you will know what i am talking about.

Would hunting outpace agriculture for the source of calory intake if large prey like the American bison were more endemic, and most of the continent not easily colonized by human settlers?

I'm working on making a setting where the reason everyone, even women, knows how to use weapons in combat is because their land is geographically just supernaturally* good for grazing, which led to ginormous animals proliferating there.

Dunno if it counts as "lesser known" if only because I'm working with it and am generally a basic bitch. Also the fact that it's basically most of the best-known pantheons (Groman, Norse, Hindu) reduced to primordial soup.

This guy's PIE-coded "Concavia" stuff is pretty neat btw. I particularly like how dark spirits are modelled after funky-headed cave paintings.

For instance I accidentally stumbled into the Striker and Many-Headed Serpent's rivalry with some of the usual roles reversed: A key aspect of the world is that it's a tautological time loop. One of the titans-aspirant will eventually consume their peers and then the whole world retroactively becoming the Ymir / Pangu primordial being who dies and decomposes into creation (which just so happens to contain the hungry hungry humans who will / already have eaten their way to retroactive godhood).

The Serpent is less a manifestation of Chaos than alternate Order based on such alien principles as to be incomprehensible to us. What if something other than humanity dominates all and so cemented itself as the foundation of all? The Serpent is both "scaly-nasty-water-thing" of visceral revulsion and the interlinking chains of impartial cause and effect which drag our worldview away from naïve anthropocentrism and into a nihilistic wasteland where people are nothing special (or worse yet throughput for whatever else IS).

The Striker on the other hand is "fertile" disorder. Their tool-weapon is both the Ur-flint, an aching wisdom tooth knocked loose by stone (as well as that percussive surgical instrument) and an idea itself extracted from the skull in pursuit of peace and quiet. Peals of thunder are as much swearing at having dropped something on his foot as vast oaks or fearsome foes falling before his wrath. Most of the "firsts" he's responsible for are accidents refined by others but the very fact he has no clue what he's up to is what makes him a wellspring of creation and especially anathema to those creations which limit alternative creativity.

There were a lot of low level monsters before remastered already, but you can always use adjustment to take some critter a few notches down to make it low, like using young dragons as the base for wyrmlings since they have been removed from the book
alternatively, exercise your brainz by adapting some low level from the first edition or other source, or make up your own

Okay I'll rephrase, why are there so few good low level monsters? A generic bandit, a staple "low level" enemy, shouldn't default to level 2.

>just use the weak version!
Sure, but I don't think I should have to.

>>97834520
>make up your own
That's also part of My problem. I'm tired. I've made several different custom stat blocks to fit the monsters I want. I wish there were more generic bad guys (or better options than what's currently available). Maybe My needs are just too particular and specific.
>>
>>97834986
Bandits shouldn't be level 2, they should be level -1.
>>
>>97834986
The problem is a lot of stat blocks are from APs so they won't show up with generic names.

As you pointed out, Bandit is a level 2 creature. But Thorn River Bandits and Black Tear Cutthroats (from the Kingmaker AP) are level -1 and also super generic, as are Abberton Ruffians (from Extinction Curse).

This is why Nethys is a godsend sometimes. Just narrow the search for humanoids levels -1 to 1 and you're golden.

thanks for pointing out where the rules are.

>Don't forget the horse gets to make an attack as well.
he is using the Ride-By attack feat to strike in middle of his movement and ride on past the target. The horse is a standard skeleton heavy warhorse and doesn't have any feats that would allow it to attack in middle of a move action, so I assume with this combo it doesn't get to make any attacks.

Ah, right. I think I was getting it mixed up with the rules where you used to be able to Overrun as part of a Charge as well. No attacks for the horse then, unless you manage to line up a shot where he does a ride-by on one player then ends up next to another one for the horse to attack/Bull Rush.

Those are a bit weak on the scale of Nymph's kiss or even the niche power of Lichloved.
>what's the fey banger feat called?
Nymph's Kiss it's unfortunately Exalted ad needs you to keep the relationship going (And Fey tend to be fickle with even the good ones pulling you into the occasional mean prank that might cost you your Exalted status)

These are usually very powerful feats, Lichloved is fairly niche but strong in that niche, while Nymph's kiss is just mondo strong.
Fey creatures regard you as though you were fey. You gain a +2 circumstance bonus on all Charisma-related checks, and a +1 bonus on all saving throws against spells and spell-like abilities. Starting with the level when you take this feat, you gain 1 extra skill point per level.

Nice as a starter.

I like the idea of a "Gotta fuck em all' playthough where there's a separate track without nonsex prereqs (And players possibly start with one or two) just to get crazy.
>>
>>97833501
>Those are a bit weak
I was intentionally picking weak ones that a DM might be convinced to throw your way as a free feat for role playing in a standard game.

If you want to have a 'Gotta fuck em all' game centered around the theme I would suggest that you don't pigeon hole every creature with an exact line of feats but come up with a generic system.

I have one like that from a lewd themed game I planned out but never got to run.The gist was, some goddess blessed PCs as her champions and granted them an ability to copy aspects of the girls they slept with.
For every creature of a given species one sleeps with, gets a cumulative +1% chance to copy one of their feats / abilities / skills at random. Once copied from a given species, can't copy anything more from them, have to look for others.

The cost of this was that a PC who accepted being a champion of that goddess, couldn't get anything except class abilities by any other means, took massive penalties against any kind of seduction/mind control and monster girls could drain his magic abilities through sex. That last one was to intentionally sabotage spell caster classes, since in this game, martials couldn't make any proper builds.

Gearhead thread but for /tg/

Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.

I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.

I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.

I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.

Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?

These "Statty's noteboards" are pretty handy for traveling GM's. It has 1 inch hexes/squares on the other side which is great for gaming. Can be wiped and the thing fits in a pocket folded.

But in home games I love the Chessex Megamat. It is huge, and lays flat easily. The surface is pleasant to the touch. Hello elegan/tg/gentlemen,

Bit of an odd question, but, I am travelling from USA to Europe and I will visit over there a friend of mine who is into /tg/ stuff and lives over there now. We have a rule of not bringing gifts to eachother, but nonetheless I wanted to bring something, maybe not in excess of 10$. What could I bring him? Preferably something that he cannot get in Europe or is more expensive there. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

TL;DR cheap stuff /tg/ related which is more expensive or had to get in Europe than the USA

Anything that is popular enough is also available in Europe. Assuming you have enough prep time, look around /awg/ for the manufacturers list. There are some indie mini makers that don’t sell across the pond (or the shipping costs are insane). For example, I found this old school manufacturer that I had shipped to my ex-gf uncle’s and I picked it up when we visited last summer.

Nice. Remind me of those surprise hot illustrations that you would find in tabletop RPG magazines

I get it that it can seem like the slop machines are taking over, but they can only do derivative, repetitive stuff with small variations and only after a lot of trial and error. An actual person will always do it better, but it will take a while to get there, and the long road of learning can be disheartening, but it is also fun and fulfilling. You can also combine your skills with the slop. It produces the best results.
